Thank you Sean.  I visited the site and sent an email.  I found a birth certificate for my great grandfather's brother and it lists the birthplace as Coolagh in Union of Mountmelick.  I assume this would narrow the search, but not sure what Coolagh represents.  I found a birth certificate for another relative born in Union of Mountmelick and the birthplace is Ballinahemmy.  Are Coolagh and Ballinahemmy voting disticts?
Thanks again, Marie

Coolagh is a townland in Co. Laois

Townlands are the smallest unit of land division.

Union is the Poor Law Union (PLU) and this is the same as the registration district - used later in Civil Registration

you can search the townland database at this link : www.thecore.com/seanruad

Coolagh is in the Union of Mountmellick, but Portnahinch, Coolbanagher, would be the Portarlington area, as Tinnahinch is in the Clonaslee area, as is Ballinahenny.

Hi Marie
Coolagh and Ballinahimmy are both townlands in Clonaslee Parish, a little west of Clonaslee village.
There is today a family of Dalys still living in Coolagh, they would probably be your cousins.

In Griffiths Valuation of Ireland,1850, there is a Luke Daly living in Killinaparson, another townland, very close to Coolagh.
In the 1841 census,175 people lived in Killinaparson.By 1851 following the Famine, there were only 31
people there, and today this townland has no population, a place that never recovered from the Famine.
hope this helps.

Thanks very much Sean and Jim.  It seems that Killinaparson would be closer to Coolagh than Main St. in Clonaslee?  How would I go about finding contact information for the Daly family in Coolagh?  Can you recommend a good site for a map of these townlands?

Thanks again, Marie
