Could someone help me with some baptisms in Minster around 1775
I have an Elizabeth Matthews daughter of John & Elizabeth who was born around 1776
Can someone help me as to whether this is the only Matthews in Minster around this date or did she have any siblings as well?
Thanks
Gerry

Hi Gerry,
I see an Elizabeth Matthews who was christened at Faversham on 18 May 1776 to parents John and Elizabeth Matthews. There is no burial or marriage for this Elizabeth at Faversham. However, see marriage licences, below.
A brother, John, was also christened at Faversham on 13 Nov 1774 and seems to have married there during 1806.
And the following marriages from the Canterbury Archdeaconry marriage licences:
WARD, James and MATTHEWS, Elizabeth, licence dated 29 Sep 1813 - he of Minster Sheppey gent bachelor & she of the same spinster. No specification as to place of marriage was made.
MATTHEWS, John and SALT, Elizabeth licence dated 28 Dec 1760 - he of HMS Granada boatswain's mate bachelor (33) & she of Minster Sheppey spinster (22), marriage to take place at Minster, Sheppey.
But I would caution that there is another John and Elizabeth Matthews couple at Sandwich of the same time frame and may be the couple that married by licence and both of St. Lawrence in Thanet: MATTHEWS, John and DEAR, Elizabeth, licence dated 16 Jan 1770.
I hope this is of some value to your research.
Sincerely,
Susan

Hello Susan
You have been a great help
I believe Elizabeth Matthew's parents were a John Matthews & a Sarah Jordain who married in Minster In Sheppey on 20th July 1765
It would appear that they then had three children in Minster namely
John 1765, Sarah Ann 1766 & William 1769
I then get a gap until three born in Queenborough namely
James (my ancestor) 1783, Sally Copper 1786 & John 1788
I know Elizabeth was a sibling - she married a Seering Hall in Queenborough in 1796 & died after childbirth to twins on the 7th November 1808
The Faversham birth is exactly consistent with Elizabeth's age when she died
I suspect the brother John born in 1765 died as a child but I have no trace of his death
I will have a detailed look at the original Faversham parish records on my next visit to the Canterbury Archives - was your info from them or the Bishop's transcripts?
Thanks
Gerry
p.s
I had a similar paperweight called Sooty who departed this life in 1991 aged 16 - much missed

Hi Gerry,
I just checked my resources, again, and I don't know if I've been a help or not! Here is the marriage licence of John Mathews and Sarah Jordain from the Canterbury Marriage Licences:
MATHEWs, John and JORDAIN, Sarah, dated 10 Jul 1765 - he of Minster Sheppey bachelor (32) & she of the same, widow, at Minster
Whereas the marriage licence of John and Elizabeth state that he was a bachelor! Allowing for miscues on age the John of 1770 could have been the John of 1765 but the bachelor status would be a hard one to fudge, especially if he had several children in tow.
I have all three types of registers for Faversham in an effort to sort out my own messy bunch from there. The note I have for the Matthews christenings says I took it from the Bishop's. But in my experience with the original parish register there are not many discrepanies between the two and very seldom any additional data on entries. But, I can check it for you on Thursday for the christening of Elizabeth, if you like.
Sincerely,
Susan
PS I bet Sooty is much missed! They become such a part of us.

Hi Susan
Would you know if Alice Bunce was born in Minster Sheppey in about 1720-30?
Regards
Wendy

Hi Wendy,
Off hand, no, I don't have the Minster Sheppey register available to me until Thursday.
In the meantime, I would suggest that you go to the "Kent Lookup Requests" board and post a new topic [see the button immediately above the board listings that says "New Topic", click on that] with a subject line of BUNCE, Minster Sheppey, 1720-1730 and request your lookup there.
I'll check that board before I go to the library on Thursday to see if you've received an answer. If not, I'll take a look in the register for you.
You might also, if not already done, take a wander through Colin Penney's web site of Sheppey information
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~penney/index.htm.
It is not to be taken as being complete data as many of the registers have not been transcribed.
Sorry I couldn't be of more help to you, immediately.
Sincerely,
Susan
