Jenn
Now is this a challenge Jenn ;D
I gather this is their marriage - with spelling variations on Margaret's surname.
5133/1888
HENNESSY Thomas
RENEHAN Margaret
At Cootamundra
5133/1888
HENNESSY Thomas
RENCHAN Margaret
At Cootamundra
Would you like us to search for his death? Do you have any hunches or gut feelings about where he died? There are a couple of Thomas deaths in NSW but not in Cootamundra. Do you have parents' names...and that was probaby a silly question or you would have found the deaths yourself ;)
;D ;D ;D ;D Oh I am sitting here listening to the dollars raining down on our roof....wonderful rain in this dry part of Victoria...and on our recently sown wheat and barley crops. ;D ;D ;D ;D
Cheers
Cando
-
Well now I am glad I made Dee giggle never thought about Coota and Hairs, as you know Coota is short for Cootamundra :D :D
And Cassie wonderfull to hear that you have rain after all your hard work over the last couple of weeks, a lot of Australian never appreciate or realize just what goes on out on the farms and properties across rural Australia.
Thanks Jude I do have the 1930/1936 rolls.
I know his parents names were Denis and Jane but cannot locate a matching death but in saying that I know that there were incorrect names on Ellen Hairs death and I got the names from the marriage certificate of Ellen Hennessy and Michael Hennessy.
I am working through this and feel I have to buy the marriage certificate of Thomas Hennessy and Margaret Renehan. He and his brother Michael arrived first in 1880 and then the two sisters in 1883.
I have a photo of my Nan and Auntie Maggie Hennessy that my only living Aunt knew lived at Coota same as her Nana and Dadda did. I also knew there was no sister Maggie, and Michael had married an Isabell Hess( which I got the certificate for) So using that information found the marriage of Thomas and Margaret. The fact they called their first son Denis sways me also as that was their fathers names. Following so far ;)
So the best thing is for me to get the marriage certificate and see if my gut feeling is right. I spoke to My Aunt in Sydney a short time ago and though she remembers Maggie Hennessy as my aunt was born in 1936 and Maggie died by my reckoning with NSW BDMS in 1944 which she says was about when Aunt Maggie died not long before wars end.
She was stern looking woman thats for sure. Just for interest
Here is her picture taken with my Nana Bayley nee Hair
Thanks for taken at interest
kind thoughts to all

Oh those wonderful old street photos - so good to see.
As always - happy to look up any newspaper if you can give me a date.
Pleased to hear you have rain Cando - we need more here. So frustrating when our tv news comes from Sydney and they whinge about the rain!
Hope Dee has recovered ::)
Cheers, Judith
-
How wonderful to have a photo ;D Just look at those hats ;D Jenn I don't suppose there is a date on the photo.
Jenn I notice on Dennis HENNESSY's WW1 service record that his father is named as Thomas Patrick HENNESSY.
Death
21355/1940
HENNESSY Thomas Patrick
78 years Sydney
District Sydney
Burial record
HENNESSY Thomas P 78 years 10 Dec 1940 Sec*M2*16**1172
Burial Rookwood.
There a burial record for another Thomas P HENNESSY at Rookwood in 1926 and both Thomas P's would have been b. c1862. The death reg only lists him as Thomas - no 'P'.
6690/1926
HENNESSY Thomas
Father Timothy Mother Mary
District Granville
HENNESSY Thomas P 64 years 28 Dec 1926 Sec*M1*AA**1030
Burial Rookwood
Here's hoping that one of the above is your Thomas ;D
Judith it is still showering albeit lightly. We also need a lot more however the countryside is taking on a green hue ;D
Cheers

Thanks Cando, I saw the 1940 death but there is an electoral roll record for a Thomas Patrick Hennessy in Sydney in 1930/1936 living at the same address as a Sarah Jane Hennessy.
Now this seems to be this couples marriage
838/1916 HENNESSY THOMAS P FRENCH SARA J SYDNEY
So that could rule him out.
But if Jude gets a chance to check out the newspapers for his death or funeral 10 dec 1940 that should help either way.
I cannot see a divorce record for Thomas and Margaret on SRO.
Jenn
-
Jenn do you know who Thomas Patrick and Margaret's son, also Thomas Patrick, married? Could it be him on the electoral roll.
Death
26458/1954
HENNESSY Thomas Patrick

No unfortuantely facts are light on I am just working from the NSW BDM site as well, so that is a possibility.
Good thinking

Jen is there a date on the photo?
Death of wife of Thomas P.

Oh sorry Cando, no there is no date more's the pity.
Jenn
-
Ah the old gut feeling ;D
I contacted the Catholic Church in Coota this morning and explained what I was after to a very nice lady. I told her I had the year of the marriage but not the date so the dear trolled through and found the marriage
Thomas Hennessy parents Denis Hennesy and Jane Ryan married Margaret Renehan parents Michael Renehan and Bridget Maguire 21/6/1888 at Cootamundra by Father R Butler at St Columbus Church.
Now that confirms that is my "Thomas"but no closer to his death.
I also rang the Coota Council and got Margaret Anastasia Hennessy death date 5/3/1944. But the system is not set to tell you who else is buried there but the nice lady at the Church told me from a quick look at deaths when she was looking for Margarert's death (which she didn't have that) Micheal Leonard Hennessy death was there and he appears to be buried in the same grave as his mum.(from what the council gave me)
The hunt continues for Thomas death which could be between 1914/15 and the 1930 roll. But then he could have shot through too :o
Perhaps I should post a request to see if someone has information on Cootamundra Monumental Inscriptions
kind thoughts Jenn

I checked back to Dec 7 but no death notice for this chap only a funeral notice which tells nothing ....
SMH December 10, 1940
Funeral of Thomas Patrick Hennessy from Labor Motor Funerals 24 Enmore Rd, Newtown at 9.45am for the Catholic Cemetery, Rookwood.
Nothing in the Telegraph either >:(
No notices at all for the 1926 chap.
Sorry - no help at all. ???

Thanks dear Jude for looking anyway
much appreciated

Hi all
The Nat Lib has films of the Coota local paper I noticed yesterday, from the 1880s on, I think. Shall I have a look for Margaret Hennessy 1944? And are there any other dates I could try for anyone else? I haven't used the Coota paper before so have no idea of the content but most of those old papers have good information.
Will be at the lib probably on Friday.

I notice also that the Canberra geneology Society has monumental transcritiptions for Coota. Can't get there before next week - send me a PM over the weekend of who you would like looked up.

Oh now Jude isn't that a mine of information.
Confirms that Ruby did marry a Ryan which a good soul had sent me information from the fedration BDMS
And tells us when Thomas died will have to look at the BDMs
you are a 5star gal Jude
thanks JEnn
-
The online BDM's thrown up this one
21355/1940 HENNESSY THOMAS PATRICK died aged 78 YRS SYDNEY
So this is the death that Jude found in reply no 11 .
Jenn
-
Jude, are you able to check the Coota papers for perhaps a death or funeral for Thomas Patrick Hennessy 10/12/1940 to see if it might be the right Thomas?
Jenn
-
Yes ma'm :D and here it is:
Cootamudra Herald, Wednesday December 11, 1940
The death occurred in Sydney of Mr Thomas Hennessy, sen, formerly of Cootamundra. He leaves a widow, five sons - Tom (Sydney), Frank, Vince, Len (Cootamundra), Leo (AIF abroad) and one married daughter (Ruby) who lives near Albury. One son Denny dies at Cootamundra from injuries sustained in the Great War.
No mention of Margaret's name and her obit didn't mention her having lived in Sydney at all.
Will scan this but I have transcribed it exactly.
Judith
-
Thanks very much for that Judith
That solves what happened to Thomas Patrick senior.
Could we assume that they lived separate lives, being Irish Catholic maybe a divorce wasn't going to happen.
The son Denis served in WW1 by his war record (as Dennis Hennessy) he was invalided out from Gallipoli with Influzena that caused him heart problems.
once again my heartfelt thanks

Greetings Jenn,
I had to ferret at the NLA and decided to look at electoral rolls.
I found Margaret, Frank Sylvester,Michael Leonard, Vincent Joseph, Leo, Patrick Benedick in Temora St in 1937. The same in 1938 except Leo not there and in 1939 the same as 1937.
I didn't find any of them in 1940.
So I didn't go any further, thinking they had moved, however looking at this posting I see Margaret was still in Coota. I can look further another day if you like.
If any other names or years, just let me know. The NLA has all electoral rolls.. BUT!!!!!! today i found some years missing from the drawer!!!! mutter...
Cheerssss
Eds
-
Thanks Eds
for taking the time and effort to do that for me,
I would really like a house number in Temora Street but apprently house numbers were not introduced for many years
Jenn
-
Youre most welcome
I did see in the white pages 21 Temora St. I looked there to
see if any remained. There is a L. Hennessy there.
Cheers
Eds
-
Ah yes but no relation I did ring him though
thanks Jenn
-
sigh..........................
Would you like me to try and find past 1940? As Margaret
died in Coota she HAS to be there.
Eds
-
Thanks Eds
However I just received an email from the lovely lady at Coota who informs me the family lived at 130 Temora Road. So that solves that bit of the puzzle as well but thanks for your kind offer
Jenn
-
Good result Jenn - two obits and burial places for Thomas P and Margaret.
I have checked and there is no headstone for Thomas P at Rookwood. I should have checked previously as the Thomas P who died in 1926 is buried with parents.
Cheers
Cando
-
Yes Cando, a very good result
Had a very kind RCER pm me with details of Margaret A Hennessy's will. She left it all to one son, mmmn wonder if that caused a few arguements.
Also another pm with births to 1918
A couple were changed in the 1930 to reflect the fathers details as they were just in the mothers name in several cases. We do often see that though. ;)
Margaret and Thomas P had the following children
23122/1888 HENNESSY DENIS at COOTAMUNDRA died 1923
Denis 8/9/1923 35 yrs
11357/1890 HENNESSY THOMAS Patrick at COROWA died 1954
11778/1892 HENNESSY FRANCIS Sylvester at COROWA died 1976
2805/1895 HENNESSY RUBY Agnes at COOTAMUNDRA
Married Michael Joseph RYAN Ruby died at Albury 16/9/1969
Michael died 23/11/1961
1658/1897 HENNESSY ROSE A at COOTAMUNDRA died 1897
20626/1898 HENNESSY VINCENT Joseph at COOTAMUNDRA died 27/9/1959 61 yrs
12106/1901 HENNESSY MICHAEL Leonard at COOTAMUNDRA 23/11/1946 45 yrs
2752/1906 HENNESSY PATRICK Benedict at COOTAMUNDRA died 1971
34919/1908 HENNESSY MARY E at COOTAMUNDRA died 1908
14095/1910 HENNESSY LEO Clement at COOTAMUNDRA died 1976
Gunner Leo C (Ike) 18/9/1976***
Still looking for children ;D but doesn't seem to likey as a couple didn't marry and others later in life.
Jenn
-
Many thanks to Judb for obtaining obituaries for many of these Hennessy folk
looks like Vincent Joseph was the only son to have had children. (so far ;D) Leo Denis Hennessy and Ruby Fay Hennessy both now deceased.
Ruby Agnes Ryan nee Hennessy appears to have had a couple or more children though, still on the hunt for them,
A number of the sons just dropped dead!!!!
Francis Sylvester Hennessy was the only child to be mentioned in her will !!

Hi Jenn,
I really hope you see this! I know this message was started in 09 but I've just seen it now while trying to do a family search.
My Grandfather is Leo Denis Hennessy (He passed away, 7 jan 1983, before I was born but * is still alive today.) And that's about all I know when it comes to my family history sadly.
Can I as what your relation to the family is? Or why you were searching them? :)
Also whether you could pass the info, photos, etc, you found onto me, it would mean a lot!
Cheers, R.

Thank you so much Jenn, your search has been really helpful!
That's very cool. My father (Leo's first son) does not talk about his parents and beyond it's a bit weird to know I have distant cousins around Aust.
I don't think Hennessy men have the best reputation ha.
(If you have any other relevant photo's that you wouldn't mind putting on here would be great :) )

Do the family still live in the Cootamundra/Temora area?
that is the only Hennessy family photo I have
I can tell you that in 1980 Leo Dennis lived at 77 Temora Street and his sister and husband lived at 81 Temora Street
do you have any Hennessy photos?
Jenn
-
Some of them do yes, but others are scattered.
I know * Hennessy still lives there with her imediate family.
I have one photo album that has a few photo's of Leo and Frances and the children but that's all.
I cannot find any records of Frances Dorothy Pinto, I know she is ment to be a Portugese orphan from Finely, I'd love to find out her backgroud at some point.
Thankyou again!
Ruby

I also noted with interest this marriage record is only 2 apart from Leo and Frances
So I wondered a double wedding perhaps

Hi,
I couldn't help but notice the Thomas Patrick Hennessy conversation. My Mum was adopted (sort of) by Thomas Patrick Hennessy and his wife Sarah Jane French after her mother died when she was born. Mum's father (Harry Norman French) was Sarah Jane's brother. I called him Poppa Hennessy and he was the only grandfather I knew of for a very long time. Unfortunately, he died when I was only four and is buried at Botany Cemetery in Sydney. Uncle Frank (Francis Sylvester) was still living in Temora Road well after I was married and I visited him there quite a few times. I knew him much better than the other surviving brothers and he was a lovely man. From memory, he died in about 1976.
-
Hi there Faeriewings ;D
glad that the post offered some information of the Hennessy family background sounds as if Thomas junior was a lovely man
if you need any help please ask
kind thoughts Jenn

Hello again,, just adding this as there were a couple of other family members in this thread who might be interested in this from TROVE. He was estranged from his family for many years I am thinking because of the drink.
TROVE certainty is a vertibile treasure TROVE
