:) Hi Everyone. Just found out my Grandad William Norvell Blackbird and his family were living at 10 Wellfield Terrace, Bill Quay when the 1911 Census was taken. Does anyone know if the address still exists? Thanks.

You can check it out here, which will also give you a location map.

If you go to http://gis.durham.gov.uk/website/interMAP/viewer.htm and enter the post code NE100SS in search it will centre the map on 11/12 Wellfield Terrace. You can see the earlier maps as well.

Hi
The postcode finder at the Royal Mail site gives an accurate Postcode and map:
www.royalmail.com
It still exists with a Gateshead postal address.

It gives the same post code that I gave, and the map shows the individual houses :)

Couldn't get your map to work stan - I always go to the royal mail site though - I like it :)

Thanks everyone for their help. I think the house does still exist. I will have to visit and see when I am back in the country in December. Thanks again. :)
-
If I have time, Dougal, I'll maybe pop over the Tyne Bridge and take a photo before December :)

:) Thanks Gadget, that would be great. In return I will try to send some of the sunshine from here to there for you !

Hi
did you manager to get your photo?
I've just joined rootschat but live in Bill Quay and would be happy to nip round and get your photo as the street is only round the corner from me.
Let me know

Have you seen the weather over the last month ::)
If you can pop around, I'd be grateful. Tis not easy to get there on the way to the Stadium of Light :)
-
No problem. I'll have a walk round over the weekend - currently I go to work in the dark and come back in the dark so a piccie then wouldn;t be much cop!

That would be really kind of you. I don't get over that way very often unless, as I said, I'm on the way to a Sunderland match.
Also, welcome to Rootschat :)

Imeldageordie,
I didn`t get to Bill Quay to photo the house - the weather was horrendous while I was there (well, it was very pretty but not very good for travelling round using public transport) so I would be very grateful if you could photograph it for me.
Welcome to Rootschat :) and thank you.
Kindest regards

P.S. Just to make you all feel better about the weather in the UK.... it`s been raining all day here in Cyprus ::)

Hi Tracey
Here's your photo;s. Number 10 is the blue door. Hope they're okay.

Hi Julie ;D
Wow- that`s fabulous. Thank you so much for your time and effort.

Hi ;D
I found a photo of Wellfield Terrace in about 1904. Isn`t it lovely?
I think number 10 must be at the far end of the street. Unless you know different Julie?
Kindest regards
Tracey

Although....
Looking at Julie`s marvellous photos - are the two red doors to the left numbered 11 and 12?
So that would mean that number 10 would be on the bottom block on my old photo? With number 1 nearest the camera.
Just a tiny detail, but .....
Tracey
-
That's right Tracey. It is the block nearest the camera. Looks a bit different now, as Wellfield Terrace is on Shields Road, otherwise known as the A185 and an allotment is rightt next to the Terrace, followed by Stonehills industrial estate! Across the road used to be a farm, which is what our estate is built on apparently.

Do you happen to know where Milnew Quay was?
-
Hi, and welcome to Rootschat :)
I would start a new topic with your query about Milnew Quay as more people will see it and you are more likely to get someone who knows the area.

Thank you for the advice. Do you know what I have to do to start a new topic?

Kathy, :)
Go back to the Durham general board and on the right hand side there is a button saying ` new topic` Just click on that and off you go !!
You`ll soon find that there is lots of help here. Good luck with your search.
