Title: Melbourne War Memorial COMPLETED
Post by: lydiaann on Sunday 26 April 09 21:32 BST (UK)
If anybody out there lives fairly near the War Memorial in Melbourne, could they please let me know if Alfred Jones and William Jones are on it (from the first World War)?  Thanks.  These are the 2 handsome young men in question and, FYI, Alfred died just 25 days before the Armistice.

I'm sorry to report neither are on the war memorial in Melbourne. I have taken pictures, but without the names it won't be much use to you. Could they have lived in a neighbouring village when war broke out as there are quite a few in the locality.

I note from the War record of Alfred that he lived at 95, Traffic Street on enrolment. I take it that is the one in Derby, as that's where his medals seem to have been posted to.
If you need the war records give me a P.M.

You might try the National Archives of Australia which are found in canberra. They are to be found at this web site.
www.naa.gov.au/collection/RecordSearch.aspx
There are digitised records of all first war members of the armed forces there, and I would be surprised if you could not get a detailed record of their service, not to mention details of their deaths. You may have to search through a lot of Jones but if you have some details relating to their address or other family member ie next of kin,you should be able to sort them out.
I was able to get 64 pages of detail about an ancestor who lost his life in WW1. Good luck

Sorry baboz, but this is Melbourne in Derbyshire, England. I have found Alfred in the war records and 1911 census as living in the town of Derby. that is why he was not on the war memorial.

Hi, Skewbald: Thanks for your help.  I had thought that it might be on the Derby memorial as that is where the main recruiting office would be; also I found his war record and realized he lived in Derby...sorry for the confusion!
Maybe someone else out there lives near the Derby War Memorial and can check for me?
I note you mention the 1911 census - I thought this was not yet published?  Where did you find it to access information please (I'm looking for members of our families as well)?  And is the Scotland 1911 census available too?

The 1911 census is available but only from one site and on a pay per view basis. The Derby war memorial contains no names.

I'll p.m. you some details.

Skewbald: You are the best!  Thanks so much for your efforts, and for the p.m. which has been very useful indeed.  If I don't find the Jones family to return the photographs to, I shall 'adopt' them mentally and put them in the family binders which I am creating, so that they are never forgotten.  In the meantime, we will 'soldier' on.  Thanks again.

So you are not a descendent of the family, your just trying to find them?
Well pleased to be of help.  :)

No, they are not family but their photographs were in the family collection and the writing on them is my mother's, which would suggest they were family friends.  I know of so many people who would love photos of their ancestors and it seems a shame that I cannot (yet!) reunite this family.  Still, as I said, I shall love them as my own until the blood connection is made.

Oh, I forgot - look under 'Two Derbyshire Soldiers' and you'll see their pics and my search history through this medium!   :)

Thanks, everyone:  We have identified both men - and they ARE from my family or a branch of it.  William was in the RNVR and died just 17 days before his brother.  They are both buried in France and we believe their names will definitely be in the Derby Roll of Honour as we now know the family was there in 1911.  Another page closed.
