Title: L'ESTRANGE / PENNYCUICK / MACMILLAN - Condobolin NSW
Post by: jeanlit on Friday 24 April 09 20:32 BST (UK)
I have previously asked this question with no luck at:

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,220558.0.html

I have been trying to find a connection between Wm Pennycuick, Thos Lestrange and Ronnie McMillan, whose gravestone is in Condobolin, New South Wales, Australia cemetery.

Condobolin cemetery site:
http://cemindex.arkangles.com/inscriptions.php

The only conclusion I have come up with is that Wm Pennycuick married Mary L'estrange, who had a brother Thomas, and her sister married Alexander MacMillan.

Can anyone shed any more light on this?

My notes show that Alexander William mariied Agnes McMillan (as Pennycuick). Notes also died 1944 Condobolin.
According to my notes Alexander had 3 daughters. Gladys M Pennyquick, born 1900 in Condobolin,Sybil B B 1902 Cond.
and Isobel B b 1905 Con.  I'm seeking James.
Another family member listed here was Ethel Bonie Pennycook b 1878 d 3July 1954 .Married Thomas Tasker in 1906 and he died 1917? Not sure if this is the same Thomas Tasker that was mayor of Condobolin in 1903.

This is what I have found on the Pennycuick family:

William Pennycuick married Mary L'estrange, registered 1869 at Goulburn NSW.

Jessie Pennycuick (born about 1871) Married Thomas Byrum in 1908 registered at Condobolin.

Possible birth of James Pennycook/Pennycuick registered at Binalong in 1872, father James mother Mary.

Alexander Pennycuick (birth registered at Yass in 1874) married Agnes.

Ethel Benie Pennycuick (birth registered at Gunning in 1878) married Thomas Tasker. [Benie was her grandmother's name]

Andrew Pennycuick birth and death registered at Condobolin
in 1880.

Agnes Stella Pennycuick may be another daughter - she married Sidney Robert Oppy registered at Condobolin in 1920.

Hi

Is there a William Pennycuick in the Pioneer Index?   He was married in NSW in 1869 so I guess he would have been born before 1850 at least.

Hi Jean,

Sorry no William.
The main names are John and James Pennycuick. The earliest is James who was married to a Janet Todd.

I will P.M you with all the Pennyycuicks from Tassie.
My Mother-in-Law lives in a Pennycuick Court in Tasmania.

Hi

Sorry to interrupt,

I am curious - do those in this thread pronounce the name 'Pennycuick' as 'Pennycook' or 'Pennyquick'?

My branch of the family seemed to have emigrated to the Rockhampton area in the 1800's and spread out from there.  My paternal grandfather (KG Pennycuick) was apparently insistent on the Pennycuick pronunciation - although I have ppl from Rocky who try to tell me different.  Grandfather was city engineer for many years so the name is a bit known in Rocky.

I have some info on our branch if its useful.

Hello  there Jean

I  guess you  would  have  noticed  this  head stone and details in  Condobolin

McMillan Ada Benie  5 Jul 1954 86y née L'Estrange; w/Alexander; mother

maybe  she is Ronnie mother!

I  canna see a death on  the NSW for Ronnie McMillan,  however  the headstone  may  just be a memorial  for them all  not neccesarily meaning  they are all buried  there.

Hi Jenn

I'm assuming that the Wm Pennycuick on this headstone is the one married to Mary L'estrange, who died in 1879 at Condobolin.

And that the Thomas L'estrange is Mary's brother who died in 1881 aged 7 or so in Condobolin.

But Mary's youngest sister Ada Benie didn't marry Alexander MacMillan until 1898 - so that's a long while after for Ronnie.  Of course, he may not have died in Condobolin, or even NSW - maybe even WWI overseas.  Who knows?

The other thing is that if it is a memorial for the three of them - Ronnie may have been a nickname rather than a true name ?!?

Hi David

No worries about interruptions -   but sorry I cannot help you with pronounication.

Joyh may be able to help, as she is closer to the family Pennycuick / Pennycook.

Cheers

Hello Jean

If  I  might suggest, you  contact  the cemtery  and see who  is actually buried  in  the grave and  their details, quite often  the cemtery  will  hold when  the died and  their  last known address.

The cemtery details are on  this link, hopefully :D

Hi All,

I was born and raised in the Condo area, and attended schools nearby in Parkes.  As I remember it the surname "Pennycuick" was pronounced "pen-eye-cuk" with the "cuk" as in "cut".  I attended school from late 1950's and finished HS in 1970. There are families with that surname living in the Hawkesbury area on the outskirts of north west Sydney.  One family may be involved in tennis administration in that district.

Cheers, Moi.
