The AVG security has expired on my lap top and I now get a pop-up message to install new AVG Free 8.5.
I am on a dial-up internet access which gives 2 hours maximum; this is not long enough for the AVG to download.
Advice please in plain language ......I still have computer "L" plates up!

Hi,
Assuming you are using MS windows...
AVG have a download manager that will allow you to resume an interrupted download. Details of how it works are here: http://www.avg.com/faq.num-1612
Download manager here: http://www.avg.com/filedir/inst/avg_free_stb_en_8_22.exe
Alternatively, you could ask someone with a broadband connection to download AVG for you and put it onto a CD so you can install from there.
Regards, Paul.
-
Thanks Paul. Fingers crossed that it will solve the problem for me. :)

It can often be found on the DVD cover discs on computer magazines which might be an alternative way of getting it
Robert

Thanks Robert; had not thought of that route. At the moment everytime I try to download the manager suggested the computer turns itself off. ???

I was on Dial up until February,I downloaded A.V.G the way Paul recommended.I don't remember having to download a download manager though. It took over two sitting at the computer over 2 days. Its good really because you can start your download then minimize it so it works in the back ground. While you get on with something else, when you come off your computer. You just stop the download FIRST or it might get corrupted. Then restart it next time you go on the net.

I tried that, but because the friend had norton he couldn't install it.I have A.V.G so i cant install in again,What i could do and i know it works.I still have the download file,so I can put that on a disk if i wanted. It is really best to download strait from the website though. Then as soon as you have downloaded it.You don't get the. "You A.V.G is out of Date" ;D I also tried looking on magazines for a disk but they haven't done that for a long time

Hi Celia,
Thanks for your thoughts on this; unfortunately nothing seems to be working at the moment. The AVG download is still only about 50% when the 2 hour dial-up expires.
Will have another attempt today.

Nanny Jan,
Sorry you're still having problems. I've not heard of the AVG download manager causing a computer to switch off, very strange.
The actual AVG install file is around 62Mb in size, if you are using a 56k dial-up connection, then at maximum throughput it would take around 3.2 hours to download. So you would certainly need some method of resuming the download from your 2 hour cut off point.
The idea of AVG from a magazine cover disk is quite good if you are able to find one.
If you have no success, if you wish to, send me a private message with your postal address. I'll download the current version and send it to you on CD.
Regards, Paul.

I suugest you get a free program called Filezilla which can resume downloads:

Paul,
Thanks for the offer; I might be taking you up on it! I have a few other things to try first.

Maybe your computer is like mine was it was slow,it should continue downloading where it left off. When i downloaded mine at first it said it would take 7 hours :o I remember now it did go into a third day, and i wasn't constricted to 2 hours so if yours has only downloaded 50% in 4 hours it should be finished by tomorrow Monday ;)
Celia P.S if it has downloaded by 50% it shows it is working in the background it is just slow ;D
-
P.P.S ;D
Whatever you decide to do,once it has downloaded and you have downloaded it to your computer.Have you cleaned your registry lately, that is a main cause of slow computers i do mind every 2 weeks. When i was on dial-up it was like being on broadband once i did that.

Hi,
Downside.....I took one look at the Filezilla link and fled....... ???
Celia.......Cleaned a registry? Never heard of that; it's bad enough cleaning the house!
As I'm home all day today I'm having yet another attempt to download the "manager"..............
Will report back.

Nanny Jan, There is a program called Auslogic, which will clean your registry and most other things for you. The download is relatively small, and the free trial version is complete but limited to 14 days unlike most of them. It has certainly speed my system up quite a lot.

Update:
Started the "manager", got to 60% (after a pause and resume) and then the computer just shut down..........
Time for a reviving cuppa for me and a long think about what to do next.

I'm wondering if the switching off is a problem with the power saving feature (of windows) rather than a download issue.
It's a long time since I've played with windows - the following is from memory and may not be exactly correct... I'm sure a windows user will correct me.
To temporarily turn of power saving:
Start - Settings - Control Panel - Power Options (or Saving?)
Make a note of the current settings - change the following to 'Never'. Obviously if this is how they are set at the moment then this is probably not the cause.
Turn off hard disks
System standby
System hibernate
OK to save the settings.
Then try the download again. If it makes no difference and you did change any settings don't forget to put them back as they were.
Regards, Paul.

I have an idea that Nanny Jan lives in a no broadband area :(
Where I live near Monmouth, some people have managed to get it (I did !) but others just a few doors away in the village can't .... BT say its because they need to rewire the area ... in about ten years time ! :( It all depends which side of the village people live ...
... and I'm also told (and have no reason to suspect its not the case) that the further you are from the BT exchange, the less likely you are to get it.
Going back to AVG ... I had it working for a couple of years; then suddenly got a message to say it had expired, and to do a free download ... which is only for 14 days. I did ... and sure enough, after 14 days, I was told to do it again ... (or pay !)
... so is there a free one somewhere that doesn't need down-loading so frequently ?
-
Hi all,
Broadband is planned for August/September.......fingers crossed! Had a chat with no.3 son who works with computers.......off for another attempt! Son also said that I probably don't need AVG...... ::)

Did I say I switched my netbook to Avast, very satisfactory so far, and of course free.
-
I'm going greyer by the minute.......
Re-started the manager download, kept working on the computer (checking emails etc.) and in the middle on posting on reply on Rootschat.....computer shut down again. ::)
Off to sulk in a corner...........or have yet another reviving cuppa!

Well beyond me, one for the Techies! But if No.3 son works with computers why not ask him for help?I ask mine (only one) he doesn't work with them, but he's of the age that was brought up with them unlike me.
-
Hi,
I followed son no. 3's advice (to keep working on computer while the downloading was going on) but no success. He lives 100 miles away so it looks like another phone call tomorrow..............

Hi Nanny Jan,
I've downloaded it to my PC, split it into three parts and uploaded it as the following three files.
Added: Links now no longer valid. If anyone else would like them reinstated let me know.
http://www.ancestryhost.org/caswells/ForYou/avg_free_stf_en_85_339a1525.sfx.part1.exe
http://www.ancestryhost.org/caswells/ForYou/avg_free_stf_en_85_339a1525.sfx.part2.rar
http://www.ancestryhost.org/caswells/ForYou/avg_free_stf_en_85_339a1525.sfx.part3.rar
You need to download all three of them into one folder and run the 'part1' exe. It will pull the three back together into one and you should have your AVG Free installer called avg_free_stf_en_85_339a1525.exe ready to run.
If you start downloading within about a half hour of me posting this start with part3. Its up there now. Parts 1 and 2 should be up soon. Added: All there now - pick any order.
If you need it split into smaller bits let me know.
NB: Please be sure to download them. If you are offered an 'Open With' dialog, be sure to choose the 'Download to my computer' option.
Good luck, and please let me know when it's all done and dusted. I need to delete them.
Paul
-
Thanks Paul that's very kind of you but my son is emailing me a set of instructions in an attempt to sort out my computer.
For the sake of your own system please delete the files you so kindly organised for me.
Off to see what is in the emails...........
Nanny Jan

Hi Nanny Jan,
No problem. I'll leave them there for a week or two, just in case you need them. I hope you sort something out. Good luck.

Problem now resolved, thanks to Paul. What a star! :-*
