Title: Palmers of Leicestershire
Post by: lisasteve34 on Tuesday 21 April 09 23:14 BST (UK)
My  great great Great Grandfather Joseph Palmer was a Gentleman and it has been pased down the family that they owned a business in Leicstershire. it was something to do with leather and either millinary or hoisery. I am not sure, however i have found a Palmer Brother Ltd there which was a hoisery factory. Also many of the children worked in hoisery so may indicate towards this. I would love to here more from any one who knows the history of leicestershire and may know of the Palmer family and business.

Many thanks
Lisa

He married my gt aunt Annie (aka Molly) Harding.

I havn't found him on the census, I don't have an ancestry account. I do have information on the generation below.

They had Elizabeth (1827) Sarah (1829) John (1835) Caroline (1838) MAria (1840) and Joseph (1846).

I have him (Joseph)  :D

1841 - Atkin St, St Mary, Leicester
Joseph Palmer age 30  Wool comber
Caroline Palmer      35
Caroline                   3
Elizabeth                 14
Sarah                      12
John                         7
Maria                        1

by 1851, Caroline (snr) is shown as head of household, living at Henshaw St, Leic St Mary, with the above children plus Joseph age 5. The younger Caroline is shown as 10 years old and even she is shown as working ("Cotton xxx"- same as her mother - I can't read the second word). The other children (exceot Joseph) are working as hosiers.

HO107/2090 Folio 631 Page 37

Joseph snr has disappeared (although Caroline seems to have said that she was married, rather than widowed) - perhaps someone else will find him?

BTW a currier is one who worked tanning leather by incorporating grease into it.

John Palmer is shown in 1861 visiting the OHare family in Little Gonerby, just outside Grantham.

By 1871, John was married to Elizabeth and was living in 85, Birstall St, St Margaret, Leic with the older children that you already know about - Henry through to Charles. Again, he's a currier.

My gt Uncle Sydney Palmer's father was a Thomas. This is the only info I have on him tho.

Maybe your Thomas is his dad as he is aged  20 on your 1901 census?

Aparently Joseph was away a lot on business and as he wasn't on this census do you think he may be somewhere else?

Hi Folks,

I came across this by accident as I was googling and was excited to discover that my great great grandfather was Joseph Palmer.

I am the grandson of Squires Palmer, son of John Palmer. Squires emigrated to Australia in 1913 and lived in Melbourne the rest of his life.

Lisa,

Glad to know we have a common ancestor. I am quite new to this and could not work out how to send you a personal message.
Perhaps you could send me one first and I'll send you my email..
