I am trying to find the emigration, date, ship etc for George Beard.
The following is all I know about my 2 x G/Grandfather.
He married Catherine Ashman nee Pamplin in Bundarra NSW on 1 Feb 1859. Have MC. Have all Catherine's info.
He died 18 Aug 1876 Wandsworth NSW. It says born in England in Aust 20 yrs but was reg. not by family. Gives age as 47 yrs. Father's name is given as George Beard mother UK
From his daughter Elizabeth's birth certificate 26 Apr 1866 George states that he is 35 yrs and born in Gloucestershire and 30yrs at marriage.
He was a master blacksmith.
The only george Beard that I can find is 19 yrs old and arrived in Sydney/Newcastle in 1855 on the Constitution.
I wonder if someone else with fresh eyes can find another George Beard for me.

May I ask if you have ruled this arrival out as your George.
Don't forget a lot of ages were "guesstimates" and often people filling out death information may have only had a rough idea on time frames
kind thoughts Jenn

Thanks Jen for your reply ;D
I haven't ruled the 19 yr old G Beard out but thought I would see if there was another one that I've missed :-\
G B himself was the informant on his daughter's BC in 1866 & stated he was 35yrs & wife Catherine was 41yrs.

Checking Assisted Immigrants to NSW it seems that the George Beard age 19 who arrived on the Constitution came from Greatcotham?, Essex. I think this should read Great Totham because I have found him in the 1851 census with father John at Great Totham. His occupation is Ag Lab.
Maybe you can rule out this one as your George Beard

Thank you so much cazay for finding that out ;D
I had a gut feeling that he wasn't the right GB.
You can't see another GB can you??

Hello Joy
as you have his marriage certifcate does it give you where in Gloucestershire he was from, or his mothers names? I know some of the early ones didn't though.
If we can find him on a census or more we can get a more accurate time fram to search for his arrival

Hi Jen ;D Absolutely no helpful information on the MC
George himself registered his daughter Elizabeth in 1866
and just stated that he was from Gloucestershire.
I'm running out of ideas for finding his DOB and POB & mother's m/s and christian name.
Thanks for your interest Jen

I see he has a headstone in place, I wonder if his son's birth certificate might reveal more?
I see his wife and son died 2 days apart how sad.

I'll have a look for the BC of GB jnr - I'm almost positive that I have it.
I have had this file put away as I've been concentrating on my Scottish
side [much easier]. I have photographs of the graves and went over the headstones
very carefully in case there was something the photos missed but no luck.
I'm off today for a couple of days break so will report back when I return.
Thank you so much for your interest, Cazay, Jen, Cando and trish1120, in my brick wall.

Hi Everyone
At last the update ;)
I purchased GB's probate only to discover that he died intestate and the probate was an application from creditors in Sydney to administer the estate.
Ordered another birth cert for GB jnr and all it told me was that GB snr was 32 at that time(1861) and that he gave his wife's name as her mother's maiden name. Already have all of Catherine Beard latterly Ashman formerly Pamplin's information.
Cazay found a likely family for me in the 1851 census in Sth Wootten(sp?) which comprised:- George Beard blacksmith 45 b somerset Pilton
Jemima do 43 b wilts Kingswood
george do 22 do do
Mary do 16 Somerset Wootten
Kezia do 5 do do
Abraham Hutchens 14 blacksmith b Kent Sheerness
See next message
Edit to correct Cazay's name

Cont....
1851 is the last census that George Jnr appears in, unable to find him in '61, '71 etc.
Now I believe that the boundaries changed in the 1850's sometime and the Wiltshire entries
became part of Gloucestershire.
Purely circumstantial but my GB called his eldest daughter Jemima and his second daughter Elizabeth (closest to George Jnr in age in'51).
So I wonder what are the chances of this being my GB ??? GB Jnr was 22 in '51 and my GB was 32 in 1861 at the birth of his son.
I still am unable to locate his arrival in Australia. I looked up the GB that arrived on the Constitution aged 19 but defintely not him.
The only other GB that I can locate came out as crew on the Lady Hodgkinson in 1857 departed London.
So that's where things stand at the moment.....what does everyone think......and where do I go from here :'(
All help very much appreciated.

Hi Again;
Excellent progress thanks to Census Cazay found and your extra work on this.
George Beard age 28 was of Wilts according to the Lady Hodgkinson Passenger List. Ordinary Seaman.
That and the 1841/1851 Census and children George called Jemima and Elizabeth in Australia, seem pretty conclusive to me.
FreeREG has this extracted record, probably George Snr;
George BEARD, Baptised 25 November 1804, St John the Baptist, Pilton, Somerset
Parents, GEORGE and BETTEY
And this is Marys from FreeREG ;)
Mary Wallington BEARD, Baptised 04 May 1834 , St Peters, North Wootton, Somerset .
Parents, GEORGE and JEMIMA
Abode, N Wootton
Father, Blacksmith
Others you can check on FreeREG;
William Tilly BEARD, 17 June 1832 ( May have died as 1841 has a Wiiliam age 3)
Elizabeth White BEARD, 15 May 1826
-
Birth/Christening;
From IGI, Extracted;
Sarah Ann BEARD,
Birth, 16 February 1820
Christened, 23 May 1830, Independant, Kingswood, Wiltshire
Parents, George BEARD and Jemima TILLEY
Possible for Jemima;
Jemima TILLEY, Christened 10 August 1808, The Tabernacle Calvanistic Methodist, Wotton under Edge, Gloucester, England
Parents WILLIAM and MARY

Thanks Trish....I'm feeling quite good about it all but didn't want to get too
excited in case it was my wishful thinking.
Thanks for the other details of the family - I've made contact with another researcher
in England whose line is the Tilley's and she can't find GeorgeJnr on any of the other census'
either. What I have found out is that Jemima Tilley's sister married a Cooke and they emigrated to SA in 1856 so I thought that perhaps George came out with his Aunt & Uncle but I haven't found ships into SA so haven't checked that angle.
Thanks Trish again, I appreciate your help and the fact that you've told me what I wanted to hear ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

sorry if I repeat myself
but did the death certificate say how long in the colonies?
there is an arrival into Victoria for a George Berd??
kind thoughts Jenn
-
Death Cert ;
Father, George
Died August 1876 age 47 , so born c 1829
Time in Australia, 20 years, so arrived c 1856
The Lady Hodgkinson arrived Syney NSW 30 March 1857.
On board was;
George BEARD, age 28, Ordinary Seaman, born Wilts, Crew ( born c 1829)
http://mariners.records.nsw.gov.au/1857/03/066lad.htm
I can find the Beard Family 1841/1851 but George Snr has died by 1871 Census as Jemima is living with her daughter Kezia, now married to George VINCENT.
Jemima now says she was born Kingswood, Gloustershire.
So Glous/Wilts may have changed borders as said earlier.
Her death appears to be reg 1871, Wells, Somerset.
It is all circumstantial but George naming his daughter Jemima in Australia seems the clincher to me.
Plus George Jnr was a Blacksmith.

Thanks Trish for answering Jenn ;)
Sorry Jenn that I missed your query re the length of time in the colony.
Where did you find the George Berd arriving in Vic?
I have no idea what kind of an accent GB would have had but perhaps
Beard could sound like Berd ???
Jenn, don't you agree that the family as outlined in the 1851 is likely ???
Oh dear, if only wishing could make it so ;D

Oh yes I would definately agree, I was just looking further afield for the an arrival
thanks Jenn

Looking for more information on Catherine Ashman. She was my husbands great great grandmother and lived in the Armidale district.
Jenny ::)
-
Welcome to Rootschat Jenny ;D
Well now, Catherine Ashman's maiden name was Pamplin. she was born in Bottisham
Cambridegeshire in c1826 and her parents were Richard Pamplin and Ann Randal. Catherine married Thomas Ashman in c1849 and in 1858/9 emigrated to Australia with Thomas and their daughters Amy and Mary Ann on the ship 'Regina'. (I don't have my notes to hand at the moment).
thomas died in early 1859 outside Glen Innes and on the 1 Dec 1859 Catherine married George Beard in Bundarra NSW.
I'm Catherine's GG/Granddaughter from her second marriage.
What else do you wish to know?
If you ask me specific questions I'll be more able to help you. Your husband and I would be 3rd
cousins but only through Catherine.
Joy :) :)

Thanks for all the information and for replying so soon. I am relatively new to ancestry searching and am only just finding out about a lot of our ancestors. My husband descended from Jemima Beard. She married Edward Court (second marriage) and and my husbands grandmother was Mona Court. I am still searching for details on them. Are you from the same family? In May we are going to Armidale to try and find out more from the historical society. I was told Edward Court disappeared and Jemima re married. Would appreciate any other info you may have on these family members.
Jenny Haydon :)
