Hi,
I am doing a one name study of the Rossiter family and am looking for information please about the parents, grandparents, siblings and children of John Paul Rossiter born circa 1839 in Bristol.
I found him in the 1881 Census with his wife Mary Here:-
http://www.familysearch.org/ENG/search/census/household_record.asp?HOUSEHOLD_CODE=1881BR_5464667&HOUSEHOLD_SUB=1&frompage=5
Any information would be greatly appreciated please. TIA.
Best wishes

Hi Woody,
Thanks for that.
TBH, at this stage of my enquiries ( I've just started!!) I am not ruling anything in or out because I simply do not know what is relevant. The birth record is certainly possible as I believe Clifton
I am basically gathering the pieces and trying to put them together in a picture that makes sense.
I tried to find a marriage for John and Mary but could not come up with anything.
Sorry I cannot be of more help.
Best wishes

Hi Dolly/ Mum44
Thank you for the posts.
Had the family posted by Dolly partially in my database i.e. parents plus first two children.
Given the ages of the children I am assuming the 1851 Census ages of parents i.e. born circa 1811.
Mum44, is Eliza a family member please? Jane looks like John's mother.
Best wishes

Dunno, RC - no relationships on the 1841 :-\ All I can say is - she was there in the household ;)
ADDED :
25 in 1841 and 40 in 1851 works - ages rounded down in 1841 (mostly !) so could have been 30 ;)

Hi Mum44,
Thanks for that.
Just found this on another website.
http://awtc.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=adesheppard&id=I650&ti=5538
The age for John is off but the information on the wife & children seems to match.
What do you think?
Best wishes

Well - the age for John is off, and so is the place of birth :( Bitton is a long way from North Petherton :(
Strange they have the same place of birth for mother - maybe they too got it off the 1851 and couldn't read it ::) Certainly wife and children look OK, but I would be very leery about dad ::) :-\
Now - this is pure speculation - I have been searching for a possible place of birth, and the nearest I can come up with is Aust - which is near Bristol, in fact these days it is the site of the Severn Bridge Service Area on the M4.

Hi Mum44,
Thanks for that.
The 1841 Census would seem to confirm what you say given that John the son was the only one born in county i.e. Gloucestershire as were later children.
The question is whether or not there is someone in the 1841 Census in North Petherton who could be the father of John the father?
Also is there a marriage record to tell us Mary's maiden name and when & where they were married?
Best wishes

I can't see a Rossiter in North Petherton in 1841 - but, if Jane is his mother, and she is in Bristol with them - I would expect her to be a widow ;)
They are likely to have married before civil registration, judging from William's age, and I can't see anything on the IGI :-\
Birth certificate of one of the younger children will give you Mary's maiden name, which might be a great help ;)

Hi
Hope not to confuse things but in 1881 It has Mary as Mary Smith Rossiter, Lyndey, Glouc .
In 1891 RG12 4337 page 6 at same address as 1881 John Grant Rossiter (mispelt Brant Rogsiter) 39 Bristol, Mary S Rossiter, Lyndey 42.
There is a Marriage on bmd June 1872 John Grant Rossiter Mary Smith Sainsbury Chepstow 11a 13.
Hope this is of some help
