Title: Sussex MI look up for Peter Morris Ninfield
Post by: janeyjay on Saturday 25 April 09 17:44 BST (UK)
Hi

Please could someone look up the following for me when they get a mo -

Peter Morris married either Cordelia or Delia Easton in Ninfield, Sussex around 1837.  Not sure how much info there is but  I would love it to say 'son of.....' as I have been unable to trace any baptism for Peter Morris and cannot progress this line.

Many thanks

Jane

Hi Jane

The marriage was on 12 February 1837 at Ninfield which was just months before civil registration started.  He married Delviah Easton.  Before civil registration there was no requirement to add parents names unfortunately.

Have you checked census returns to give a clue where he was born.

It looks like from the 1851 census H0107 1636 13 18 that Peter was born in Battle.

He was baptised on 8 January 1813 at Battle, St Mary to John Morris, labourer and Ann Morris.

Possibility for marriage of John:

John Morris married Ann Harmer on 21 April 1794 at Crowhurst.  There don't seem to be any in the vicinity closer to 1813 so Peter could be a youngest child?

Incidentally I have Harmers in my tree.

Hi Kerry

Thanks for that, I have the CD of Hastings baptisms 1700 - 1877 but he is not listed. I do not know the area but  am thinking that Hastings coverage does not include Battle.

The date of the marriage  is just before civil registration so there is no ceftificate that I can send for either.

Hi Kerry

You are a star,  I have spent ages and ages searching for Peter.

Much appreciated.

Glad to be able to help Jane.

I think Battle might be out of the Hastings area but not 100% sure.

Found these Morris baptisms at Crowhurst for John and Ann
Mary Anne 20 September 1794
William 28 august 1796
Martha 16 December 1798
James 12 July 1801

Incidentally these come from the database on the Sussex Family History Group website, well worth joining if you have Sussex ancestors.

I am now looking at Battle

And Battle

Sarah 28 October 1803
John 11 April 1806
Rebecca 4 March 1808

and apart from Peter in 1813 there don't seem to be any others.

thanks Kerry

I have now been able to progress with my research.  I also have Harmers already in my tree so this will add to them.  Think I will seriously consider joining the SFHG as I have a lot of ancestors from Sussex.

Hi Jane

I'm going to see whether this Harmer fits in with my lot or not and I would advise the SFHG if you have Sussex ancestors and now they have this online access to parish registers for members only it is even better.  Currently it is mainly baptisms there, with burials and marriages to come and I have found stacks of baptisms I needed already.

What makes it somewhat easier than going to the record offices and looking through transcripts is that being a database you can search on a name across parishes.  Very very useful.
