Hi,
Could someone please lookup the parish register or Bishop Transcripts for Great and Little Clifton? I am trying to find the marriage of Joseph Miller and Margaret Shilton sometime after 1851. Their daughter Elizabeth was born 27 May 1855 at Bridgefoot, Cumberland.
On the 1851 census Margaret is living with her parents William Shilton and Margaret Murray at Clifton.
On the 1861 census Joseph Miller gives his birthplace as Gosforth in 1833 but he isn't listed there on the 1841 census. There is a Joseph Miller in Clifton in 1841: Ref: HO107/159/4, folio 6 page 22. Living with a Richard Miller, 65 Weaver, Jane do 25 and Joseph do 6. All born in county. Is this him? I can't move any further without his marriage to try and find a father's name.
I have searched the GRO marriages and can't find them - help......
I am really grateful for any help on this one.

Re the lad in Clifton: you will find his 1834 baptism there (illeg son of Jane) in the IGI.
You will also find a Joseph MILLER bap in Gosforth 1837, illeg son of Mary ... so it looks like two different lads.
1851, see Joseph MILLEN 13 Gosforth in Parton as nephew of KITCHENs.

It's true that there are no miller-shilton marriages listed on freebmd anywhere in the country between 51 and 61. Indeed the only Miller - Margaret marriage is listed in ulverstone and that is a Bewster. What is the exact listing in the 1861 census?

Morning Bob :)
1861
Joseph MILLER 30 Coal Miner, Gosforth
Margaret 25 Greysouthen
Elizabeth 5 Bridgefoot
On the 1851 census Margaret is living with her parents William Shilton and Margaret Murray at Clifton.
This is slightly misleading ... her mother appears in both 1841 and 1851 as Mary and was widowed by 1851.
The Joseph MILLER from Gosforth that I found seems to have married an Ellen and moved to Barrow in Furness - but I can't see him in 1861, only 1851, 71 and 81.

Hi GeoffE,
My apologies for giving the wrong info!!!! Margaret Shilton's father died in 1845 and her mother is Mary... She died in 1873.
My only hope is that for some reason it was missed off the GRO registers but that it is in the BT's or the Parish Register.
I've found a Margaret Miller death in 1870 in the district of Blackburn - will send for the certificate.
I can't find Joseph in 1871 or onwards. His daughter Elizabeth is a servant in the household of Joseph Robinson. RG10/5238 folio 71 pg 13.

There's also
Dec 1865
Margaret MILLER, Cockermouth 10b 337? (the middle digit is unclear but he page number should be between 319 and 348)
Do you have Elizabeth's birth certificate? What was Joseph's Occupation?

Geoff, you know I do a bit for freebmd so without checking the parameters I would have transcribed that as 357 but the official transcriber put 387! Definitely not a 2 or 4 tho'.

Yes, I would have said 357 but when you click on "Info" if tells you the limits of page numbers.

I'll put in a check then. We can do it internally. Thanks.

Hi Geoff,
On Elizabeth's birth certificate Joseph's occupation is 'Coal Miner'.
The Margaret Miller death you found is a definite possibility. I have sent for the other one so will see what that turns up and if not right will order the other one.
Which ever Margaret is the right one it is more than likely that Joseph married again.
There are two death registrations for a Joseph Miller
a. Joseph Miller b. 1831 d. Dec 1/4 1888 57 yrs Whitehaven 10b pg371. or
b. Joseph Miller b. c 1832 d. Sept 1/4 1881 49 yrs Wigton 10b pg293.
His death cert won't lead me back to his parents though.
