Title: help with maiden name and profession
Post by: wdermot on Wednesday 13 May 09 09:06 BST (UK)
Hi all, i just found a death certificate and can't read the name of the profession in the top left of the picture and the maiden name in the bottom right.

any suggestions?

His name was James Ferguson but i don't know his dob, from his age at death it would put it between 17/11/1809 and 17/11/1810, but i don't know where he was born either.

any help would be great thanks

Quarryworker looks sound.  And this is in Locharbriggs which is freestone quarrying area (my folks are here).  First thought for the m.s. was Willis - but I'll look again! Edit: Yep McGhie looks a strong match though an odd capital G.

What is the father's first name on this record?  Fingers are crossed for Robert as there are lots of Robert Ferg*on and Mary McGhie births in the appropriate area and time  ;)

Hi wdermot
You seem to have McGee in your list of names already, same family?

good find, yes the fathers name was robert ferguson, where did you find that information? it seems like a very good source!

unfortunately the McGee i've been looking for up to this point has been for a different branch of my tree, so fingers crossed I don't find that they're related, it's never good if the tree become a circle...

Scotlandspeople.

I went with Ladybird's assessment as McGhie looked quite good and I did birth searches for children between 1790 and 1854 with the surname ferg*s*n and a parent called m*cg*e.

There are, however, 2 sets of couples  :( a Robert Ferguson (various spellings) and an Ann McGhie in Dumfriesshire but there is also a Robert with a Mary McGhie same areas at the same time.

They aren't all in the same parish but within a reasonable distance - I have the same patterns of movement.

Robert & Mary
1796 John Ferguson in Terregles KKT
1798 Sarah Ferguson in Closeburn
1799 Elesabeth Fergeson in Keir
1802 John Ferguson in Tinwald
1808 John Ann Grier Fergusson (female) in Mouswald (same date as Mary)
1808 Mary Fergusson in Mouswald (same date as John Ann)

The Robert and Ann couple are in Kirkmahoe similar time period 1799-1814.

No James but given they moved so much he may have been baptised in a parish where the records are no more?

Do you have James in 1851?

So a little quandry.  You have Robert & Ann in Kirkmahoe having little uns.  And you have Robert & Mary all over the show but no Kirkmahoe.  James is from Kirkmahoe!

My experience of the Kirkmahoe records is that they are patchy.  So it is quite possible that Robert & MAry passed through but records are lost.  You need more evidence.

Not sure if you know the area but Kirkmahoe is really quite close to Dumfries.  My Thomsons are back and forth all the time between Locharbriggs and Kirkton (in Kirkmahoe parish).

wow, i'm a little over whelmed, i only expected someone to come up with a suggestion for a surname this is great. thank you very much for your help. is the list of the family from a census?
i managed to find james ferguson's wife Mary's birth certificate, registered in Kirkmahoe, but you're right enough that there isn't one around that time for James, tricky...

Yes, it is the 1851 census.  I've amended my post to make it clearer  ;D

The 1861 has the same birth place for James - Kirkmahoe

Hi Boongie Pam, well another day and another query, I think I've found Mary McGhie's birth certificate but I can't read what I presume is her father's name. Any suggestions?
many thanks

I should say that her dob is 21/02/1779 Dumfries

I know it's odd but the word looks like Governor to me!

The IGI transcribers obviously couldn't make head nor tail of it either, they just have the surname listed.

I think it looks like Corwener which is more likely to be his job (Cordwainer) than his first name  ???  ???
Hmmm tricky

How does SP transcribe it?

"The 1861 has the same birth place for James - Kirkmahoe"

Pam, did you notice the relationship change in the 1861 census.
