Title: Muirheads in the Denny Cemetery
Post by: tomanst on Wednesday 29 April 09 00:51 BST (UK)
Hello everyone. I have a copy of a letter my great grandmother Catherine Muirhead who wrote to my grandfather in 1926. Her parents were David Muirhead(DOD 21/4/1875) and Elizabeth Connal(DOD 3/6/1851). I am wondering if a stone exists there for them in the (Denny Churchyard Denny WP) as refered in the letter. Also in the letter was this note---"Brother Alexander Funeral was to Denny Cemetery( that is Maggie father) Maggie and I was at his grave after we came back. A very bonny spote and so well looked after"

I have found no information on him at all. Can someone help me out on that please? Catherine was the youngest of 13. The last 4 were born in Redhill ( Jean, Mary, Robert, and of course Catherine).

Also her father was born at the Durm Farm P of St Ninianes. I have not idea where this is or what it means. I am living in New Westminster, British Columbia, Canada so it is quite difficult to hop over the fence for a look. Thank you so much.---Tom

Hi Tom,
I can't help with the farm at St Ninians.  However, every legible stone at Denny cemetery has been photographed and transcribed.
For a fee (5GBP), you can obtain a full set of photos and transcription.

See this thread.

According to Ancestry's version of the 1851 & 1861 Census, this looks like the family:

Residing at Teth Fauld?, Denny

David Muirhead, age 30, Agricultural Labourer, born St. Ninians
Elisabeth Muirhead age 47
Jean Muirhead age 7
Mary Muirhead age 5
Robert Muirhead age 3
Catherine Muirhead age 1

1861 Census

Residing at Tethfauld, Denny

David Muirhead, age 60??, Agricultural Labourer, born St. Ninians
Mary Muirhead age 16
Catherine Muirhead age 10

Can't find David in 1871?

Hi Tom
I have just registered and if you come back to this question I would like to chat a few specifics with you and what you have already found out. I have access to OPRs in Stirling Library but I don't have as much time as I would like; hence hoping to save time.
I'd like to know more details of the head of the family, David as I can't find reliable information about him or his wife Elizabeth.
The Catherine  born at Denny had an much older sister called Margaret whose illegitemate son was brought up with Catherine and her siblings so David was the only father figure in his life. When Catherine's older brother Robert married he went as a tennant to a farm in Kippen Parish, Stirlingshire. His nephew, previously mentioned illegitemate son of his older sister, was almost the same age and when he married he became tennant of the neighbouring farm. He is my great grandfather. Most of this is gleaned from cencus material and my mother's confirmation-"that explains a lot"
I'd also like information on Margaret if you have any.
I'm a bit nervous of this public forum and naturally I'm trying to be selective in details of christian names, location etc. People here are still shocked by revelations of illigitemate birth.        Mary

Not sure if this is at all relevant but I have Muirheads from St Ninian's in my family tree. John Muirhead, born 1635 married a Janet Thomson. Their daughter Janet Muirhead born 1661 married a James Waters.

Hi Somervil (I don't know your name)

How on earth did you get so far back!

There are so many Muirheads in Stirlingshire. My branch seemed to have settled in the hills around Dundaff Hill, Carronbridge in the huge parish of St Ninians.

The Denny connection was about 1840-1875 in a smallholding called Redhill. After that mosr emmigrated and a few stayed on at the edge of the Carse of Stirling.

Going further back than 1790 is just full of guesswork. If you can give any information on John Muirhead and Janet Adam who started a family in 1793 with Alexander, then I'd be grateful for the help.

You can send a personal message if you wish.

Cheers
Mary

Hi Mary

A bit more background on Muirheads - John Muirhead b1635 was my g9 grandfather and his daughter Janet my g8 grandmother. Janet married a James Waters about 1680 in St Ninian's and they had a daughter Janet Waters b in Tillicoultry, Clackmannon. Janet Waters married a William Love in Scoonie in 1729. Their son Henry married a Rachel Simpson in Larbert in 1756. I am related to two of their children, Janet and James. But through another child of theirs, David Love, they have a line of the family who became mormons and went to live in Salt Lake City. I got most of my information from the LDS website and the information may be quite detailed there because of the  Mormon connection. I'm sorry I can't be more helpful about the John Muirhead and Janet Adam you asked about but it may be worth checking the LDS website if you haven't done so already. Good luck. Laura

Hi Laura,

Henry Love and Rachel Simpson had at least 12 children - my interest is in their daughter Elizabeth born 1765 in Larbert.  I'd be interested in knowing whether or not you have any information on Elizabeth.

Regards,
Lenagh

Hi Lenagh
The only informion I have on Elizabeth Love is that she was born in Larbert, Stirlingshire on 20/01/1765. She married a David Dalyrymple (probably around 1783 looking at the birth dates of her children). She had at least three children; Rachel born 29/02/1784 in Polmont, Stirlingshire, Janet born 5/02/1786 in Tranent, East Lothian and Thomas born 16/09/1787 in Caronock, Fife. I think the likelihood is that she had more than this as you would expect to see a David, Henry and Elizabeth among the names.
good luck. Laura

Hi Laura,

Thanks for your reply.  :)

There is an extracted MC on IGI for a David Dalrumple and Elizabeth Love married in Larbert on 15 Jan 1780, it's probably the couple you refer to.  I also see the three Dalrymple children you refer to.  This isn't the couple I'm looking for although Henry Love and Rachel Simpson's first child was also named Elizabath (spelt with an "a") who was born in Larbert on 2 Jan 1757.  I assumed she died before my Elizabeth was born, but possibly not, or could be a relative...who knows?

The Elizabeth I have was born in Larbert on 20 Jan 1765 and married a Peter Allan in Polmont.  They have nine children that I found on SP who tie in very nicely with the Scottish naming pattern for Henry and Rachel.  I was hoping to find Peter Allan's parents and children to make sure I had the correct families.

The hunt goes on.  ;)

Regards,
Lenagh

Hello Mary,

New to this, the name CONNAL/CONAL/ CONNEL, which I saw you mention
in Stirling and Kippen . Was this a common name in the late 1700's/1800's or only specific to this area
Im chasing this name in combination with WHITEHEAD/MONTEATH/ RONALD

Hi Gerry

Thanks for your interest. All I can tell you is that another Rootschatter elsewhere on this site found out for me that the Muirhead wife, Elizabeth Connel, was born in Blantyre, Lanarkshire, daughter of a millar.
 See link
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?action=printpage;topic=398873.0

She and her sister Margaret ended up in St Ninians Parish working in one of the big houses. Margaret married another farmer called Robert Low. These marriages would be 1825ish though I can't find a record.

In the searching I did find others of that surname in St Ninians Parish also as well as Gargunnock, both Stirlingshire. There were one or two in Clackmannanshire. All in all not terribly common.

The spelling is usually Connel though sometimes written Connal.

Hope you find some leads.  ;)

Mary
