Hi rootschatters and restorers,
Could anybody please share some opinion as to the date that this photograph was taken? I believe it to be somewhere in Scotland (accurate Iknow :D). I do not feel comfortable making an accurate guess myself but would assumethat is id late nineteenth century. I was sent this picture by a relative and sadl we do not know who the people in the picture are but I think the ldy appears in anoter that I have, only older. I am guessing she is the mother of the two boys pictured. I think the boy sitting down is not a lot younger than me. I'd go ape if my mum tried to dress me like that :D Was this dress of the working class or middle class? It is obviously their best frock although I am not sure about the lady.
Look forward to hearing from you and your opinions on this one :) Apologies the info about the picture itself.
Regards,
Reaybo :)

Hi Matt :)
I'll put a first bid in for the first decade of the 20th century, given the woman's clothing and length of skirt . This became shorter towards the end of the decade so 1900-1905 maybe.
It's either that period or late 1880s but I think, on balance, it's the later date.

I have made a start on the picture, although have to go out now, so am unable to finish it at the moment. Will do some more on it when I get back, which should be this afternoon. Sorry I couldnt get it done now, but Ill be as quick as possible

Hi Matt :)
I'd go along with Gadget - the lady is wearing a blouse and skirt combo and the hairstyle is typical of about 1895-1905, which would fit with the boys' outfits too I think.
The body language suggests it is mother and sons as you suspected :)
Cheers

Hi Reaybo,
Never apologise for such a lovely picture, we have got wonderful restorers on these boards, but you have to ask them to restore the picture if you want it done.
The lady is wearing a very nice Victorian broach, at her neck, so I will agree with Prue & Gadget re the dates of the picture.
If that was the fashion for the boys, you'd wear it, all the other lads would have look the same. I am sure that you'd not want to be different :D These two are really smart, but the little lad on the right looks ill to me.
I think they are Mother and Sons as well

Thanks guys,
That's pretty cool! When I first saw the little boy to the right I first thought he didn't look normal, for want of a better phrase. The thing is I dont know who he is so I cannot research further. Although, for the mother, I think her name was either Margaret Quinn nee McGuigan or Ann O'Brien nee Doonan.
Lisa, thankyou very much, those two restores are brilliant, you are a star!!! I cannot see anything else that needs to be done. I am very pleased with those two reproductions ;D
Do you think the woman in the pic is in her late 40's? Mid 50's? I have two possibles as mentioned. Ann Doonan (born c1834) and Margaret Ann McGuigan born c1850, both women born Ireland. If I take an educated guess can I presume accurately the woman in the pic is Margaret McGuigan, and her two sons (they would have had the surname Quinn).
Regards and thanks again all,
Reaybo :)

If I had to choose between those two, I'd say it's the younger lady - she looks to be just in her 50s. The other lady would be in her 60s/70s at this time so definitely not her (unless she's found the elixir of youth!)
-
Hi :)
Like Prue, I also think it's the younger woman. I'd think the woman in the photograph was in her late 40s-very early 50s.

Snap Gadget,
I agree with you again, i was about to say that but you beat me to it.
I think that poor child looks ill, anorexic springs to mind, but surely not in Victorian times. There must be other reasons why the poor child is so thin, his mum and brother look well nourished so not likely to be lack of food.
Some absorption problem perhaps. His very thin hands and face mean he has some sort of illness.
Lovely restore Irene.

Thankyou very much for that restore Irene, great!
I never thought that the child could be so skinny, seems quite sad I hope he survived and went on to marry. He looks about 13?? And his brother, around 18?
Hmm, the mystery deepens...
Thanks again, this is something to ponder over... =/
Reaybo.

I think this is the same woman...only later on in life...
-
Definitely is :D
She still looks so sad though :-\
-
I really don't like the sound of that...

Hi Matt,
Just my thoughts - there is something wrong with his hands, see how they are falling, its not natural. I have stood in front of the the mirror and tried to recreate the hand pose, and its just not working. The fingers to the joint are too long, especially the little finger. Or maybe I have odd hands - but try it for yourself.
If there is something not quite right there it may give you a clue as to what could be wrong with the poor wee lad.

Hi Matt
You mean that I think she looks sad?
Do you have her story because she definitely seems to have an air of saddness about her in both photos.

The fingers on the left hand look stunted compared to what I can see of the right ..... maybe its my imagination.
Hows the studies going Matt? anymore stories?
Cheers

PS: Jacket doesn't seem to fit right

Hi again everyone :)
I think the lady in the pictures looks very sad too...particularly in the latter. Maybe in this pic, the little boy had died? It will mean me chasing up the children (there were around 7 boys) but I will get onto that during summer or before if I can find the cash lol.
IF this woman is Margaret Ann Quinn nee McGuigan then this photo was takennot long before she died. Her death certificate for 1907 states that she was 45 at the time of death, but I think she was more around the age of 55 (who knows what happened there!) She was born c1850 in either Scotland or Ireland. My guess is Ireland. I dont know exactly when she came to Scotland if she was born in Ireland but she was definitely there in 1870, although may have gone back to have her first child,Henry, around 1871.
Regards,
Matt :)
