McAfee .. I've always been a believer in you pay for what you get as far as these things are concerned Jane. It's better to be safe than sorry .. !   :)

I have been using Avast - free home version - for over 5 years. Brilliant. It was recommended to me by a VERY techie nerd! He also took both McAfee and Norton off my puter - said they eat up too much memory for nothing other than bells and whistles. Don't know how true that is but I have been more than happy with Avast and have just loaded it onto my new laptop.

There are bad reports about the latest AVG8? on these pages, but previously I had found it OK. Now trying AVAST on my netbook, seems OK, but am not used to it yet. I have had problems in the past with both McAfee and Norton. My main computer has the Virgin Package which comes with their Broadband. Have had no problems with it at all, just used it for 2 years, so if you are on Virgin  I recommend it.

I strongly advise you to get an anti-virus program (whichever one) before you do anything else....

Your internet provider should have a help page to set up your email, usually it's pop3 but it could be IMAP if it's a web based email client.

AVG8 seems ok now - got it on one new computer.

Also use avast on one.

The jury is out as to whether you get a better deal by paying; Norton can cause lots of problems, personally would not touch it.

McAfee has also caused me major conflicts in the past; I am currently reaching the end of the free trial on another new computer; but I think I will go back to AVG.

Agreed pjbuk, but get a program now and quick, before your computer catches something really nasty!

I hope that get a programme quick was not addressed to me!  Never been without AntiVirus, firewall, anti-rootkit, etc etc for at least 15 years!

I have found Threatfire to be excellent and free ;D. I have got rid of all the other well known ones. Threatfire is very userfriendly too and doesn't use too much of your comp resources whilst running in the background continuously.

Read up and see what you think, it even has a PCWorld recommendation too. :o

Hope you find what is most suitable for you.

AVG download filesize is 61,573kb so you must have a pretty fast connection if you managed to download that in a second.

Er...I think she was downloading Avast - whenever I've done it - I have to restart the puter.

And YES - There is a little globe thingy that is on the bottom of the screen- goes round and round as it scans web pages and emails. Also updates all the time and a man with a sexy voice says that the update is complete!

Technical ain't I!

I was having trouble about five years ago, and was advised to do away with Internet Explorer, and change to Firefox, install AVG and also Spybot, I did all this and haven't had any trouble since, I have always run this configuration on various computers and it seems to work fine for me.

The friend who told me reckoned IE was the major problem because all the hackers use that.

I think I'd rather use a browser which has had security problems detected and patched, rather than one that has not.  It is not safe to assume that just because security holes are not found in other browsers, that there aren't any to be found. Do you think that if you don't take your car for its MOT test every year, it's somehow safer to use, because no faults have been found ?

IE is the most-used browser, and it is also the most-targeted browser.  Hackers will always spend the majority of their time where they will have the most impact.

Just what trouble were you expecting ?  It is a total fallacy that hackers hack into computers to cause disruption.  In reality, the opposite is true.  If a hacker gains access to your PC, he can read your emails, look at files, log the keystrokes that you type, and even use your PC to distribute spam.  The last thing he would want is to make your PC do anything to suspect that your PC was doing anything out of the ordinary, because if you did, you might actually do something to curtail his activities.

Hackers don't hack into your PC to have fun - they do it to make money.  If you read this article (http://www.theregister.co.uk/2009/04/22/superbotnet_server/) you will learn how just 6 people in the Ukraine have managed to control a "botnet" of over 1,900,000 computers, many of which were in government departments and commercial establishments, and they were doing it to make money.

The first one i had did that, but when i had my P.c cleaned out last year he charged me for putting Norton on .So i had to use it,however when i went on broadband recently i could the download A.V.G but it doestn have the whirlie globe so it must be a newer version.I am not sure if it scans my mail as it comes in though. My provider is bt and i can see my mail on the webpage.I found using it very inconvenient so i went back to my O.E Its much quicker.
