I have just registered and noticed this post. I am also looking for information about my Grandfathers brother who also served in the first world war. He was a seargent in the 1st battallion of the Dublin Fusilliers. He was killed in action in 1917 and I am trying to trace any living relatives. His name was Patrick Orchard born in Dublin 1891 and married mary Fitzpatrick in 1915 in Cavan.
Because this is an unusual name in Ireland I am hoping to be able to track down some information.
If anyone can help please I would be very grateful

there's a few Orchard entries on the Dublin 1911 census - see the National Archive Census website : http://census.nationalarchives.ie
and from the familysearch Irish Civil index ... this looks like his birth index :
Name: Patrick Orchard
district: Dublin South / type: Birth
date : Jul - Sep 1891
Vol: 2 / Page: 655

Orchie,
It is only a minor point but Patrick Orchard was a Sergeant in the ROYAL IRISH FUSILIERS, 1st Bn, according to the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and Ancestry web Sites.

Welcome to Rootschat. I've split your post and moved it from Co. Dublin to Ireland-General as connections to both Dublin and Cavan are mentioned.
Rootschat isn't a forum for tracing living relatives but if anyone has recent family information for you they can send it to you by PM (personal message) after you've 3 posts.

Sorry didn't realise this site wasn't for tracing family. I was just hoping that by posting the surname Orchard someone in my family would recognise it and reply. Anyway thanks to all for the advice.
The Orchards in Dublin Census 1911 are my family. Is the Dublin Fusiliers different from The Royal Irish Fusiliers

there's no Orchard entries in the current Dublin phonebook... so maybe they moved on, or changed the name.
see here for some info on the various Irish WW1 Battalions : http://www.greatwar.ie/ire_batir.html

Many WW1 era service records were destroyed in the Blitz. The Ancestry website has many of the surviving records online

If you're interested, the War Graves Photographic Project have a photograph of his entry on the memorial.

They'll supply you with a copy for a nominal charge.

Hello Barbara,
I am contacting you to let you know that I have a number of items belonging to the Fitzpatrick family, I believe these are your grandfathers (SJT.P Orchard R.IR. Fus 9137) war medal, a victory medal to who I think is Mary's brother Patrick Fitzpatrick (13-5987 PTE. P. Fitzpatrick North.D FUS) and three photo albums of what I believe to be of the Orchard & Fitzpatrick family.
I was given the medals by my wife's father only a couple of days ago! (2014) and wanted to research them and found this post.
I would like to return these items to your family if you so wish. Why you may ask yourself, well I have also been looking for my own great grandfathers medals but as such have not been able to find them. I live in london and have the medals here with me, but the photo albums are in Dundalk. I have asked my father in law if he would be happy to return these items to you and we are both in agreement that it would be nice for your family to have these records. I am new to the website so hope you will be able to message be directly and I can pass on my contact details to you, so we maybe able to get these items back to you.
Looking forward to your reply and many kind regards,
Lawrence Hawker

Hi and welcome to Rootschat,
I think it's an act of real generosity to return the medals and most people would give their eye teeth, to use a very old-fashioned expression, to get their hands on a family photo album.
You can send a personal message yourself after you've made three posts.
If you make a quick reply to this one from me, you should then be able to send a message to the person
you want to contact.
Best wishes.

Thanks Joan,
I do hope that Barbara gets my message as I myself would so love to find any info about my own grandfather's medals or any information about him ( Edward G Hawker, Durham Light Infantry 79911) And would be so happy if i was able to help someone else in their search then it would be great as it can feel like an labyrinth to find a loved one X
Joan, if you have any pointers with regards to my own search then that would be great Thanks. L

Ive just looked at his medal index card....he had no overseas service in WW1 so as such wasnt entitled to campaign medals.
He was entitled to a silver war badge and his entry is on ancestry silver war badge rolls.
He would have served within uk on home service.
