I've searched around the internet for coroners reports from Croydon of this date & it appears that they don't survive  :(  All is not lost though, you could try local papers of 1899 & the link below should be of some help,

Hi Jane
Many thanks for taking the trouble to look for me. I had hoped I would find something as my husband had found the inquest report from 1881 for an accident to an ancestor in Berkshire so I thought all inquest reports might be kept.

I will try to investigate the local papers as you suggest.
Thanks again

Talmage, try a Google search for 'coroners reports croydon' or something similar.  Most of what I found seemed to relate to the 20th c.  I'm sure the Croydon Local Studies Group will be able to give you a definite answer as to whether they exist.  The Surrey History Centre's online catalogue which is searchable seems to be having problems so I couldn't search there but you might have better luck.  If they do exist they should be at one of these places,

Hi Talmage,

One of my ancestors had an inquest into their death in Croydon and after enquiring about it with the local council, I was told that Inquest papers were not available.

I then contacted the "Local Studies Library" and a very kind lady had a look for me and she managed to find 2 newspaper articles that she copied and sent to me.

Dear Hazel
Thank you very much indeed for this information which I shall definitely follow up. Even if I can't find the inquest report a newspaper account would be great.

The accident happened to my grandfather's brother who died "following a fall from a cycle" in 1899. There was a family story that it happened during a cycle race and I want to try and find out if it is true.

Many thanks again for your help.

Hi, just thought I would add that Croydon Local Studies Group (Croydon Library) were extremely helpful in tracking an inquest for me (my date was 1906). I had been looking all over to find out what happened to a relative and they kindly sent me a photocopy from the newspaper. One idea may be to ask if they could scan and email to you as the photocopy wasn't too clear, but I at least managed to type it up. Good luck. :)
