I was most grateful for the help I received with the 1841 census. I have located the same family in 1851 but am having real difficulty in reading the form. This time the Head of the household is recorded as Mary STRAFFORD but I can't make out whether she is a widow. If so I've got the wrong family completely as my Morton Straughan was present at his son's marriage two years later or at least he is not recorded as deceased.
I am wondering whether it says "Mariner's wife"? He was a shipwright.Does this count as a mariner? Also I cannot read the occupations for the other members of the family. If anyone could help with this I would be most grateful.
Kind regards
Jane Sarah

Morton Straughan was present at his son's marriage two years later or at least he is not recorded as deceased.
Hi Jane Sarah
Whether or not the father is deceased at time of marriage is not always recorded on marriage certs.
See: http://www.dixons.clara.co.uk/Certificates/marriages.htm#COL8
I can't see any later death reg for that name, so I'm sure the registration Jen gave will be correct.
He was a shipwright.Does this count as a mariner?
Shipwright: Builder and repairer of ships, but could have meant ship's carpenter, in which case he may have gone to sea to do repairs etc

Hi Jen ,Laurina and Barbara
Thanks for all your efforts on my behalf. It has clarified a lot of things for me and I will follow up your leads. I think I'm back on track again. I didn't think of free BMD for Morton Straughan and I am pleased to know that John was a blacksmith as that is what it says on his marriage certificate.
Many thanks again
