Hi, Could someone see if there's any sign in the 1841/51 of
George Sidney READ b.1824 Salisbury WILTS....
I know he was educated at Queen's College Oxford so he could well be there in 1841.
Many thanks

There is a George Read in WEST TISBURY SALISBURY on both 1841/51
Could it be him?
1851 married to a .....Matilda
with children... AGNES 8 and EDWIN 4
-
No, that's not him - my George didn't marry until he was 56 in 1882.

On second thoughts, he doesn't look likely, gougy, is your man the George Sidney Read in 1861 census, Practising Barrister, living with sister Mary?

Hi Ecneps and Gougy,

Hi, yes he's the practising barrister in 1861 with sister Mary in Salisbury. I have his family living in The Close, Salisbury in 1841 and in Kensington, London in 1851. Information I've found indicates he passed his "matric. June 10th 1841 aged 16 " whatever that is, then "Bridgman Exhib." again I've no idea what that was either, and gained his M.A. in 1843 at Queen's College Oxford.

He's proving very elusive! Have searched under all possible variations, I wonder if he went abroad to complete his studies or to travel before settling down to practise law.
The 'Bridgman exhib' may refer to the Salem artist and illustrator Lewis Jesse Bridgman (1857-1931) (that's Salem, USA not Wilts!)
