I wonder if anyone may be able to help with an information on a ship that an uncle was killed on in 1942. It is S.S., or in other places, HMS Glentilt which was under the control of H.M.S. President III.
I understand that this was a steamship but would it be a Royal Naval or Mechant Navy ship & can anyone help me with it's history &/or where I might find a photograph.
Thank you

For the ship's whereabouts you could download the Merchant Shipping Movement Crad here:
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/details-result.asp?Edoc_Id=8172232&queryType=1&resultcount=21
It's Merchant Navy - "HMS" signifies Royal Navy, S.S. signifies MN

Thank you so much that is very helpful.

Hi Tetbury...
You don't name your uncle but there is a reference here to a death on Glen Tilt in 1942..it wouldn't be him would it?

Hi Milly,
Yes thank you he was Leslie Cooper listed as dying on 12th December 1942.

There's a bit of background info on HMS President III here too..
http://www.dedworth.org.uk/history/hms_president_iii.htm
and a reference to what looks like it could be your Glen Tilt's history here (looks to be the same one as it was sunk off Lowestoft 12/12/1942) No picture yet but a few more clues.
http://www.mariners-l.co.uk/WWIStandardShipsWarT.htm
and
http://www.teesbuiltships.co.uk/harkess/goodwillofbristol1920.htm which says "12/12/1942 torpedoed by E-boat when 3 miles off No.4 Buoy, Lowestoft on passage London for Middlesbrough with cement."

One last one before I go to bed..
There is a description of the torpedo action on coastal convoy FN-889 here although it relates to death of Able Seaman Blackman on another boat...It does mention that the Glen Tilt was also there on 12 december 1942 when the E-boats attacked by Torpedo.
Go to.. http://www.rootschat.com/links/06ee/
and search on Glen Tilt
and more in depth here....
http://www.warsailors.com/singleships/marianne.html
If you search on "FN 889" you will find a few more references to the convoy which sunk in what was known as "E-Boat Alley"

Hello Hugh,
Thank you so much for your reply, I was thinking of going to The National Archives tomorrow morning to look at some of Milly's suggestions so I will order the ship articles of agreement as you suggest I did not know there was such a document.
You have been very helpful, thank you again.

Have fun at Kew. Don't forget your digital camera to take pictures of any interesting documents you find. ;D ;D ;D

Hi there, this is a tall order due to the date this was first posted, I was looking for any information on someone I believe to be my 2nd cousin a Leslie Cooper who died on a ship aboard the Glen Tilt I happened to stumble across this post I was wandering if anyone had anyway of containing the original poster as they too are related.
Thanks
