Hi Patsy

Hull County Council have historic photographs.  They used to be available to view on line, but they are not at the moment.  Their website states:

Quote
Our extensive photographic collection includes photographs and postcards held at the City Archives and The Local Studies Library which provide a visual history of the City and its surrounding areas from the late 19th century to the 1980s.

The photographs include those originally taken to support the work of the Housing Department and the City Engineer providing a unique record of the slum clearance programmes from the 1930s to the 1980s and the damage suffered by the City during the Second World War.

The postcards include the highly acclaimed Renton Heathcote collection, with postcards from the early 20th century to the 1990s, as well as collections deposited by individuals over the years.

At present only the details of the photographs are included and no images are accessible from this site. However, work is on-going to attach the images to the text and we hope to have this service available in the coming months.

In the meantime, if you find a photograph you would like to view or order, please call either the Hull City Archives or the Local Studies Library for further information.

They have said "In order that staff can prepare for the move to their new home in the Hull History Centre, the service is now closed to the public".

When the photographs will be available to view on line again, I have no idea.  I see from the Hull History Centre website that the new building is supposed to be finished in Autumn 2009, so I'm not sure why they had to close the Archives service to the public so many months ago.

I bought loads of photos from them last year but, unfortunately, none of the Hodgson Street area, as none of my ancestors lived there.

Hello postylady

I have a living relative by marriage, who can reminisce all day about the Sculcoates district of Hull.  Unfortunately, he's currently laid up in the York hospital after an unexpected op, otherwise I would phone him and ask him about the areas you mention.  I will try and do this when he is better.   ::)

In the meanwhile,  if you're interested please have a look in my thread of "Lynch of Hull".

From this list it looks like there's 3 photos of Hodgson Street for sale:

http://www.hullheritageprints.co.uk/list%20of%20streets.htm

My family lived in the Durham Street area and I didn't see any online photos of the short Terraces so I doubt if you'll ever discover an official photo of Durham Terrace.

If I can't find an old photo I look for the next best thing on the property for sale websites.

Cheers,

Hello Postylady

Albert's discharge from hospital was a little delayed, but we had a long chat to-day, and he remembers first hand, Hodgson St, very well.    ;)

He says that there used to be a tannery there.  The cowhides were tanned in preparation for attaching to the underside, fronts of the trawlers, so as to protect the fishing nets.   ::)

Next chat I will ask about your relatives, as he chatted for ages about his very good hospital experience!   ;D

Cheers

Hi Dan

Thanks for the info, i didn't know there used to be a tanyard there, i know there is one down bankside area, or has that one closed now.

Glad to hear your relative is doing well.  If you need any names of my relatives just ask, my relatives lived down york terrace, which was down hodgson st, and Durham Terrace off the same street.

Me my mam and dad used to go drinking on a weekend in a pub down Hodgson street, around 20 years ago, before i started doing my family tree, it's just strange that we never knew of the relevence of this street and our families.

Hello

Yes,  Albert would love to know the names of your relatives,..........   ;D   ;D

Firstly, he wondered, LizzieW, if your relative, George William Wright, is connected in some way, to the William Wright Docks for the larger ships than the fishing trawlers?   ???

He also gave a very interesting description of the subway at the end of Witty St, which was the access to the fishing trawlers dock, which used to flood!

And, a pub, sounded like "Rainers", where the fisherman stopped in on their way home, after long trips away fishing nr Scapa Flow, pockets bulging with their wages, and splashed the cash'!   ;)

He remembers the tobacconist/sweet shop, selling newspapers as well.

AND, the customs man, who used to stand waiting for disembarking fishermen, and accost them, even though away on their trips, they hadn't actually landed anywhere else!    >:(

He was always exempt from these searches, as he was wireless man, therefore allowed to disembark early, and never was accosted!    ;D

Cheers

Hi Dan,

By the way i'm Posty  ;D

Thanks for getting back, my grandad was called Alfred John Smith, married Beatrice Brumhead 1933, his father before him was George John Smith married Ethel Goodison, but maybe he might have known some of their siblings.

Alf was born 1910 in a place called 'wawne terrace' down hodgson street, then 'york terrace' before he was married, his father was down as a dock labourer, although he had served in the boer and ww1.

I have heard of the pub 'rainers' i'm sure it is still standing, will have to find out.

Thanks again Dan

Can anyone please tell me whether there is a War Memorial in the Sculcoates area?

I am trying to trace my great great uncle Walter Dixon.  He was a private in the East Yorkshire regiment and was killed in the First World War.  I have details of his grave in France via the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, but wondered whether he is remembered on a memorial in England.  I last have him age 25 living in 1901 as a boarder at 39 Cave Street.  He was an ironmongers clerk, b. 1876 in Winterton, Lincolnshire.  His father Robert Dixon was a cab (hansom cab) proprietor in Sculcoates in the 1890s.  By 1901 his parents were living in Hotham, Yorks.

Hi ybellygirl,

Here's a photo of the Hotham war memorial

http://www.dalestrails.co.uk/Hotham2.htm

and on this genuki webpage here are the memorial inscriptions but unfortunately it looks like your family must have moved home before 1914 :

http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/Misc/PhotoTs/ERY/HothamWM1_WM.html

There were little local memorials everywhere which were raised by subscription; for instance my family joined in the cost to have a list of local boys named on a plaque which was mounted on the side of a local Marfleet shop (since placed elsewhere).  Some memorial lists are in churches and some in schools and colleges, and I think Hull Salvation Army centre had one too.

The Hull Heroes website only lists names submitted by visitors to the web such as myself.  If ever I find a photo of Henry Flemme I'll submit that too.

Good luck
Rena

Thanks. I'm well flummoxed now as when I tried the 1911 census site it drew a blank.  It must be the right person.  I'm sure he'll be recorded on a memorial somewhere...  It's just that his one remaining niece, my great aunt is still living.  She got some peace of mind when we tracked down his Commonwealth War Grave record.

Ybellygirl, I seem to remember that at least one of the WWI memorials was destroyed by bombing during WWII, so bear that in mind. My g uncle was a Reckitts man and they had two tablets covered with the names of their fallen. My g uncle is (or was) on the one that is missing. I managed to get a copy of a company magazine showing a picture of its inauguration where two tablets are clearly shown, but nobody knows what happened to the second one. If you do find links to Reckitts, their company historian is fantastically helpful. PM me and I will provide details. He sent me copies of my g uncle's obituary in the company magazine as well as various other pieces in which his name features.

Forgot to say lots of my rellies resided in Hodgson Street as well. G granddad was partial to his beer - I have heard comments about how he used to drink it by the barrel load, not the pint (which might account for my granddad's teetotal habits - that and a methodist wife perhaps?)

LOL, It's a small world isn't it - my mother and her father also worked at Reckitts.   She left 1938 with a bronze life saving medal as a souvenir and he retired early 1950's with blobs of black lead under his skin as his souvenir.  He then worked as one of the first lollipop men and when he died Reckitts Welfare made regular visits to make sure his widow was o.k.

Can you PM me how to contact the company historian please?

For Rena and anyone else who needs the information, I will dig out the details when I get a spare five minutes. I know vaguely which pile of papers it is in, but the prospect of wading through it is rather daunting so I will (as usual) leave it until the current list of tasked deemed urgent by my wife is completed. Expect it on Wednesday at the latest and if you hear nothing, assume I'm having a senior moment and send me a PM as a reminder

Hi postylady

I think your relatives Alfred John Smith who married Beatrice Brumhead may have adopted my grandfather Dennis Brumhead (later Dennis Smith) after Beatrices sister Clara died at an early age - leaving three boys orphaned. One stayed a Brumhead, one went to his Aunts and became Smith (my grandad) and the other became a Jennison.

Do you know if this is correct?

Thanks

Hi Lizzie

Just saw yr posting on here and noticed you are doing DaCosta surname in Hull. I have a family of that name but they dropped the Da bit. I have an Arthur Costa son of Joseph who was a blacksmith off Hessle Road. Arthur married Martha Ince and they had a shop in Manchester DStreet.

Any connections?

Pam
P.S Does anybody know where I can get a list of slum clearance dates etc for property namely 4 St Leonards Grove Hessle Road. It was a tiny terrace between Eastbourne St & Westbourne Street or has anyone come across a photo of this area. I know the carpet shop (Leightons?) was built across front where terrace used to be.

Many thanks

Hi Pam

Welcome to Rootschat.  Not sure why I'm not getting notifications of the threads I'm interested in.  Anyway, the Da Costa I am interested in finding is the mother of my g.grandfather George William Wright.  He was born in Bethnal Green sometime between 1855/65, but probably 1857/8.  I cannot find a birth for him or find him on any census until he turns up as the father of my gran who was born in 1884 in Hull.  My gran's mother was shown as being called Wright (she had previously been married and her married name and maiden name are also shown on the birth certificate.  After that George is with the family on the 1891, 1901 and 1911 census and on my g.gran's death cert, he calls himself "Widower".

I have no other info about him, apart from the fact that until after the 1901 census, he was a fisherman.  On the 1901 and subsequent census and until his death in 1935 he ran a shop on Hessle Road.

I know that George Wright's mother was apparently called Da Costa, but that is the only infor my aunt can (or will) give me.  This Da Costa lady was either Spanish or Portuguese.  If any of this rings a bell, I'd be delighted to learn more.

Hi

I'm new to the site and came across this thread, in particular the enquiry from Ybellygirl about Walter Dixon.  Ancestry have a Walter Dixon listed in the WW1 Service History section with around 17 images of his service record.  His address on signing up for the East Yorks Regt. is given as 6 Cromwell Street Hull and his next of kin is his sister Mrs Florence Williamson, Brigg Road, howsham, via Lincoln.  could this be your g. g. uncle?
