Title: Cleland
Post by: tigerquoll on Saturday 18 April 09 06:08 BST (UK)
Hi,

I am researching William Cleland b 1805 Glasgow son of Dr James Cleland b 1770, Glasgow and  Margaret Rogers. He immigrated to Tasmania in 1834. The local paper records his marriage -

"Wm Cleland Esq. of Thornhill, to Amelia, eldest daughter of Thomas Shone Esq. of Stanton House, New Norfolk."

I was wondering if there if a "Thornhill" in Glasgow as I can't find a town or property with this name in Tasmania. Any information on this family would be great.

regards Janine

There is certainly a Thornhill in Dumfrieshire -

Thats not to say tHe good Doc couldn't have been born in Glasgow and later moved to Dumfrieshire.

Hi,

Thanks for the replies, but as far as I can tell Dr. James Cleland was born in Glasgow and worked there as  Glasgow’s Superintendent of Public Works. He is buried in the crypt at Ramshorn Kirk, Glasgow. So I don't think that the Thornhills in other Parishes are likely but you never know. I haven't researched him much.

Hi,
I found this info on the Glasgow Story web site and I was wondering if this monument still exists in Glasgow?

"Following Cleland's death a tenement was erected at the top of Buchanan Street which bore the inscription "The Cleland Testimonial"."

If Williams marriage was in the local paper surely it would refer to his home at the time.

The OPR's confirm his BAPTISM. Have you viewed the record to see if it gives anymore info.

13/01/1805 CLELAND WILLIAM son of JAMES CLELAND and MARGARET RODGER at Glasgow GLASGOW CITY/LANARK

William Cleland was my 3rd cousin 3 times removed. I have never seen anything to suggest that he or any of his family had any connection to either Thornhill in Stirlingshire or Thornhill in Dumfries-shire.

It is always possible that Thornhill was the name of a house rather than a town, parish or property. There are plenty of such in Scotland.

However if he lived in Tasmania at the time of his marriage I would have thought it referred to where he was living at the time.

Can we exchange notes? I'd be interested in any information about his descendants.

Hi All,

Thanks for the replies and the links to the  Cleland  Testimonial Building.

I have finally found "Thornhill" in Tasmania. It was the name of a property owed by an Andrew Downie, also from Scotland,
"By 1824 Downie had acquired some land of his own, by grant. This farm he called Thornhill, and during 1825 he cleared part of it and sowed crops, as well as running a flock of sheep." http://eprints.utas.edu.au/10910/
Forfarian I would love to compare notes with you. I will PM you when I get a chance.

cheers Janine

+Did you know that Cleland is pronounced Cleeland and not Clelland. the name is softed from its Strathclyde Briton name Kneland.

Building at the Top of Buchanan Street Glasgow is Cleland Testament Building. Was built for James Cleland who Worked in Public Works to improve lives of Local People.

Sure this is same line of Cleland

DR James Cleland is meet to be related to Cleland of that Ilk.
