Is there someone who can help me with finding the birth and or christening of
John WILLIAMSON b c1783 Durham, England please.
He married 1817 in Yorkshire and John, an Agricultural Labourer, died 1853 in Yorkshire aged 70 years.
In 1841 Census he said No to being born Yorkshire, and in the 1851 Census he gave his birth place as Ireton Durham, which may possibly be Ryton?
Thanks to Pat's lookup for me I know there is no John listed in Ryton around that time frame, and it has been suggested he may have been registered elsewhere.

Durham Records Online has a baptism for John Williamson in Lanchester born 26 Dec 1782 bap 19 Jan 1783 at Pontop RC church (John Williamson of Iveston son of William Williamson (catholic) and his wife Mary Taylor (protestant) :)

That could very well be the 'Ireton' referred to jennyalogy's posting.
Was this place-name taken from a transcript or from the original image?

Not sure if Durham Records Online do their own transcriptions or not but some of their records are from BTs and others from Parish Regs. This one matched so closely that I thought it worth a look at at least.

Sorry, angelfish, I didn't phrase that well. I meant was the 'Ireton' which Jennyalogy referred to taken from a transcript or the original 1851 census image? (I haven't got access to the 1851 to check it)
Durham Records Online's transcriptions are usually very reliable.
I have seen Iveston transcribed in many different ways - once in the 1881 census as Justone on account of the fancy copperplate 'I' at the start of the word.

Had a look at the image and it does look like Ireton. Had a look at the map, in 1851 John was in Wykeham between Pickering and Scarborough and nearby is Irton, I wonder if that might've caused confusion at some point?

I would have a look at Murton Co Durham if I were you sometimes Irton on the 1841 census

Thank you for your input and help with my search for John Williamson {hardly the rarest name to be searching}, I sincerely appreciate it.
And thanks very much for looking up and supplying the details for John of Iveston, he's so close to a match that he's certainly well worth considering.
When I saw the 1851 I had entertained the place in Yorkshire called Irton as being John's birthplace, but upon finding him in the 1841, "N" was beside his name in answer to the question of born in the County.
I've been told that some events for Irton are also registered in Gateshead, and there is a John christened there 24 June 1787 [Father: Jno] which isn't too far off John's approximate dob {though not as close as John of Iveston}.
Is there someone who has access to Gateshead Registers and who could look this record up please? - to see if there's any extran information - or should I begin a new topic?

So far as I'm aware there isn't any place called 'Irton' in Gateshead.
The baptism you mention in 1878 is taken from the IGI (extracted record).
Gateshead baptisms can be found on the Durham Bishops Transcripts at http://search.labs.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#p=collectionDetails;c=1309819;t=browsable;w=0
Select Durham, then Gateshead, then the appropriate date range. They are not searchable by name, so you have to go through page by page. I've had a quick look, and, unless they are out of order, the records for 1878 aren't there >:( But it would repay you to double check.
However, all the other records simply give the childs name and the father's name, so aren't particularly illuminating.

My mistake I'm sorry, I should have written Ryton- I've been told some Ryton and Whickham events were also registered at Gateshead.
The baptism in Gateshead was 24 June 1787.
I didn't get to access the site you mention as I couldn't update to Adobe 10, perhaps because I'm on dialup.
I thought the Parish Register may have had extra information.
