Title: John McLean Beats & Agnes Budge - Virginia?
Post by: Worthingbudge on Friday 17 April 09 13:02 BST (UK)
I was hoping I might be able to find out what became of one branch of my family.

John McLean Beats married Agnes Budge in May 1845 at Dundee, Scotland.  They then emigrated to the USA sometime after, I believe to Virginia as that was the name of their first child.  They then reverted to traditional family names and had: John, William, Agnes, Murray, Robert and I believe two others.  I'm not aware of their birth dates.

If anyone has any connection or knows any information, or can point me in the right direction - I would be very appreciative.

Many thanks ... Simon

IGI (www.familysearch.org) lists 7 children for John and Agnes, including a daughter names Virginia, but they were all born in Dundee, Scotland, not America and first child listed born 1838 which is earlier than the date you had for marriage: John (1838), Charles (1840), David (1845), Murray Threpland (1849), Virginia (1850), Agnes (1852), Robert (1854).
Think that you need to check Scottish census and vital records next to see if and when the family might have moved to America.

I found the family in  Monifieth, Angus on the 1851 Scotland census at Ancestry listed as Berrts. I couldn't find them at ScotlandsPeople under Beats or by just searching Be*. When I searched another name on the same page that entry came up in the search results but it said there was no image available. Here's the entry:

1851 census - Brook Street, Broughton Ferry, Angus

John M Bertts, head, 38, auctioneer, born Dundee, Forfarshire
Agnes Bertts, wife, 34, born Edinburgh, Midlothian
John Bertts, son, 13, born St.Vigeans, Richmond
Charles Bertts, son, 10, born Dundee, Forfarshire
George Bertts, son, 9, born Dundee, Forfarshire
David Bertts, son, 5, born Dundee, Forfarshire
William Bertts, son, 4, born Dundee, Forfarshire
Marray I Bertts, son, 1, born Monifieth, Forfarshire
Virginia Bertts, daughter, 3 Mo, born Monifieth, Forfarshire

The family is at 30 Reform St, Dundee, Angus on the 1861 Scotland census. At Ancestry they are listed as Bealls but at ScotlandsPeople they are Beatts.

John M Beatts, head, 49, auctioneer & vatualor, born Dundee
Agnes Beatts, wife, 46, born Edinburgh
George W Beatts, son, 19, saddler, born Dundee, Forfarshire
David Beatts, son, 15, clerk, born Dundee, Forfarshire
William Beatts, son, 14, druggist, born Dundee, Forfarshire
Murry T Beatts, son, 11, born Dundee, Forfarshire
Virginia Beatts, daughter, 10, born Dundee, Forfarshire
Agnes Beatts, daughter, 8, born Dundee, Forfarshire
Robert Beatts, son, 6, born Dundee, Forfarshire

From the 1871 census, the family is at 31 Millars Wynd, Dundee, Angus:

John M Beatts, head, 58, auctioneer, born Dundee, Forfarshire
Agnes Beatts, wife, 54, born Edinburgh
David Beatts, son, 24, auctioneer's clerk, born Dundee, Forfarshire
Murray T Beatts, son, 21, engineer in steam sup, born Dundee, Forfarshire
Virginia Beatts, daughter, 20, music teacher, born Dundee, Forfarshire
Agnes Beatts, daughter, 18, government pupil teacher, born Dundee, Forfarshire
Robert Beatts, son, 16, chemist's apprentice, born Dundee, Forfarshire

On the 1881 census at 8 Forfar Road, Dundee, Angus:

John McLean Beatts, head, 68, auctioneer, born Dundee, Forfarshire
Agnes Beatts, daughter, 28, housekeeper, born Dundee, Forfarshire

I couldn't find John Beatts on the 1891 census but I did find a death for John McLean Beatts, 82, in 1893 in St. Andrews, Dundee at ScotlandsPeople. There is also a death registration for Agnes Budge Beatts, 65, who died in 1880 in St. Andrews, Dundee.

Well - that's a bit of a surprise!  :o

Many thanks aghadowey and Jacquie.  I must admit I hadn't looked for them in Scotland as a great aunt of mine had suggested they had moved to America.  That and Virginia being given as the first child, I'd put 2 and 2 together and seemingly made 5.

All seems to tally apart from the first children birth dates and their marriage.

Thank you again - I will investigate further!

What a small world, John Mclean Beatts was my Great Great Great Great Grandfather.

The actual surname is not spelled Beats or Bertts, but Beatts, for some reason the name gets distorted in different censuses over the years.

Quote:
John McLean Beatts
William Beatts (John M Beatts son, though he wasnt a Druggist, he was a goldsmith & diamond cutter)
William Beatts (great great grandfather Died in WWI)
William Beatts (My great granftather)
William Beatts (Grandfather died in 1993) -One of his sons resides in US atm.
William Alan Beatts (My dad)
William Kevin Beatts (Me)

One of my family members has traced the Beatts family back to 1703 when they had occupancy of a house on the banks of the river Tay, in a village called GranTully near Avimore. This would have been J M Beatts ancestors. One of them named William Beatts, which you can see has become a dynasty in our family, myself being William Beatts IX (9th).
The Beatts family have several parts that have emmigrated to the US over the years, but some of us still remain in bonny Scotland :-)

Hi there Danganess!  We are distantly related!  I live in Australia too.  Had a holiday in Qsld last Xmas.  Wish we'd been able to catch up then! My Great x 3 Maternal Grandmother was Jessie Beatts Fleming, great x 2 Grandaughter of John McLean Beatts.  I'd love to give my email address, but that seems to get deleted by the moderator.  Perhaps you can use the pm system to give me your email address and then I can respond.  Or you could find my family tree on Ancestry.com (Tiernan nee Maclaine-Cross) and contact me that way?

Hi all,
To take the Beatts / Beats tree a bit further I recently came across a piece of information from the International Genealogical Index  stating:
 * Mrs John Rattray or Beat (Female) - Spouse. John Rattray or Beat, born about 1687 of Dunkeld, Perth, Scotland
 * John Rattray of Beat (Male) - Father. John Rattray or Beat, born 1 May 1709 of Dunkeld, Perth Scotland.
 * Margaret Beat (Female) - Father. John Rattray or Beat, Christened 19 August 1711, Lethendy and Kinloch, Perth, Scotland.

It is starting to look like the name went from Rattray to Beat, Beats then Beatts.
There is a story in the book "Reminiscences of a Dundonian" by J.M.Beatts which hints at the change of the family name where some members changed to Beatts.
Thanks all for the information received, Tim

Hi, JMB  and Agnes’s Budge are my great-great grandparents on my mother’s side. John was highly educated, he went to the burgh school followed by 5 years at the classical school and when finished he started work at the legal firm of Smith & Cagney. After 3 years of law he left with his wife for America to sort out family estates in Virginia. On completing that family task, I believe it was for the Budge family connections. They returned to Dundee where John took over his father-in-laws auctioneer and valuer business. He became a well respected member of the Dundee society, became the Commissioner of Police, a member of the Dundee council, a member of the Dundee Grammar School board and a noted writer with his articles being printed in newspapers and journals. He died at St Andrew’s and was buried with one of his granddaughters, unfortunately the grave is unmarked. His son, my great grandfather John McLean Beatts married Christina Lawson and worked for a time in and around the Liverpool docks in sales of jute bags. He learnt Chinese at the docks to add to his education as an accountant or bookkeeper. He fell on hard times so took his family back to Dundee and sailed to different ports buying goods to sell back in Scotland. He eventually settled in Halifax, Queensland, Australia where he purchased land to grow sugar cane, which he called “restview”. He sent for his wife, Christina Lawson, son John Leyland Beatts and daughters Agness Lizzie, Christina and Isabella Lawson.  Hope this helps?
