he`s a street sweeper, but there are no children in census. sorry.

Hi Irene, thanks for looking. I've no idea where they were if they aren't showing on the census. Could you possibly look and see if they are in the 1861... Young William should be 4 and John 1. Many thanks. Jim

Hi,
I will have a look for your Elliots at Records Office.

Had a good long look for your Elliots on 1861 and 1871 Census without luck.
Even looked up your birth dates to check them!
Looked at marriages and deaths, no findings.
What I did find was a census entry which may be your family. Perhaps they left their son William working in Scotland and went off to England to find work. Just a thought.
1871 Census
42 Parliamentry Row Barony Glasgow
Robert Logan 75 Labourer
Mary McCulloch 35 daughter Housekeeper
William Mc Culloch 34 son-in-law engine fitter
William Elliot 14 grandson shopboy
Good luck with your search

Thanks for that, much appreciated. The family later became fairground folk, so maybe the wandering came from this generation. The Elliot / Logan connection certainly makes sense, there are a couple of other children (both Mary) attributed to William Elliot & Elizabeth Logan in Dumfries & Perth that I discounted as being too far off track, but who knows with this family? If you get a chance, can you see where ROBERT LOGAN was in 1861, that might be another line to follow. Thanks again. Jim

Glad I could help.
Unfortunately I will not be going back to Records Office for some time, too costly a venture!
If you post an 1861 Census lookup, someone else may help who has access to records.
Good luck,
O
