Title: Royal Irish Constabulary ancestor
Post by: gustav on Wednesday 26 March 08 21:58 GMT (UK)
I was told that my Gt Grandfather was in the RIC around 1870. Is there any way I can confirm this. His name was Daniel Gilbride from Donegal.

Many thanks for any info

Regards

Gustav

Hello Gustav,

Your Gt Grandfather should be listed in Jim Herlihy's book "A Complete Alphabetical List
of Officers and Men ...  1816-1922" published by Four Courts Press, Dublin in 1999.

My Great-Great-Grand Uncle George Lynch was in the RIC in Dublin but was from Buncrana.
He would have joined later than the 1880's.

Where could I find info?

Thanks

Hello oisinh,

Jim Herlihy's book should contain George's service number. Have a look at the National Archives Domestic Records Information 54 " Royal Irish Constabulary Records" for more information. The records are kept at the Garda Síochána Museum in Dublin Castle. www.esatclear.ie/~garda/museum.html
