Title: Rolfe family, Great Yarmouth - COMPLETED
Post by: CoastalPlains on Friday 15 May 09 11:18 BST (UK)
Could somebody help me please?

I am looking for the 1901 census entry for Frederick Oscar (b1862) and Gertrude Ellen (b1857) Rolfe, last seen in Great Yarmouth in 1891.
Their children in 1891 were Elsie and Wharton, and I would like to know whether they had any more.

Many thanks,
Louise

I am still looking for these Rolfes, and I cannot find death records for Frederick, or Wharton. Would someone mind giving me a fresh pair of eyes on this please?

I know that Gertrude is listed in a town directory on her own in 1921, which suggests she could be widowed.

I can find Fred's father (Frederick Wharton Rolfe) who died in 1884, but Frederick jnr is nowhere to be found.

The same goes for his son Wharton. I know there is a chance he has not been transcribed yet, but his name doesn't appear in a 1911 census search so I'm wondering whether he had died.

Searching Ancestry, there is a member who has Wharton Rolfe (born 1888) in their tree, complete with death date and spouse's name. I don't have full membership at the moment, so if anyone wouldn't mind looking for me I would be hugely grateful.

Thank you in advance,
Louise

Hello Louise   :)

The dates given on that tree are:

Wharton Hogarth Rolfe  1888  -  1937

Frederick Oscar Rolfe  1862  -  1947

Gertrude Ellen Rolfe (nee Freeman)  1857  -  1935

Elsie Louise Rolfe (nee Chapman)  1890  -  1967  (Wharton's wife)

Wharton's children:

Eric  1912  -  1997
Lilian Gertrude  1917 - 1990

Hope this helps   ;)

Sorry -  mmn = Chaplin   :-[

Louise  -  don't get too excited yet  :-\

I'm struggling to match those details to BMD  :-\

So far the only one I've managed is birth of Lilian G Rolfe mmn. Chaplin Q2. 1917 Wakefield.  :-\

I'll keep trying  :)

I feel a bit daft, I just typed "Wharton Hogarth Rolfe" into Google and got only 1 page as a result, and all the details there match up to what you found (sorry, I should've done that first)
It shows that Elsie was from Yorkshire and they married there, so Wakefield sounds right.

At least Wharton's parents named him in such a way to make our job easier!

Thank you very very much.

Can I ask how you found those please?  Is there a way to search the years that haven't been transcribed on FreeBMD?

Edit -
Actually, there is another Gertrude E Rolfe who dies in Q.3 1935 in Great Yarmouth, age 77 - I think this is her, the age and location sound right

Me neither, between Wharton/Warton Rolfe/Rolf/Ralph there's nothing. That's why I thought he could've died young.

Maybe they were reckless young things and never married?
I really appreciate your help looking at this  :)

That would be a nice thought, and would tie in with the first child being born in 1912.
For now I'm going to take that as the story, and maybe come back to it another time.

Thank you again, so much, for all your help

Hello,

I see you were looking at the Rolfe family. WH Rolfe particularly who was my great grand father.  If you have not found out already they got married in Canada.

I have further details if you wish.

Regards,

Julian Marsh

Hi Julian,

Sorry for the delay in reading your reply (arranging a marriage of my own!)

How lovely to find out that they got married in Canada.

This was pretty much the extent of my research on the Rolfe family; I was looking into them as previous occupants of a house rather than as relatives of my own.

I don't have anything else I can share with you, but would love to hear any more information about the family if you wouldn't mind.

Best wishes,
Louise

Hi,

Thanks for responding.

Would that address be 75 King street?

Is that in Gorleston?

Thanks,

Hi Julian, yes 75 King Street but it's Great Yarmouth, not Gorleston. They are a few miles apart.
