Title: 1901 Census Lookup please
Post by: CaioResearcher on Tuesday 19 May 09 21:36 BST (UK)
Hi,

Wondered if SKS would do a 1901 look up for the following elusive ancestor!

Sorry, but all I know is that he is an adult (don't know age) name
Llewellyn Davies and occupation Fireman (I presume in a colliery and not actual
fireman as we know today). These details from his daughter's marriage certificate in 1901.
Place, Neath, maybe Llantwit, county of Neath, Glamorgan he would be living, not sure where born
exactly.

Many thanks

Helen

Hi Helen

It might be easier to trace forward from 1881, when presumably his daughter would still be at home as a child?  Have you looked?

What is her name and age?

Kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

No matches in the places you specify in 1901 - at least one in 1881, including one with daughters May Hannah and Margaret Jane

RG11; Piece: 5342; Folio: 65; Page: 33

Any good?

Hi,

Slight problem I'm afraid.  The thing is he is the father of 2 illigitimate children.
I've found the mother, a widower, with her first 3 children, and the 2 illigitimate girls
on the 1891 and the family on the 1901, and 1881 and have managed to trace
the mother's family back.
I was not 100% sure of the father's identity until the 2 daughters marriage
certificates (the father of the 3 first born to the mother was already dead).
There was a clue on one daughter's birth cert. and family rumours, she having
been given the middle name of "Davies".  Then the 2 marriage certificates confirm,
father, Llewellyn Davies.  I cannot be sure which one he is on 1881 and therefore
as the marriage was dated 1901 and with an occupation, I thought a good shot.

JUST SEEN YOUR REPLY sorry, the daughters in question were called May Davies and
Elizabeth Jane.  They were living at 52 Water Street, Neath, Glamorgan sorry no folio
reg nos.  You can see the family (ill.daughters not born on source film 1342286, pro ref RG11, piece 5341, folio 47, page 28 on 1881 Census).

Helen

Ok that is tricky!

Who are the daughters, how old and where born?  Where is the mother at the time of the nearest censuses to their births?  Who is she?

Might not be back for a bit but if no-one else helps, I will carry on when I can.

Good night!

 :)

Sorry Arronroots, to simplify.

The mother was a Elizabeth Hunkin nee Hopkins who married a John Hunkin,
they had 3 daughters, Gwenllian, Mary Jane and Selina.  Selina was born just
after John Hunkin died in 1897.
The mother, Elizabeth 'took up' with a chap who some family members said was
a 'gentleman farmer' and his name was Davies.  Then came the certificates.
The only one farmer I could find in 1881 was at Penrhydriagriad a single
man of the name of Llewellyn Davies.  But then the certificate said 'fireman'.
Confused but determined I am - she says  with fingers crossed.

Helen

Post note :

On the 1881 Census which shows the mother, Elizabeth Hunkin and 2 of her daughters -
the address was 8 Cuthbertsons Court, Neath (but I believe this is in Water Street)

Hi Helen

I've just had another look.  Only three Llewelyns in 1891 - unless I am doing something wrong - and all in the same place Llangefelach.  One is only four years of age and the others are metal workers, so seem unlikely.

Hmmmm

Edit: forget that - something weird happened.  There are lots and lots in 1901 ...

Hi Arranroots,

Thanks for looking.  Does it help narrowing it down to just the area of Neath?

It may be he was a farmer as well as as a Fireman, which I presume is in a
Colliery but could well be in the term we mean today.

Helen

Hurrah!

Glad you liked that!  He's still at home with his old mum in 1901 - occupation there is coal tipper.  Address Clyne Cottages, Clyne, Glamorgan.

RG13 Piece 5055 Folio 79 Page 1

So he was still in the vicinity.

Wonder where he was in 1911?

I've heard the 1911 will be available end of June - so holding my breath! I can't believe it,
it appears there always is some family truth in rumours i.e., one relative told me that
an ancestor was a butcher took me years to find him as a farmer, however, she wasn't
wrong because later on finding a living relative on my journey to Wales, he said that
he used an old shed in the war to sell 'his wares' i.e., the butcher.  Comes together in the end.

So this Llewellyn was from a farm i.e., a gentleman farmer so the rumours were and
the certificate links to fireman.

You have made my day! Thank you.

Have you searched for the Llewellyn Davies listed below in the 1891 and 1901 census?

1881 census 22 Wind Street, Neath, Glamorgan
Eliza Davies, age 73 born Ewenny, Glamorgan, coal miner's widow
David Davies, son, age 36 born  Neath, Engine smith on railway
Griffith Davies, son, age 31 born Cadoxton, engine fitter at brewery
Llewellyn Davies, son age 29, born Cadoxton, engine smith, unemployed
Ann Evans, servant, age 21, born Neath, general domestic servant

It looks like you have the correct Llewellyn Davies (from Penrhiwangharad), but it would be wise to check out this other unmarried Llewellyn Davies who lived on Wind Street in Neath not far from Elizabeth Hopkins Hunkin.

The Davies family from Penrhiwangharad is my family, so if you have the correct Llewellyn, we are distantly related.

Best regards
Richard Davis
