Hi,
My grandad won a gallantry medal during WW1 and a local newspaper reported the citation but also added that he was at present in hospital at Leeds, having been wounded and gassed.
Can anyone suggest which hospital, or hospitals, this might be and where I would find any medical records.
Thanks,
Colin

Could i have his name and regiment? there may be military records available...there were a number of war hospitals around Leeds.Ill have a look in Leeds and The Great War and may have some locations.

Hello Ady, thanks for the quick response and offer.
He was Benjamin Cruddas (the Army got that wrong, as well!!) and was a sergeant with the Durham Light Infantry, service number 7202.
I've got his war service pretty well covered, apart from his hospitalisation. My mother says that he had a finger missing so this may have been the injury. Thankfully not a serious one and it didn't stop him going back.

The above one was the big hospital.... but there were a lot of smaller ones in the area.
I take it you have DCM card and citation plus his Medal Index Card?
I see what you mean about army spelling and his surname how many ways!!!

Hi Ady,
Yes, I have his Medal Index Cards, DCM as Cruddas and normal campaign medals as Cruddis.
I've also just got his entries on the Queen's South Africa Medal Rolls for the Boer Wars. The original entry didn't show the battles he was in, and which clasps were due, so they made a supplementary entry to correct it. The first had his surname as Cruddas and the correction as Cruddis.

It would quite likely have been the East Leeds War Hospital (now called St James University Hospital) unless he needed specialist care, this site has a good list

all the leeds hospitals are now part of the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, you could try contacting them, though older records, if they still exist, are probably in the west yorkshire archives now. Hope that helps,
Acorna.

Ady and Acorna,
Thanks for the suggestions. I haven't had much time to check them out but I appreciate the links. My gut reaction is that the NHS Trust should be my first point of enquiry for medical records, and see where it goes from there.

Colin

What about considering High Royds at Menston near Leeds? one of my relatives was gassed in WW1 and was also shell shocked. He was sent to High Royds to recover (not that he did - he actually died there). Some records for High Royds are available at the West Yorkshire archives.

I would go for the Seacroft Hospital Leeds

Thanks chrisj1961 and jksdelver, all suggestions are very plausible so it could be the proverbial haystack, but I've just sent an email enquiry to the Leeds Teaching Hospital Trust, to see if they can offer any help.
Many thanks, and I'll let you know of any developments,
Colin

I've heard from the Hospital Trust and they say that medical records are only kept for 8 years after a patient's last attendance. They also explained that during World War 1 many other buildings in Leeds were used as hospitals, such as hotels, and it's possible that WYAS might have some information.
Does anyone happen to know what records might be held by the WYAS, and whether the place of treatment would need to be known?

Colin
