Title: Willenhall / The Three Tuns Pub
Post by: alyson123 on Thursday 28 May 09 22:57 BST (UK)
Hi,
Can anyone remember the Three Tuns Public House in Willenhall? ......  I believe it has now been demolished. My gt grandparents were the publicans here circa 1905, I would love to see a picture  of the pub, does anyone know where I might find one?
Any suggestions gratefully recieved.
Regards
Alyson

Hi Alyson,
I haven't managed to find a photograph for you, but I wondered if you had seen this descriptiion:
WALSALL ROAD Willenhall
Three Tuns PH
Small C18 house extended early-mid C19.Pair of very large double-width bay windows with 2- and 3-light sashes, central door. First floor has 3-light sashes under shallow painted stone lintels. Single-storey (?) brewery extension to one side behind railings. 1985

There are two books on Amazon , one called Woverhampton Pubs and the other called Black Country Pubs which include a lot of old photographs.
Iam not sure if they cover the Willenhall area but its possible?

Here is the Three Tuns Tavern Walsall Road Willenhall. My Grandmother lived there in 1901 name of Mellor, she was 20 at the time. My son named it in our files as The Cross Guns so take no notice of that, as you can see on the Pub sign it is the Three Tuns.

Hello Alyson,

Not sure if you're interested in the history of the Three Tuns Pub but, according to the 1861 Census entry, a distant cousin of mine (one Meshach Rowley) may have been the publican. At the time, it was recorded as an Inn and Provision Shop and my cousin was also a General Rimlock Maker. A busy man by the sound of it.

Regards

Andrew

Hi 3Tuns,

I live just the opposite side of Willenhall town to the pub (over by the Memorial Park) and would - if at all possible - love to hear more on the associated haunting?  I've heard of many different tales concerning the general area, but nothing on this particular property, so I'm greatly intrigued to say the least!! ;) ;)

Very intriguing photograph 3Tuns!!

Whatever it is, it appears to have some cloth-like features to it?  Had this been a transparent, human figure, I would have strongly suggested that it may well have been a by-product of digital camera tech - I've seen lots of photographs along those sorts of lines - but, if it was possibly a mis-interpreted object............ what on earth was it???? :o

We've been asked to view photographs by many sources in the past - incl. on behalf of Radio, TV and other media concerns - but this one is one of the more interesting anomalies I've seen, I must admit......

Regards,

Nick

My husband's 2nd great grandfather, Thomas Williams, was also at the Three Tuns, listed in the 1860 city directory as "Three Tuns" but also as a brass padlock and trunk lock maker on King Street, which matches his 1861 census address. In 1871 he is at the Royal George as a "licensed victualler" and is also listed at the Royal George in the 1872 city directory. Just by way of trivia, he became widowed in the fall of 1871, remarried in early 1872 to a woman nearly 30 years his junior, had his very first child, and then died in 1873.

There seem to be many pubs of this name but just one in Willenhall. Do you know its history? Did it exist prior to 1860 or was our 2nd great grandfather the originator?  I don't know why he left the Three Tuns and went to the Royal George--I know it existed before then.  Still, I wonder if our 2nd GG is a candidate for your ghost!

There was discussion of photos but I don't see any links. I do see photos elsewhere online, however. It doesn't look original to 1860, and it isn't clear if it is in the same place--it was on King St, but they may have renamed the street in the last 150 years.

I am very interested in the history of its founding. Please share what you know.  Thanks!

Know this is a bit late - only recently joined Rootschat.

In 2011 Irene M Bowen & ,Robert W Williams produced a small but useful booklet for Willenhall Hist Society. ISBN 0-9549626-6-4 entitled "Willenhall Pubs Past & Present"
No photo but quote :- THREE TUNS (Hulley's 2879/80)  24 King Street, Willenhall on the E side before the junction with Cannon Street. Taken from the arms of the ancient company of Vintners (1437) , a tun being a large cask containing wine etc.
Every little helps?

Hi
In regards to Mary the ghost, the landlady of the pub when I was growing up was a lovely lady named Mary Everitt. I went to the pub often with my dad and sat in her back room playing with her Corgi dogs (Sam and Max i seem to remember were their names) or playing pool in the family room. She was probably there until the early 90s i would say, until she retired. She must have been in her 70s by then.
