I left Mary Ann till near the end because she's relatively recent (I can remember her) so I assumed the documentation would be in place...what a mistake! Can anyone help me locate Mary Ann Mullin, born c 1878 (I have reason to believe she knocked a few years off her age on her marriage cert, which is where this date comes from). Place of birth, might be Lancashire, Liverpool or Ireland, probably Galway. Father's name John, occupation Labourer. There doesn't seem to be anyone who quite fits the bill. Thanks.

Hello Digital1. When did Mary Ann marry? Do you have her on any Census? I need something to work back from.

Hi All ;D
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,298679.15.html
Mary Ann MULLEN or MULLIN married Albert CLAYTON - Sep Qtr 1912, registered Bolton Lancashire
Mary Ann is believed to be either Irish (Galway) or born in England of Irish parents..... She is thought to have died 1958, exact year and place unknown. Albert (Snr) died before 1940 of TB. He was a General labourer/Foreman. The topic above appears to date him as born abt 1879 in Bolton.
their son: Albert CLAYTON (Jnr) b 1913, at 71 Venice Street, Bolton, Lancs
Apparently Jnr tracked the MULLIN's back to a cottage from which they were evicted - but he left no clues as to how he did it (though it was apparently through documentation)
Hi Digital1
As it seems you have the marriage cert of Mary Ann and Albert in 1912:
What was the address given for Mary Ann?
Was she stated as a spinster?
Who were the witness?
Was her father said to be deceased?
Did she write her own name? Or sign with her mark?
And could I ask what is the reason you have to believe she may have knocked a few years off her age when she married as a 34 year old in 1912? How old do you think she really was?
Also another thought, if you're heading into Irish research - the surname MULLEN/MULLIN could well be preceded by a "Mc" at some stage.........
Cheers

Sorry - I should have given more information, I was so frustrated at not finding her birth cert when I thought it would be easy. I have:
Mary Ann Mullin, married Albert Clayton 6 Aug 1910. She lived at 32 Nebo Street, Bolton at St Peter and Paul's RC Church in Bolton. She gave her occupation as card room hand and was a spinster. Father - John Mullin (deceased). Witnesses - Catherine Mullin (sister) and James Corless (cousin). I honestly can't remember why I think she knocked a few years off her age, it's one of those assumptions I've never challenged, perhaps something I heard in childhood. I've been through the BMDs and can't find one which is right...there's a Mary Ann of the right date in Liverpool but the father's name is wrong.
I had a real success tonight tracing an ancestor who should have been untraceable...just one of those strokes of luck....but Mary Ann is proving elusive!
Thank you for the idea about the Mc. That hadn't occured to me. I've become all too accustomed to the forms of spelling in Irish research but Mc is one form I'd not considered.

Hi digital1
I think I have found her. Started with the census and found:
1901 - Bolton, Lancs.
Mary A. Mellin 25 born Bolton
Catherine Mellin 21 sister born Bolton
RG13 - 3627 - 75 - 30
1891 - Bolton, Lancs.
Ellen Mullan 23 born Tyldsley, Lancs.
John Mullan brother 18 born Bolton
Mary Ann Mullan sister 15 ditto
Kate Mullan sister 11 ditto
RG12 - 3121 - 48 - 7
1881 - 46 Bk. Pump Street, Bolton, Lancs.
John Mullin 44 General Labourer born Ireland
Julia Mullin 40 ditto
Ellen Mullin 13 born Tyldsley, Lancs.
John Mullin 9 born Bolton
Mary A. Mullin 5 born Bolton
Catherine Mullin 1 born Bolton
Catherine Corley 60 lodger born Ireland
RG11 - 3841 - 129 - 39
I have only looked at transcripts for the above. Clearly the same family but note the different spellings of surname and also you were right in that Mary Ann 2 years older than thought.
Births show Mary Ann Mullan born June qtr. 1876 Bolton
(Catherine's as Mullin in 1880)
There are also possible deaths for the parents although the ages are wrong compared to 1881 Census:
John Mullen bc.1846 died Jun.qtr. 1889 Bolton
Julia Mullen bc.1848 died Mar.qtr. 1891 Bolton

Thanks for this. These changes in spelling are so confusing! I'll send off for the cert tomorrow. As to the variable birth dates...my head is hurting! But it looks as if you've found Mary Ann for me and I appreciate this.
