Wouldn't it be great to have a basic check list of sites / things to search. I don't mean obscure sites, just the obvious.
Perhaps, if folk agree, ideas could be added to this thread and someone (me?) can put it on a document in a logical manner.
I'm posting this only on the Scotland board for now because the sites / techniques are different from those elsewhere in the UK or overseas.
Dave
I'll start....
Some ideas which I'm sure people can add to......

Looks a good idea Dave

Local archives could be added as well - they have original documents which haven't been published like burial registers, some church records and other valuable sources. Most local authorities will have information on their websites about their archives service. University archives are a good source too.
Local registrars may also have family history sources, or will provide access.
-
I agree with aspin - great idea Dave!
How many times have we all forgotten to add things to 'favourites' then can't remember where 'such and such' information was to be found?
Plus, if info isn't to be found on one site - there's always a chance it could be found on another so to have a 'checklist' handy as a reminder would help no end.

University archives is a good one. Local registry offices is an example of an obvious source I'd omitted. I've amended the original post to include them.

As I am around 3/32 Scottish this sounds a great idea.
Currently stuck on finding births for Ann BRAND (BRAN/BRANN on OPR) who married Wm Eagle in 1798 North Leith and Margaret PEARSON who married John Lankshear in London in 1808 but in 1851 shows born Scotland - around 1781/82. Currently doing some reviews with the 10 free credits.
Thanks for suggestions - I have added the IGI ideas to my page

Here are some others I have
The National Archives of Scotland Home Page http://www.nas.gov.uk/

The Midlothianshire, ScotlandGenWeb Project http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~sctmln/

Thank you all this is very useful but some links etc duplicate what is already on the "Where do I start" thread here:
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,24468.0.html
There some other basic where to get info stickied at the top of the board. Plus we have a full Resources board here...
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/board,367.0.html
Please do a search on the URL you intend to post as multiple links out of RC I believe deteriorates our Google rating and we get punted down the results returns. So people won't find us.
All the best,
Pam

Hi Pam,
Are you 'suggesting' to us that we abandon this thread?
I thought it would be good to have all links in one place.

PS Welcome to Rootschat.
Thank you Elizabeth and Anne for your comments.
Archives and libraries are not the same though. Some local archives will be based in a library building (I think the Mitchell is like this, as is Perth & Kinross) but most are not and have completely different sources. A good local library should tell people wanting to look at original documents about their local archive. The local archive is where you can flesh out the bones of your family history! It's amazing what can be found in unpublished, untranscribed sources.

I think it's an brill idea Dave,
Ment to post sooner but lost the thread

All I am saying is duplication of threads many times damages Rootschat.

All I am saying is duplication of threads many times damages Rootschat.
Thanks for the clarification Pam.
I thought for a while you were 'telling us off'. :o
I should have known better. We know you're not like that.
I realise a lot of the links have been posted before. However, they do tend to get lost amongst some other 'stuff'.
I'm not convinced that 'duplication of threads' will 'damage' Rootschat. Google and other search engines don't work that way.
However, and in any case, this is not a duplicate thread, I'm simply trying to compile a comprehensive list, in one place, of up to date resources we can all use for Scottish research.
I'm glad you are not asking us to abandon this thread - it does seem popular.
Anyway folks, I'm off to kip now but will come back over the next couple of days to add your links to the original post.
Dave.
Added - thanks for the input everyone.
