I have found out recently that my gr grandfather was from Berlin Germany, his name was Rudolph Bishcoff/Bishop. The last trace of him was on the 1911 census. I have been told that he was interned by some of the family the others say he went back to Germany before ww1 started. I have looked at all the passenger list with no trace and have tried the Kew Archives with no luck either, on his marriage certificate it say's he worked in a suger refinery in Liverpool, I don't know when he came to England, but he married my gr grandmother in 1898 and had seven children. I am now trying to find out if he went back to Germany and if he did, where in Germany did he live. I have only just become a member and the information on this site helps a lot. :)

Hi and welcome to Rootschat
The sugar refinery was probably Tate & Lyle. have a look at this link

Thank you. I know that on the 1911 census he had left the suger refinery and went to work as a shipping clerk, I will have a read of your link and hopefully it might lead me to other things
-
this website shows the history of the sugar refiners and also has a list of Germans living in the UK in 1881

I see from the 1911 census that he was born 1867 and is shown as Rudolph Bishop
I cannot see an 1898 marriage for him under Bishop or Bishcoff nor can I find him on the 1901 to check his birthplace/occupation
-
I do have the marriage certificate and i do know he was staying in a boarding house in Pluto street, Liverpool this is where he met my gr grandmother as it was her mother who run the boarding house. I read on one of the roots chat that if i get in touch with the Red cross in Genever they might have him on record and this might tell me where in Berlin he was born. I have tried the 1901 census and i could not find any trace of them either.

Have you looked for BISCHOF which is German for bishop? I do not believe that BISHCOFF exists.

-
I have found Rudolf on the Scottish 1901 census. I just need to find out where he went when ww1 broke out. :)

I have seen the grave of a Rudolf Bischoff, died 30/9/1914, in the war graves section of Weston Mill cemetery, Plymouth. It stands out because it appears to be a German war grave.

A bit more about this grave:

"POWs who passed away in the vicinity of Plymouth"
From: http://gallica.bnf.fr/
BEF prisoners 1914.
"Res IR Nr 56 recruited out of Wesel, Westphalia and had following subordination:
13. Res Inf Div
25. Res Inf Bde
Reserve Infantry Regiment Number 56
* this regiment was part of the initial German offensive into Belgium on 2 Aug 1914 and participated in the
taking of Maubeuge."
(captured, I don't know how or when) brought to Plymouth, England as a pow and died in September 1914, (maybe was badly wounded and hospitalised??)

There is also this one in Red Cross Records, on this page:
http://grandeguerre.icrc.org/en/List/673513/2088/1202/
German Prisoners of War interned outside Europe and Egypt:
Serial number 21246 c , Name Rudolf Bischoff, Age 38, Regiment/House Address or Birthplace Wein (B), Place of internment QU.M. 28.10.14. No Remarks.
QU.M. was in Montreal, Quebec, Cananda and this man was born in Wein (maybe Vienna). Not the same man buried in Plymouth?
You said your Rudolf was born in Berlin.
-
Can't seem to find Rudolf Bischoff buried in Plymouth as a British POW but this is the link to the home page of Redcross Records.

Hi
I think the man you found in the Red Cross Records can not be the right one,
because he was far to young and I' don't think that the right one was a soldier.
But perhaps one of the two Rudolph Bischoff in the Red Cross Records of
Civilian internees is the right one (one age 38 is to young, the other age 49).
Bischoff Rudolph, age 49, 44 Lathan Street, Liverpool, birthplace Berlin
place of internment: Stbs. (This could be Stobs Camp in Hawick, Scotland)
You have to scroll down to the page with the number 7.
http://grandeguerre.icrc.org/en/List/2982638/2091/36/
Stobs Camp in Hawick, Scotland opened in Nov 1914 to take civilians. When these were sent to the Isle of Man, combatants were detained there. Became the main administrative centre in Scotland when PoW labour was made available

If he went back to Berlin maybe you can find him in the directories of Berlin.
