Title: Lansdown
Post by: Tracy1 on Thursday 23 April 09 18:42 BST (UK)
I'm trying to find any information for John Lansdown.
Born around 1834, Westminster.  Died 1899.
Married Catherine Mahan 1854 and Sarah Brown 1871.

I think His first wife (Catherine) may have died in child birth.
She died Sept 1/4 1869, age 35 yrs, Lambeth.
There is a birth entry for Elizabeth Martha Lansdown Sept 1/4 1869, Lambeth.
Obviously with out a certificate I can't be sure.
I've been trying to find Elizabeth on the 1871 census without success.

Her Siblings;
Catherine Lansdown b.1858, Westminster
Mary Lansdown b.1861, Westminster
Susan Lansdown b.1863, Westminster
Are at 54 Brandon Street, Newington, Lambeth with their widowed father.
Elizabeth is not with the family.

Neither is her eldest sister;
Margaret Lansdown b.1856, Westminster.

The first child of John Lansdown with his second wife (Sarah Brown) was;
Martha Louisa Lansdown b.1872, Camberwell

I have recently had contact from a researcher, who had heard from his mother, that John Lansdown was the result of an upstairs-downstairs liason.
I heard through my family there could be a connection with Lord Lansdown (Marquise?) but no evidence to back this up obviously.
Any ideas how we could find out what really happened to start these family stories?
With thanks
Tracy

Hello Tracey   :)

There is a John Lansdown on the 1851 census, born 1834 Westminster, living with father Francis and mother Margaret in Kensington.  Father is a cordwainer.

Do you have that record ?

Thanks very much for your help.
I think I've just found Elizabeth Martha on the death register.  (Name spelt without the Z!)
Died Dec 1/4 1869, so that solves that mystery.

Hi.
I have John Lansdown b. Westminster, age 17yrs, on 1851 census  living with his mother (Margaret) and father James, who is a cordwainer.  Are you sure it's Francis?  I haven't looked at the original record.
With thanks
Tracy

Hi Tracey

Well -  I wouldn't like to have to bet on it  :-\

It is a poor image, and if the father is James his name doesn't look like that of the eldest son, nor does the first letter look like the J in John  :-\

I am also researching John Lansdown b.1833/34 Westminster, as I am a decendant of his son Frederick James. But I am getting nowhere with his birth. Have you had any luck and can you tell me more of this rumour ??? Thanks

I am the mother referred to in the original post. My son has been helping me to research the Lansdown family history. I am a granddaughter of Florence Elizabeth, sister of Frederick James. We have discovered quite a lot about John Lansdown but have yet to find any definite record of his birth or baptism, though we have found a possibility. I would be pleased to make contact with you.

Would love to know more. I found  the following-
James Lansdown b 18 May 1794 Westminster
                            m 1813 or 1817 Westminster to Margaret Mathews
                            d 1860 Westminster
also

James Lansdown b?
                            m 1793 Westminster  to Sarah Ann Pinchon
Maybe they are John's father and grandfather. All very frustrating. I have more info on Sarah Elizabeth Brown, if you want. Family rumor has it that she did not know of John's previous marriage and children. Frederick James was my great-grandfather, through his only child, my maternal grandmother. We live 2 miles from Bowood House, the Lansdown estate in Wiltshire. Like to think it is our ancestral home! My e-mail is * Thank you.

I have the baptism record for James Lansdown born August 28th 1794. His father was James and mother Susannah. As James Lansdown and Margaret Matthews called their first daughter Susan, I think that he might be the right one.
I cannot believe that Sarah Elizabeth did not know of John's first marriage and children. He had four living daughters, three of which were still living with him only the month before he was married to Sarah. The youngest Susan played an important role in my Mother's life. I believe my mother knew your grandmother as a child.

Hi am & 2 other distant cousins are tracing the Lansdown tree as well ... our common ancestor is Daniel Lansdown b. 1802 Westminster, a Builder ...

We had thought his father was James Daniel Lansdown c.1780 Bristol & d.1838 London, an architect, who married 1.Sarah Pinchon & then later 2.Mary Ann Robson ... one of us is still working through loads of info. sent from another distant cousin in USA .... so we can clarify, if this is correct, then we have the Lansdown tree back to Bristol to around 1600 ....

I have loads of info. on the Lansdowns of Westminster, Camberwell, Lambeth ... so do get in touch!

We have copies of both John Lansdown's marriage certificates and have wondered why the father's names were different. Perhaps it was simply a mistake because I have not been able to find another reason. His father James was born in 1794. Does that make Daniel his brother? We have found out about James Lansdown and Margaret Matthews through censuses and baptism records at the Westminster Archive. I would love to know more about the Westminster Lansdowns. :)

I also am interested  in James Lansdown died oct 16 1838 -architect, 41 years old.  I have nothing about any of his siblings. He was married to Maryanne and had 4 children- George, Mary Ann, James Chester , and Eliza. If this fits into your family I would appreciate any information on the ancestors. My line is through George.

Can you help with any information on Richard Lansdown b.c.1827 at Westminster. He was a plumber, wife Mary ?, and children Emmeline b.1848, Richard b.1850 and Julia b.1854. He may have been a child of James and Margaret (Matthews) Lansdown but not sure.
