Title: Help! Anybody fancy a challenge?
Post by: DavidGreenall110 on Wednesday 06 May 09 15:19 BST (UK)
OK, I've given up for now but how does somebody fancy a challenge?

I've been trying in vain to find any record or mentions of my GGG Grandparents Charles and Diana Death. Some of you may have seen my previous post regarding this subject and a big thanks to those that have tried to help.

A spanner has been thrown in the works that has sent me into a tailspin, because there is no birth certificate for my GG Grandfather I ordered one of his brothers which give the parents as Charles Death a Boot and Shoe Maker in Norwich and Diana Smith (an easy name to trace!!!). However, I then found a Baptism record for my GG Grandfather which gave the same information on the Father but for the mother it just said "France".

There is no marriage or birth records that I can find for Chas and Di, the census records don't help either as Diana is spelt many ways and she never appears with Charles and to add to all that, she is from that well known town of "NK" Not Known although it does suggest Oxfordshire!

There's always been talk in the family that said the name was French as in De Ath (of Ath) in what is now Belgium.

Is there anybody that can shed some light on this?

David  ??? ??? ???

Hi David

You haven't mentioned any dates.  Please could you provide a link to any previous threads so that Rootschatters can see what is already known about this family?

I see you have been unable to find Josephs birth rego. abt 1847, Norwich, Norfolk.

There is this curious one;
Joseph DEATH
June 1848
Cosford
12 338

Click on the name Cosford and you will see there is a problem with it.

We have Diana and children 1851 Census and think this is possibly Charles/Diana 1841 :)

1841 Census                      HO107/1036/16/Rattlesden

Rattlesden, Suffolk

Elizabeth DEATH, 55, widow
Diana, 30
Charles, 25, butcher
Robert, 20, butcher         al born in county

Trish

EDIT this appears to be wrong as there is a baptism for this Diana  ( submitted) to parents Francis/Frank  DEATH and Elizabeth GOOCH.

THESE STILL COULD BE CHARLES parents.

Too late for me/off to bed,

cheers,
trish

Trish,

Page number is transcribed incorrectly, should be 358 which fits in the expected range.

Thanks Trish, Gaie and Anna,

Joseph was born 8th April 1847 in Norwich, I have no idea when Charles was born, the 1851 census gives Dianas year of birth as 1813.

Charles could be part of the Rattlesden Death's but I can't be 100% sure on that, Diana's name is spelt in different ways on the 1851 and 1871 censuses Diana and Dinah. I don't have the references unfortunately.

An Update,

Visited the Norfolk Records Office on Wednesday on my way home from holiday. Had a quick look at the Baptism Records for Norwich in 1847, Joseph Deaths Baptism was on 20th June as previously thought but, looking at it closely the mothers name has been mistranscribed as "France" when it should be "Diana", so that clears up that anomoly from the original post at the top.

Had a brief look for marriages for Charles Death and Diana Smith 1829 - 1833 but there's too many churches in Ipswich and I only had half an hour.

 :(

My mother knew a Gerry Death in Manitoba. The family pronounced their name "Deeth".

Hi from Canada,

A very unusual name but as 'chinakay' said it is usually pronounced 'Deeth' & I can understand why. I know of a fellow who graduated from the University of Toronto Medical School some time ago. Can you imagine being known as "Doctor Death"? He would probably have very few patients. Reminds me of the Nazi Mengele.

The Edwardstone, Suffolk Deaths are linked to my Yeowells.  There's a few others also researching this branch, including someone here on RootsChat.  Peter DeAth (another researcher) is also related to them.

I am fairly sure you maybe distantly related to this Suffolk family too.

Alas, I cannot help you any further.

Hi guys

This lot are ancestors of my wife's family. The father Francis Death was a butcher, as we're two of his sons Charles & Robert, their sister Diana was an in keeper I'm told. Their brother Gerorge Gooch Death is my wifes GGGG grandfather. Their mother was Elizabeth Gooch. A lot of them emigrated to New Zealand.

Regards
Andy
