Hello all, I am anxious to know if anyone can tell me what James Vickress's (who died Dec 1852, either Shoreditch 1c 147 or 149) death certificate says regarding his age or origin, and whether there is any mention of his relatives. I would like to know if he is the same James Vickress who was born in 1809 in St Anne Soho, London, to whom I am probably very distantly related.
Many thanks!

The only way to find out what he died of is to purchase the relevant death certificate, it should give you his age, where he died and who registered the birth, if he was a widow it might be nearest next of kin if he had any, OR a superintendant of a hospital

There does not appear to be a James Vicress on 1851, but a Thomas James aged 5

Hi cimbrio
this webpage will tell you the sort of information you will find on an English death certificate of circa 1852.
http://home.clara.net/dixons/Certificates/deaths.htm
This family was living in the East End of London on the 1841 census -son John baptised in Bethnal Green.
1841 census HO107 693/5 folio 48
Bethnal Green
James Vickress 50 Comb maker
William Vickress 20 Comb maker
James Vickress 13 Comb maker
John Vickress 9 Comb maker
Ann Vickress 47 Comb maker
all born Middlesex
Son William was married in Shoreditch on the 1851 census. Son James was in Bethnal Green, though his daughter's death was registered in Shoreditch in 1861.
The only way to know for sure whether it is James senior is to purchase the death certificate. The death registration in 1852 is the only death registration for a James Vickress in Middlesex between 1841 and 1852.

Did you every find info on this James Vickress,, I just ordered the death cert last week in the hope it would confirm his age at death and match back to 1790 approx. He is my gggggrandfather.
If not I will have the cert in a few weeks. I now have every Vickress who ever lived on my tree. The only birth record i could find is a James Vickers. ::)
-
The most remote Vickress ancestor I was able to find was William Vickress, born in 1787 in Hope under Dinmore, son of William Vickress and Mary Williams; William Sr was from (I think) Wellington, a village near Hope. Do you think your James Vickress was a native of London, or rather he came from another county? It's possible he came from Herefordshire, isn't it? Have you any idea where he came from, roughly?
-
Okay all you bright genealogists, let's see if you can figure this out, or point me in the right direction. James Vickress is my oldest realive that I have been able to trace. Then the Vickress name goes dead. My callenge is that I can't find his birth. He was married to Ann Hulseberg in 1815 and is listed in the 1841 census (age 50) as per below and in the 1851 census (age 56). He dies in 1852 (age 62) as I have his death vert and that is the man. On the 1851 census it reports he is born in Middlesex, and I assume this means London
So my assumptoin is that he is born in London between 1790 - 1795. No such birth can be found. So my assumption is that the name must be variant like Vickers. I found 2 James Vickers, one born 1878 and batprised in `1795 and another born 1793. Further corss check proved that are not my man.
So I am stumpted. Can anyone offer suggestion on what to try next?

James Vickress bapt 1809 St Anns Soho, parents were Edward and Maria Charlotte.
Edward is buried Finsbury St Luke 27/08/1835 aged 60
Maria Charlotte buried 18/11/1857 aged 80 Nunhead cemetery
It would appear that Edward and Maria had another son, Thomas bapt 1811 St Ann's Soho
There is another bapt William at St Botolph Aldgate 11/10/1807 having been born 18/08/1807, address given Somerset St.
This doesn't bring you much nearer your man. I do realise that baptisms usually happen within a few weeks of a birth way back when but sometimes they aren't as I have found in the past, 1809, well I don't know?, also I have been told, don't know how true it is that wedding couple's had to be baptised to get married, once again I don't know for sure.
I think you will only find your man through a baptism as registration didn't start till about July 1837
Have you got any witnesses on his marriage in 1815?

Tha James Vickress you mention is another guy, but not relarted to me. But Vickress is so rare my tree record every persopn worldwide who ever used the name.
The witnesses on the 1815 marriage between James Vickress and Ann Hulseburg at Simon and Elizabeth Morris. I do not know who they are. How can we leverage this?

Well I am as stumped as you are, he is obviously there somewhere under another variation on his surname
Witnesses names no help
Happy hunting

Hi
On the 1851 census it reports he is born in Middlesex, and I assume this means London
The first suggestion is to never assume.
Being born in the county of Middlesex meant just that. In 1851 London consisted of what is now known as the square mile of the City of London. London has spread out since then. By 1889 officially it swallowed up surrounding areas of the counties of Middlesex (which surrounded the city on 3 sides and across the river Thames to its south areas of the county of Surrey and Kent) and became the county of London. In 1965 it swallowed the rest of Middlesex, a larger part of Surrey and parts of the county of Essex and to a far lessere extent Hertfordshire to become Greater London.
This map of the counties of England will allow you to centre down on Middlesex (and the small densley built up area of the City of London in 1851 so you can see Middlesex and all the parishes it comprised of.
http://maps.familysearch.org/
P H Reaney 'A Dictionary of Surnames'
Gives the origins of Vickress with Vicarage, Vickerage and Vickridge 'servant of the vicary' giving an early example as Hugh Vicaries 1332.
Where have you found James on the 1851 census?
On the 1841 census adult ages, those over 15, usually had their age rounded down to the nearest 5. The answer yes to born in county on that census can be unreliable.
As you have 'every Vickress recorded on your tree' who was
Burial
31st October 1836 St Leonard Shoreditch
Benjamin Vickress aged 60 Workhouse
as he was living close to James

I also found that death record and I keep it along with a bunch of misc. records that do not match any other record. So my assumption to date is this is mispelt and should be Vickers.
Perhaps that's a possible father,,, good thought.
As for the 1851 its on the page before his son james Vickress (spelt correctly). My his father is recorded as James Vichughe (at least on ancestry)
Gotta run,,,

At your suggestion I relooked at Benjamin Vickress who died close to James Vickress in 1836. He died in the workhouse. So my assumption is that he would not related to my folks living close or he would be living with them. Is that a valid assumption? I can find no links to Benajmin Vickress and my family.
Thanks,

Hi
Workhouse infirmaries acted in some respects as local hospitals. As the century worn on they developed and by the time of the start of the National Health system in 1948 many became national health hospitals.

There is an entry on FamilySearch for a James Vickers (sic), born 26 Feb 1787, and baptised 8 years later on 19 March 1795 in St. Leonard's, Shoreditch (in Middlesex), the son of Nathaniel and Elizabeth.
A possible brother called Augustus Emanuel Vickers (sic) was baptised at Saint Anne's Soho, in Westminster. DoB is 12 February 1801, baptised 29 March 1801.
If the surname Vickers is a corruption of Vickress (or vice versa) it certainly seem either variation was used consistently throughout the years by the various individuals. The first candidate, however, seems a likely candidate to be the same James Vickress who died in 1852 unless another alternative can be found.

Nice to hear from you and I trust your search is going well. Please post those new Vickress Hereford documents to the Vickress web site or email them to me.
The James Vickress born in 1787 and baptized in 1795 is not my guy. I thought he was but other evidence supplied by others proved that to my satisfaction. Hence I am still stumped on how to get by this roadblock. Any suggestions would be appreciated as I have given up on this for now.
On my mothers side I am back to before 1066 into France with some proof. Church records back to 1600 approx., then books, land records, visitation books, and documented family trees. Mom at least came from money and some minor titleage. It seems incredible and who knows if it true. I am sure that those writing these family trees always wanted to confirm their roots to the King. But for now I believe I am related to King Henry I. Is that cool or what. Evidence is posted to the Vickress web site.
