Hi
I shall be going to the West Sussex RO again towards the end of June.
I am happy to do simple Parish Register look-ups from available transcripts or fiche. Please post on this thread with as much info as possible and I will see what I can do.

Hi Jan :)
Can i please take you up on your kind offer .
A death for David Goring from Worth. David was Baptised in 1792.
David`s youngest was Baptised in 1830.
On the SMI his Wife remarried at Worth in 1834,claiming to be a Spinster !!!!!
Thank-you
Omega

Hi Omega
I'll see if I can find a burial for him. Although if his wife claimed she was a spinster then maybe he left her rather than died. Could you post date of marriage please? Narrows down the timeframe for the search.
Jan ;)
-
Hi Jan
Barbara married 5th April 1834,Worth.
This is OHs family, past being shocked with the antics some got up to :D
hope this helps
Thank you
Omega
PS,i have searched for David incase he`d down a bunk :)

Hi Jan,
May I take up your generous offer? (Yet again!)
Sullington Marriages 1754-1811, WSRO Ref Par 190/1/1/3 (2 fiche).
The SMI has the following marriage.
Place: Sullington, West Sussex
Date: 27 Feb 1786
Subject: John BURCHELL, bach
Spouse: Susan SEARLE, sp
The PRTS transcript of Sullington Marriages does not have this; instead it has the following.
27/02/1786, John SEARLE and Sarah BURCHELL, both single
I think the two entries refer to the same event and one (or both) is seriously in error. I'd really like to know what the PR actually records for the marriage. Who's the bride and who's the groom, and was the bride's given name Susan or Sarah?
Further info - the SFHG website does not record any SMI correction for the event; Sullington is not well-covered by the online IGI and the marriage cannot be found there.
Thanks in advance,
Stovepipe

Hi Stovepipe
How very odd - I will check it out for you

Hi Jan,
Could you have a look for names of children baptised in St Nicholas Church in the parish of Worth to parents John Dancy and Eleanor. Eleanor died on 12 Dec 1826 according to the headstone at St Nicholas Church, Worth.
I have their children as
John born 1813 but died 1815 (buried in St Nicholas)
and then there is a male found in the 1841 born abt 1821 with them called "Lue Dancey" - never to be found or referenced again in any b/m/d records - intrigued ...
Michael
Sarah
Eleanor
Richard
I wonder if they had any other children or if they had another son John after their first son John died, and who this "Lue" was.
Many thanks
Penny
-
Hi Penny
Could you give me a bit more detail so I know what years to look at please.
Rough years of birth for the other children? Date of marriage for John and Eleanor?
Thanks
Jan ;)
Not to worry have found the extra info on the IGI so will check it all for you and see if I can find the mysterious Lue :D
-
Hi Jan & Penny :)
Hope you don`t mind me butting in but i have the Baptisums for Worth on Fiche.
I found this.
1st September 1822
Allen, underneath his name looks like DF,but writing is bad.
Son of John & Elinor Dancy,John a Carpenter.
Hope this helps in some way.
Omega
-
Hi Omega and Jan,
Thank you Omega, for looking that up;
The "Allen" could actually have been their daughter Ellen/Eleanor, named after her mum. Again, with the name Allen, I found no trace of the existence in any BMD records afterwards. "Elen" was found with her father in the 1841 and is absolutely definitely with her married sister Sarah in 1851 (marked as "sister") so I have no doubt Ellen was John's daughter.
However, did it definitely say Allen was a son? (This is a bit of a mystery because we generally absolutely beleive the parish records!)
I had in mind I should add the date of the wedding and then forgot to put it in - it was 2 March 1813 at St Nicholas Church, and Andrea kindly checked that and gave me the witness names.
If either of you are willing, I'd be really happy if the baptisms could be checked between 1813 and Dec 1826 because of this type of anomaly and to see if there were two Johns and any other children.
Thanks again,
Penny

Hi Penny
I either need a new pair of glasses or put in down to the writing.
Having another look ,your right,it is Elinor, even Mum`s name looks like Allen.
Sorry if i confused you.
Omega
-
Hi Penny and Omega
Eleanor is on the IGI as Allen mother Allen ;D Anyway since the writing is bad I will check everything as well you Omega - another pair of eyes always a good idea.
Jan ;)

Hi Jan
Glad i`m not alone ;D.
Two heads are better than one.
I think the Vicar used shorthand ;D or he`d had a bit to much of Holy Wine :D

Hi Jan
I've got an interesting one here. If you are able to look at original burial records would you be able to look at the burials of Robert and Alice Vincent who were buried at Cowfold on 2 March 1590. The transcripts that I have say suicide beside Alice's entry and I wondered if it was a double suicide and there is anything entered by Robert's name?

All noted Kerry
Jan ;)

Thanks Jan and it may well be spelt Vinsen. I've been looking at baptisms today for my Vincent family and some of the earliest are Venson or Vinsen as well as Vincent.

Hello Jan
Thanks for your kind offer. This is very kind of you. :)
Please can you look up the 'extra information' of a marriage from the Bishops Transcripts. Here is the marriage info given from the Sussex Marriage Index.
Linch, West Sussex, Date: 12 Feb 1740/1:
William HOUECK & Mary COMES
Extra Information: Bishops Transcripts (not in pr)
(Challen BT gives parish as Linchmere)
Ravelin

Hi Ravelin
I will check that for you. Linch and Linchmere are separate villages so will check both if necessary.
Jan ;)

Hello Jan
That would be great if you could check both parishes for me if necessary.
Many thanks. :)

Hello Jan,
Could you please check on a marriage between John Potter and Ann Burtenshaw on 25 Apr 1791 at Upper Beeding and see if there is any information regarding witnesses and if they were both of that parish. I believe their son James was baptised on 31 July 1791. Also is there any evidence that they had any other children in that parish or burials for any of them.
I am trying to establish whether John and Ann were from local families or if they came from Lewes or another parish.
Many thanks

Hi Flavia
Will have a look for you

Thanks Jan, much appreciated.

Hi Jan
Any chance of a look up in Bolney register for Jesse Gander born c1827? Wondering if he is a son of William and Mary who have daughters baptised there around that time. He is with them in 1841 but listed after the servants!
Thanks

Hi Kerry
I'm sorry but I couldn't find the burials for Robert and Alice - the 1590 burials didn't start on the fiche of the original till Jun for some unknown reason ??? There weren't any transcripts. Where did you get the info you have?
Jan ;)
-
Hi ravelin
Your marriage for William Houeck to Mary Comes on 12 Feb 1740 was in the Linch parish registers - no extra info.
Jan ;)

Jan ;)

Hello Jan
Thank you for doing that lookup for me. Very good of you. :)
Surprised that there is no extra info.
Good to confirm that they married in Linch and not Linchmere.
Thanks again.

Hi Andrea
Bolney
Baptism
Nov 5th 1826 Jesse Gander son of William and Mary Labourer of Bolney
Maybe Jesse was a servant but still lived at home?
Jan ;)
-
Hi Ravelin
Sadly the earlier the record the less information you will find - witnesses weren't included in the registers until 1754.
Jan ;)
-
Yes that right Jan. Earlier the records the less info generally.
I was surprised because a fellow rootschatter who found the marriage on the Sussex Marriage CD indicated that there was extra info for the marriage.
I am very happy to have found this marriage anyway. It means i can begin tracing the Howick line in the 1600's - 1700's in this area of Sussex.

Hi jan
How odd, my transcript came from a CD, the PRTS registers for Cowfold.
Thanks for looking, I shall have to try and investigate that one some more. It was a curious one, the fact that it mentioned suicide beside Alice's name.
Kerry
-
It is very odd - I think I shall have to have another squint, the registers were very faint and maybe what looked like June was Jan, which would make more sense! There weren't many, so I'll see if I can see anything next week. I must admit to not being very good with 16th century writing :D
Jan ;)
-
Hi Jan,
Excellent help, as always - thank you.
Two marriages on the same day merged into one by the transcriber who thereby got both of 'em wrong - that's something I didn't expect, but it solves the problem wonderfully. And the brother & sister marrying sister & brother scenario looks promising - something for me to investigate.
Best wishes,
Stovepipe

I usually find it easier to read upside down and squinting sideways ;D not easy is it!!! ::)

Thank you Jan. That is a great help and confirms what I suspected.

Hi Ravelin
Just re-read your request - I looked at the fiche of original parish registers not the Bishop's Transcripts as you had asked. Sorry.
The BT are only available on microfilm or by ordering up the original documents which I don't do to keep things straight forward and maximise the number of look-ups I can do. The mention of transcripts at the start of thread refers only to various paper transcripts done of some years for some parishes. Sorry for the confusion - I shall add "not Bishop's Transcripts" when I post my next offer ;D
Jan ;)

Goodmorning Jan :)
A BIG Thank-you for finding David Goring`s burial.
His poor Wife was heavily pregnant :(
I beleive the Goring`s from Balcombe were relatated,thank-you for those dates.
Feb 37th :Di found amusing.

Hello Jan
Don't worry about not looking at the Bishops Transcripts for Linch or Linchmere. This ancestry mularky can get very confusing at times. An easy mistake to be made. :)
It is very good of you to do these lookup offers in the first place.
Thanks for your help. :)
Ravelin

Hello Jan
Thanks for the information on Upper Beeding Potter family. This does seem to confirm that they moved to another Parish and could possibly be my ancestors in Lewes.
Your help is much appreciated.
Flavia

Glad the info was of some help Flavia
Jan ;)

Thanks Jan, very much for looking those up. The burial entries were really helpful too, and yes they were all my lot. Just about all the Dancy's in the Sussex censuses, bar just one, were from the same family.
I would have replied sooner, but for some reason I missed the alert notice that the thread was being updated!
Penny

Not to worry Penny, glad the entries were useful.
