Hello
Does anyone have access to reports about the anti German riots that occurred after the sinking of the Lusitania in 1915?
My German ancestors were in business in Birkenhead at the time and my GGF was interned in Lancaster.
I was wondering if there were reports of property damage that may have affected them.

Hi Skyblue
This is the only thing I can see on the riots, from the Wirral Globe
http://archive.wirralglobe.co.uk/1998/11/25/16407.html
mentions Watson St and Price St. But it does give you the book reference for Wirral Gleanings, perhaps your library could get it for you?
Hope this helps

Hi
Have you tried this on the Cheshiore boards? Birkenhead is there now, and there who know more.
Best wishes

Birkenhead was never in Lancashire, despite the rail and road tunnels!

Hi Emms
Thank you for your comment.I did think about posting this on the Cheshire board but thought more people would see it on the Lancs.
As I understand that one can't put the same post on different boards I don't know how to move it.

The problem with 2 posts at the same time is there is duplication of effort. You can repost on the Cheshire board, just put a link into this post so that people can see what has been found before or do a summary as part of the post.

OK, forgive me if I've got the wrong war or whatever but ...
When I was kid in Birkenhead there was a pork butchers on Oxton Road called Dashley's and damn fine pies and saugeses they made too. I believe their shop was attacked during anti-german riots, but the date I'm unsure of.

It was WW1. The Lusitania was sunk in 1915 by the Germans and that is what triggered off the riots. My people were hairdressers in Balls Road for many years in the earlier half of the 1900s.
Oh! I do love a good pie.

I have a feeling that some of the Boumphrey books have pictures in showing the damage done in Woodchurch Rd,Oxton Rd,and in Birkenhead and had some names in,I do have a book on the Lusitania which came out about 8 years ago but on checking can't find anything in it .
