Title: Desperate for Help
Post by: On Sharp Blind on Tuesday 19 May 09 11:59 BST (UK)
Hello all, sorry it's quite long but here goes........ if i may explain....my Mother has recently discovered that the woman she believed to be her true Mother, is in fact not. From what we can gather, her eldest brother and herself are children of JOSEPH CONLON and STANLEY CONLON nee PRENDERVILLE ( could be CONLAN )....whilst her younger sister was the child of JOSEPH CONLON and ANNIE CONLON nee LYNCH.
We are very confused as to the name STANLEY but the only documents we have are copies of my Mother and her brother's birth and baptismal certificates (4 documents all wrote at different times), where it states without question the Mothers name is STANLEY CONLON. In fact the experts at the national archives had a look, and all agreed her name WAS Stanley.
STANLEY died in a 3 month period between June 1941 and Sept.1941, when Joseph remarried 19/9/1941. Quite possibly she died as a result of pregnancy. We were initially quite shocked by how soon JOSEPH remarried, but the experts also assured us this was not uncommon for a man left with children, to find a surrogate mother so to speak. Joseph Conlon died in Dublin 30/1/1950.

My Mother was only a new born when her birth Mother died and only 9 when her Father died, and whilst loving very much the woman she calls Mother who brought both her and her brother up, she feels she owes it to Stanley to try and find her grave. In fact she has never been back to her Fathers grave since she was 9, something that leaves her heart aching.
My sister and myself have been searching for both graves for a few years now, but with no success, and finding any information on Stanley Prenderville has proved impossible with neither my Mother or her Brother knowing anything about their childhood, as they explained....it just wasnt spoke about after their Father died.
My mother is not in the best of health and this has caused her some distress, however she has expressed a wish to find out as much as she can about Stanley, with the hope of eventually visiting both her Father and Stanleys grave.

It would be wonderful if anyone on here could shed a bit of light onto any of this for us.

Many Thanks...Anthony

If you know what church they used sometimes they can help as they know which undertakers were about when the deaths occured, and most in Dublin are family concerns that have been in business for generations.

It's worth a try anyway, good luck.

I found a Joseph Conlan, Sarah Conlan and Joseph Conlan (Jun) living at 8 Bride St., Iveagh Buildings, Wood Quay on the 1939-1940 electoral register.

Hope they are connected and I'm not steering you in the wrong direction.

Dara.

Thanks for your replies both.....It's hard work being over here in England, searching for people in another country.
Last visit home i went to the church where she would have attended, they had nothing. The electoral roll is probably my last hope at the minute. I tried both addresses where my Mother and her brother were born, they didnt appear on them.....such a shame, as the only electoral roll i can find online for Dublin is the same year my uncle was born. I dont think my Mother had a brother, Joseph (Jun), but i will certainly keep a note of this.
I'm going back over in a couple of weeks with my sister to have another look, in particular the 1941 electoral roll.... i'm hoping they appear on that one and it might just clear up the whole name thing....maybe Stanley was a middle name.

Thanks again

The Electoral Roll is a list of eligible voters not a complete list of everyone at a particular address.

My Grandfather was about 35 yrs old so was eligible to vote, so i'm just assuming my Grandmother was around about the same age, well hoping more than anything. If so we might just pick them on the 1941 electoral roll.

Oh!

I thought the Electoral Roll was Registered voters.

I think you should try to obtain Stanley's death cert from the GRO (now in Abbey St.). This usually includes an address.

The Dublin City electoral rolls for 1939/40 are available online at : http://www.dublinheritage.ie/electoral/index.php

you need a DjVu viewer component to view these - see http://www.celartem.com/en/download/djvu.asp

other years are available in various Libraries .. those for Dublin City are at the Dublin City Public Libraries & Archive, 138-144 Pearse Street (http://www.dublinheritage.ie/)

Just a thought. If you know the Church she attended perhaps it might be an idea to try the schools in the area.

This is a site that you may want to check.
http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/

Marriage
Joseph Conlan, Dublin south, Oct-Dec. 1941
Vol. 2 Page 549
Annie Lynch, same information as above.
There is a death listed for Joseph in 1950. Do you have Joseph's death certificate. it may hold valuable information.
Also do you have any details about his siblings and parents. That may help you find his grave as well as Stanleys.

Hopefully, by using this site you can check all the Conlan's and alternate spellings to see if any names match what you know (your Mom and uncle) and also the Prenderville's. I didn't find any Stanley Conlan's or Prenderville listed but there are quite a few others listed. She may not have been born in the Dublin area. You did say that you had birth and baptismal certifcates for your Mom and uncle. do they list the church where the baptism took place. That is another starting point.

I assume that Annie Lynch Conlan is deceased. If so, do you know where she is buried and if it is in Dublin. I would start with the religious denomination and work backwards from there. The marriage certificate for Joseph and Annie should tell you where they married. If they married in a church and attended that church in Dublin, there is a good possiblity that Joseph is buried there.

Good luck with your search.
Val

Information listed on a death certificate: name, date and place, sex, marital status, occupation, age (in years), cause of death, informant, date of registration. Death certificates do NOT list, date and place of birth, spouse, children, parents, religion or place of burial.

I've had some success finding graves, by
1 getting the death cert, then
2. looking at all the newspapers for that day and the next 3-4 days
