Title: Questions about Firefox
Post by: Malcolm Bull on Wednesday 20 May 09 18:40 BST (UK)
For various reasons, I have moved from IE to Firefox, but I have come across 2 problems thus far.  Can anyone help me?

1]  On my websites, I specify text in the ALT field of an <IMG tag so that, when the reader's mouse hovers over the image, the piece of text appears.  This works OK in IE but nothing appears when I view the page with Firefox

2]  When I view ROOTSCHAT with Firefox, the NOTIFY / NEW TOPIC / NEW POLL buttons don't appear

Hi,

1). The alt attribute is meant to be used as an alternative text if the image is not available, it is not intended to be used as mouse-over text. To show a mouse-over text on images or image-maps, use the title attribute, like this:

<img src="myimage.gif" alt="A description of myimage" title="Text used for mouse-over" />

2). Displays OK here - using Firefox 3.0.10 (rv:1.9.0.10 Gecko/2009042513) running under Linux.

Have you tried a refresh by pressing CTRL=F5 together ?

They appear as normal for me.

Hi,

Not sure about the text/image display issue, but all the buttons are here for me too, I also use FireFox (latest version) with WinXP Pro, SP3 and half a gazzilion FF extensions loaded...

Patricia

Works ok for me on a variety of XP and Linux OSs.  You haven't got Java/script blocked have you?  Look under Tools/Options/Content, or if you have Noscript or a similar addon tell it to permit rootschat.

Re 1 - As said,  IE was the villain here in not conforming to the HTML standards

re 2 - This can sometimes happen if you are using Noscript or Adblock unless you add Rootschat to the accepted areas

Works OK for me too.  Don't know what version of Firefox I have, but it's the latest and I've got Windows Vista.

Thanks to all.  I resolved both my problems with your help.

If I can add one further note of praise for FIREFOX, I must say that the Add-Ons are excellent features of FIREFOX.  Once I got used to handling them [or, at least, handling the ones I've come across], I was more than impressed by what they let you do.

Now, why didn't IE think of them?

Thanks again to all

Basically Old Hippyy's answer, but can I just repeat that this is an Explorer error, that the text appears ('tooltip' is the usual name.).

The correct use of alt="some text" is that "some text" appears on your web page, if the image cannot be found.
IE should not be showing the 'alt='- text as a tooltip.

There is another attribute, title="some text" - This is the correct way to make a tooltip, and opera and firefox work correctly if you use title="some text"".

Another use of the 'alt=' attribute is

- search engines will index the text they find there. This is especially usueful when the file-name of the image doesn't say much about the image itself

- "page readers", which translate web pages to speech, for people with sight-deficiencies will read the alt-texts and translate them as well.

You can also use title="some text" on <input ...>, <table > and < href= ....>- tags.
Forms and tables are usually self-evident, but it might be handy to add some information to your links,
i.e. title="external link to .... , opens in new window/tab" etc.

Must agree with Malcolm, the add-ons for FireFox are fantastic...I run a project to maintain and manage public access PC's in about 50 libraries across a HUGE area and the FF add-ons we've found to help us maintain the connectivity and security are amazing.  I love FireFox!

Patricia

One great add on for FF  is 'Any Color' https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/6991

It allows you to change Firefox to Any Color and create your own personalized theme.

Hi all,

Here's something we have posted on a closed group to support our 'computer library assistants'...thought some people might find it useful, the topic we have it under is "favourite FF extensions, and why...?"

FoxyProxy:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2464
An add-on which is particularly useful if you have a laptop which connects to a number of different internet connections, you can
configure the proxy settings for each internet connection and change them with a single click...fantastic!

Plus
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1865

Plus Element Hiding Helper
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/4364
Both of these block popups in Firefox, save bandwidth and help to secure your web browseer - really fantastic!

BetterGmail2:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/6076
Makes Gmail work better!

Colorful tabs:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1368
Helps to differentiate between different tabs open at once - and I usually have lots.  You can play around with it and make it display
certain domains in certain colours!

DownThemAll:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/201
Download manager that runs inside firefox - you can pause your downloads, resume them later, after you've restarted your PC, manage
multiple downloads, etc.  Fantastic application!

FEBE:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2109
Backup manager for Firefox settings and extensions.  Very useful to make sure you can restore your original firefox!

ForecastFox:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/398
Just cause I like it :)  You can also get it to show weather in a number of different cities in rotation!

SearchbarAutosizer:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1172
I'm a great believer in trying to de-clutter stuff - this way the searchbar stays small until you need to use it.

Update Notifier:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2098
All these extensions get improved and updated all the time - you just need to configure it to check for updates every time Firefox starts,
very useful.

Gmail Manager:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1320
Bit of a bugger to set up, BUT it allows you to be logged into more than one gmail account at once in the same Firefox session, you can
switch between them without having to log off.  Brilliant!

Web of Trust is pretty fantastic too.

As you can see, I spend a LOT of time thinking about FireFox and it's extensions!

Patricia
