Title: completed Clara Charlton/Mills
Post by: harley08 on Wednesday 22 April 09 14:22 BST (UK)
I am searching for any information regarding my g-g-g grandmother Clara Charlton/Mills who married James Edward Mills in Christchurch NZ in March 1864. I am having trouble finding out where she was born and if her and James ever came out to Australia with their son John Leonard Mills. Any information would be greatly appreciated as she is the missing piece of our family puzzle

Hi Harley08

Welcome to RootsChat.    :)

Am presuming that you already have the death certificate for Clara ... and that it doesn't give you the names of her parents either ?

It is of course unlikely that she was born in New Zealand  (the earliest recorded "CHARLTON" birth is in 1859).

From a quick search of passenger lists into New Zealand, I'm afraid that I couldn't see anything for a CHARLTON family nor for Clara, arriving prior to 1864.

Regarding whether Clara, James Edward and son John Leonard, ever "came out to Australia", you would need to post a query on the Australia board, for this.

John Leonard appears to have been born in NZ in 1881 and there are 2 further children with parents James Edward and Clara listed on the online birth index.
1880 - Maria Louise MILLS  ... and ... 1883 - Frederick Powley MILLS.   (There a several more births with parents named as just "James and Clara" who may also be connected ?)
You can view the index here  >>>

thank you for your reply. Clara has been very elusive to trace, I have recently obtained her marriage certificate and that doesn't show her parents or place of birth. I have John leonard Mills birth certificate which shows her place of birth but it is very hard to read. I am not sure if she died in Australia or New Zealand as I can't find a registration of death in either country.  Place of birth looks something like Aoud O.L.C, town is unreadable.

Hi Harley
Are you able to scan, photo and put bits of the cert online, sometimes other eyes can make out info, did it say time in NZ?
Sometimes from MArriage cert or Intention to Marry rego, you can see how long they were in country? where they married in a church or residence?
any witnesses, all things that may help lead us to answer

Do you have where James died?

1893 they appear stil in CHCH from electoral roll
Surname   MILLS Given Name   James
Residential Address   Conference St. Occupation Tailor
Surname   MILLS Given Name   Clara
Residential Address   17 Conference St. Occupation   Domestic duties

earlier children, one is
Ernest charles born 1865 1865/4748 Mills  Ernest Charles  (BMD site)
This info from NZSG index CD as a member has donated the birth cert. So if you are a member of NZSG you can get cert from NZSG. So presumably there would be other children in interim period till JOhn Leonard is born.

Bye

Hi there,

if she was married in Christchurch some one may be able to check the Church card index at Christchurch Central Library before I get a chance as not sure when I am going there next.

Just a suggestion as it will have names of witnesses etc and if they were full age

thanks everyone for your replies. Unfortunately their marriage certificate only states their ages and occupations. They were married 6 march 1864 in the Wesleyan Chapel in Christchurch. James was previously married to Margaret Atkinson who died a couple of years after they were married

I didn't know about Ernest, I can now include him in the family tree.

Frederick Powley was James and Clara's son and brother to my great-great grandfather John Leonard.

I will try and scan John leonards birth certificate to see if someone else can read it, hopefully they will have better eyes than me

Clara's age on her marriage was 19 in 1864

Her age at the birth of John Leonard was 37

John Leonards death certificate has parents listed as James Edward and Frances Clair? I don't know if the informant who was my great-aunt Marjorie has got this wrong

1851
St Paul Covent Garden, Westminster
John CARTMAN, head mar 26, Stationers envelope maker, born Middx, Marylebone
Frances M CARTMAN, wife mar 30, born Middx, St Pancras
John CARTMAN, son 2, born Middx, St Martins
Frances C CHARLTON, niece 5, Scholar, born Middx, St Andrews Holborn
HO107 1511 15 23

No sign of that one in 1861. No sign of a death or marriage either.

John CARTMAN married Frances Mary HICKMAN in 1848

There is a marriage for a James CHARLTON in Sep qtr 1843 where one of the brides is a Clara HICKMAN, West London, which includes St Andrews Holborn. A good chance of being Frances Clara's parents. The IGI has a Sophia CHARLTON  was born 1847 daughter of James and Clara as well.

In 1851 I think that Clara CHARLTON is a married nurse aged 28 in house of John DAWSON, Albermarle St, St George Hanover Square. Her birthplace is St Andrews Holborn - HO107 1476 65 37. Can't find James though.

Hi

Yes, I think this one looks most promising !    :D

And you of course, have that clue - "Frances Clair" on John Leonard's death certificate.

I'm not sure if you are aware that you can order a transcript of (NSW) BDM records ?    It's much better value than paying full price for a certificate, and you can also have it emailed to you in just a matter of days.   For details, see >>

That's good news Harley.   :)

Hmmm  ... mother's name Clara "Harris" (and not "Hickman")  ???   But I'm sure you'll sort it all out.

Good luck with your continued searching.

Hi Jenni and all Mills family researchers

I've found you again on this post regarding Clara Charlton.

I am excited to have found some information about the Mills family of Christchurch in New Zealand.

I am descendant from Edward James & Clara - and thier son John Leonard Mills in NSW Australia. I would love to hear any further information that anyone has about this line. I really have very little information about the Mills family and any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Jac

Hi, After years of searching, I'm pleased to find some interest in the Mills family!
I am descended from James Alexander MILLS, (B 29 Apr 1867 Christchurch, Married Margaret Mary WALSH 16 Dec 1893 Sydney, D 30 Sep 1931 Sydney)

Hi descendants of John Leonard mills.....
I'm new at this...
He seems to have been quite the ladies man...was charged with wife and child desertion by 3 women I know of so far.
Anyway....his son James Edward mills was my grandfather....and he told the story that we were of Maori descent.
Can anyone shed light on that for me please!!!!
Leona

Hi Leona,

Thats news to me! Are you able to give me further information about this? And are there any records of this that I can find? Are you located in Aus or elsewhere?

John leonards son Frank is my grandfather.

Your grandfather was called Eddie is that right? Do you have any pictures or any more info about any of the other siblings?

I have also heard the same story about Maori descent but I have been unable to find any evidence of this.

Do you have anything at all? Or was this just passed on to you verbally?

Looking forward to hear from you.

Thanks
Jac
