Title: Changing Babies Names!
Post by: jourdmart on Monday 27 April 09 14:42 BST (UK)
I have come accross something slightly odd! ???

On the 1901 census I have an Edith A Rodger who was just 4 days old at the time of the census.
On the 1911 census I have the same family (even down to the same address in Castleford) but there is a 10 year old daughter on there called Annie Lister Rodger.
I can find no records of an Edith Rodger for the relevant time periods on www.freebmd.org.uk, but I can find records for Annie Lister Rodger, right down to a marriage in 1925.

Is it possible that at the time of the census her parents hadn't decided on a name and registered her at a later date under the name of Annie Lister Rodger?

Any information would be gratefully appreciated and stop me losing even more hair!  ;)

Many thanks.

Martin.

Hi,

I'd say it's the same child;  the birth certificate would confirm the parents.  I've got one on 1851 census who appears as ...."unnamed"! He was almost a month old.

This sounds very likely - I've seen similar things.  Perhaps they decided she didn't look like an Edith after all.  Come to think of it, my parents changed my name before my birth was registered on the grounds that the original choice was too long and cumbersome to write out on forms!

Census day in 1901 was 31 March so to be absolutely certain (or as certain as can be) you could order Annie Lister Rodger's birth certificate and check for a birth date on about 27 March 1901 (i.e. 4 days before the census).

Thanks for the replies.

It does make sense that it's the same person, so I'll confirm with the Birth Certificate.

Thanks again!
