I am a novice at genealogy and need help in finding information about my ancestors. My paternal grandparents Patrick O'Connor (or Connor) and Catherine (Mager or perhaps Maher) were both born in Ireland. Patrick was in Darlington at the time of 1871-1891 censuses. Since his first child, Alice, was born in about 1859 in Darlington, I assume the family was also in Darlington for the 1861 census as well. My further assumption is that he was married in the 1855-9 timeframe. However, I do not have a specific marriage date or place. Neither do I know his specific date and place of birth in Ireland, Nor do I have certain knowledge of his wife, Catherine's maiden name or her specific date and place of birth in Ireland. I seem to be at a dead end and would appreciate any suggestions. Thank you. ???

Hi,
Too bad you haven't got any reply yet, but maybe you want to review your original message. I, for one, couldn't follow it.
You start the message talking about a Patrick and Catherine, then suddenly we learn that George died in 1857. Who is he, and what is his link to P and C? You then say that he was in Darlington in the 1871-91 censuses, but how can this be if he died in 1857?

Hi evansnt
First let me welcome you to Rootschat. I have to agree with Tim your posting was a little hard to understand.
My suggestion to you, if you haven't already done so, is obtain one of Patrick & Catherine's childrens birth certificates this will help ascertain Catherine's maiden name.
I note that on the 1901 census
Patrick O'Connor is in charge of a Boarding House in West Hartlepool. Couldn"t make out the full address but looks like 16 M......th Terrace, Russell's Hotel Godfrey House.
Living with him and his wife Catherine are 2 of his daughters Catherine & Rose also staying is a niece Teresa Robinson aged 28. His or her side?
In case you want to obtain a birth certificate, found the following:-
Rose Ann Connor Born DEC QTR 1881 Darlington Vol:10a Page: 24
To find any information from the 1861 & 1851 census, I would suggest you put in a lookup request on the County board. Putting in as much information as you can ie. the 1871 census including the address.
Good luck in your quest.

Hi,
Sorry for butting in - Russell's Hotel was on Mainsforth Terrace once known as Stranton, now part of West Hartlepool.

Is this the family in 1861?

The writing's awful, and I can't make out Catherine's relation to Alice Magee - any takers?

Hi Rambler,
Ancestry have Patrick and Catherine's relationship transcribed as 'Ulative'...
I would say she was 'daur', so daughter of Alice Magee. Also, Alice's place of birth looks like 'Ireland Grocee'. Or something like that!

I was tempted to read it as "daughter", but it really is a scribble - glad someone else thinks so too. "Magee" is pretty similar to "Mager", especially in bad handwriting... ::)
Yes - there's certainly another word as well as "Ireland", but I wasn't at all sure what it said, and didn't believe A****'s transcription. How about Tyrone?
