Post by: dutchman on Thursday 07 May 09 15:38 BST (UK)
Im looking for information re the RGA stationed at seaforth liverpool.  Especially a Gunner Antingham who was married to a Rose Green. The barracks has now gone and with it any history of the regiment.

Very interesting thank you. A little after William Antinghams time .  He died at the Garrison in 1903 after being in the regiment since he was 17. He had travelled to India and various parts of England and died in the arms of his 17 soldier son. Hope to track down his grave, tried on line but need to visit Liverpools archives.

If you have the death certificate it will give the place of death and of the informant, which should give clues about the likely place of burial.  What religion was he?  That would have a bearing as there are local public and RC cemeteries as well as CofE churchyards.  A local newspaper might have an announcement or report of his death.  Crosby library (not in Liverpool but adjacent) are helpful.

Have tried Anfield, Bootle ,litherland ,toxteth ,everton, kirkdale, west derby ,and Allerton.  Including some churches now lost through the war or neglect.  His wife lived in Falconer Street and I used this as a central point.  Did the army have a military
Cemetery?  I tried various religions, his granddaughters were married in
the Wesleyan Chapel, Wilson Street Litherland. Cannot find his wifes  grave either, she died in Falconer Street.

You have not mentioned Anfield Cemetery - it's very large and some inscriptions have been put online.  Its records are at Liverpool RO.
On a different tack, could your man have been buried at his family's home town?

The Royal Garrison Artillery depot was in Seaforth Barracks, Liverpool, having moved there from an earlier location at St Domingo’s House in Everton.

He was born Church Of England December Quarter 1851 in Docking Union Norfolk under William Anlingham on GRO site  not Antingham as shown on Ancestry site Vol 13 page 63 Mother's Maiden Name = Moore i.e. Margaret Moore
he was named after his Brother William born August 1848 (September Quarter) 1848 Docking Union Vol 13 page 59 Mother's Maiden Name = Moore
Baptised CofE 27 August 1848 in Rudham but died a few weeks later December Quarter 1848 Docking Union Vol 13 page 37 buried 8 October 1848

William Enlisted as Gunner 1532 into the RGA at Norwich on 13 January 1871
Went to India 17 January 1872 for 4 years 357 days till 8 January 1877
Married 20 September 1879 Rose Green in Exeter

He died at Seaforth Barracks aged 51 on 24 March 1903 West Derby March Quarter 1903 Vol 8b page 197

But that doesn't mean he is buried in Liverpool
It was not his Home, never was.
Most likely he returned was taken back to the Family Home and his Place of Birth in Norfolk where all the other Antingham Family members are buried.

Having said that his Wife in 1911 is living with her Daughter's Family the Sims at 5 Falconer Street Bootle

His Children made Liverpool their home.

Find their Burials and they may be in Dad's plot.
