Post by: somersetpat on Thursday 21 May 09 08:11 BST (UK)
I  am looking for any information re John Lewis of St Clears who was in  Newbridge near Abercarn circa 1872.
John married Mary Powell of  Trevethin .
Mary was the daughter of Isaac & Mary Powell.

John & 3 sons were stone masons .

Thanks in advance

do you have their marriage certificate? If so, what is his father's name?  If not, you need to get it to find out his father's details
John Lewis dec qtr 1872 Newport vol 11a pg 439 with Mary Powell on the same page.

I can see a possible in 1861 for John

Arno's Vale Turnpike, Knowle, Bedminster, Somerset RG9/1706 folio 82 pg 23
James Lewis head mar 37 toll collector b. Carmarthenshire, Wales
Caroline wife 40 b. Somerset
John son 9 b. Carmarthenshire, St Clairs
Martha dau 9 b. St Clairs

This birth reg would fit with twins being registered St Clears
John Lewis sept qtr 1852 Carmarthen vol 11a pg 483
Martha Lewis sept qtr 1852 Carmarthen vol 11a pg 439

Caroline gives her place of birth as Chelwood in other census years and is living with daughter Martha in 1901 in Barry, Glamorgan. Martha married John James Horner june qtr 1872 Bristol vol 6a pg 190.
