Trying to track down the birthplace of my Great Great Grandfather Daniel McGarrigle. Having tried all websites that I know about the only Daniel McGarrigle I have came across was in Convoy around 1857, he married a lady by the name of Julia McColl, I believe they came over to Scotland around the 1870 mark. Would appreciate it if anyone a lot more experienced than myself could steer me in the right direction and give me a few pointers on the best way to try and find out this information.

Welcome to Rootschat. Irish research isn't ever easy without knowing where your family came from so you may not be able to find any information but we'll certainly try to help you.
First of all, are you certain that your did Daniel McGarrigle married Julia McColl? (if not then you could be following the wrong person). It would be good if you could tell us what you know for certain about Daniel. For example, if you found him in Scottish census records you should have an approxiamate age for him. You've mentioned 'Convoy around 1857' so you could perhaps explain this reference as it might be an important clue to search for the McGarrigles in Ireland.

Thanks Aghadowey for your reply, the information I have, has been taken from "Scotlands People". The 1881 census shows both my great great Grandparents Daniel McGarrigle and Julia McGarrigle (McColl) were both born in Ireland, their siblings are shown as being born in my hometown in Scotland, what I did notice however was that on the death certificate for Daniel McGarrigle, his name appeared to have been changed to Dennis he passed away in 1909 and his wife in 1914. I have got their birthdates to around 1840-1850 as their appears to be conflicting ages on certain documents I have traced. My other Great Great Grandparents on my mothers side appear to be as daunting as I cannot find them anywhere, they were both from Ireland also. I will take one step at a time, as

Not sure if Siberian Tiger had actually finished their post but if their Daniel McGarrigle was born 1840/1850 (estimated from Scottish records) then it's hardly likely that he was head of a household at the time of Griffith's Valuation in 1857.
More important would be trying to find a record of Daniel and Julia's marriage. I can't see any possibilites for their marriage in civil registrations but registration of Catholic marriages didn't start until 1864 in Ireland.
Before posting this I had a quick look at Scottish census records and found the family in Port Glasgow.
1881- Denis (45) wife Julia (35) eldest child James (18). Since James was born c1863 it is likely that the marriage, if in Ireland, won't show up in civil index.
1891- Denis (50) wife Julia (45)
1901- Dennis (63) wife Julia (62)

Hi everyone,
Some more information about Denis and Julia McGarrigle. They are my great-great-grandparents, and can be found in the 1861 census living in Port Glasgow:
Denis McGERIGAL 24, Julia McGERIGAL 22, and Catherine 11months.
All of their children were to be born in Port Glasgow:
Catherine-1860, James-1862, Mary Ann-1864, John-1866, Margaret-1868, Daniel-1870 and Jane-1874.
The children can be found in the IGI, Batch No.C115741. The earlier records give their mother's name as Gila McCOUL, gradually changing to Janet McCOLL by 1874. Did Gila sound like Julia?
Searching the IGI, this time Batch No.M115741 for Gila McCOUL we find that she married Dennis McGARRIGOL in Port Glasgow in 1859. So we should be able to see the marriage record at Scotland's People. This should give us the four parents of Dennis and Gila.
In that area by the way, a Dennis (Denis) was sometimes known as 'Denny', which could be confused with 'Danny'.
In 1880 Catherine McGARRIGLE married my great-grandfather George GEMMELL, the register names Catherine's parents as Denis and Janet McGARRIGLE (m.s.McCOLL).
Hope this helps.

The female Irish Christian name Sile often appears on early BMD records translated as Giley. This in turn became Julia, Sheila, Cecelia, Celia and Cicily

Hi everyone,
I had another look at the IGI's for Denis and Julia McGarrigle's children, and found that Jane's record (1874) names her parents as DANIEL McGarrigle and Janet McColl. All the others say Dennis or Denis.

Hi
I checked Scotlands People and sure enough Daniel and Gila were married on the 14th of November 1859 in Port Glasgow at St Johns church, the parents of Daniel are James McGarrigol and Catherine Cunningham, I cannot really make out who the parents for Gila are the writing is not very clear. My connection to this line (my fathers side) is their son John married Bridget Welsh in 1888 at the same venue, they are my Great Grandparents. I would dearly love to find out which area of Ireland they came from, I am presuming it would be the same for both of them, though we cannot be sure of that. I have traced my mothers line back to Antrim but I am struggling with this one probably due to not knowing how or where to look, and I suppose the name variables throws up other lines, if anyone could give me some more ideas I would willingly pursue, that would include a visit to Ireland to check any forms of information that might be out there.

Hi everyone,
An earlier post (reply #2) mentioned the deaths of Dennis (Daniel) and Julia (Gila, Janet) McGarrigle in 1909 and 1914.
Their death records could provide some information, e.g. Father's name and occupation, mother's maiden name, name of spouse. These could now be useful, given that the marriage record is difficult to read.

HI everyone. Came to this thread a bit late. My family came to Port Glasgow at the same time as Denis and Julia and I belive that Denis is my Great great grandfather's brother. We have a family name of Denis (which I have and my father and grandfather were both called Denis (or Denny for short). I still have an auntie who knew my great grandmother and lived in the same tenement block (which all the family did). Bay Street is no longer there but the whole family lived in that road or very close to it as Port Gloasgow was not a very big place at the turn of the last century. I believe that my great grandfather was killed in the first world war (Royal Dublin Fusiliers) and there is an inscription on the war memorial in the town to that effect. My aunty used to visit Northern Ireland/Donegal in her childhood and belives it was somewhere just outside Derry. The census has the family members down as Mussel Fishermen which is interesting as that is the type of job that immigrants would do now. MJy family all went on to work on the shipyards.

Hello all
I am also working on the same family have been in touch with siberian tiger for a few months now - Denis and Julia were my Great Great grandparents.
Clonbur6 I have details of Daniel McGarrigle who is listed on the Port Glasgow war memorial and certs which I am happy to share - will drop you a pm
Denis and Julias wedding cert have both fathers listed as Labourers and the names for Denis folks are James McGarrigle and Catherine Cunningham. For Julia are Cornelius McCoul and Margaret McNicols or McNeil.
The death cert for Denis in 1909 gives the fathers occupation as Farmer and his wifes maiden name as McCool
The death cert for Julia gives the spouses name again as Daniel McGarrigle and her fathers occupation is also changed to Farmer - mothers maiden name is not noted.
Still no idea what part of Ireland to search though.......................

I was updating my tree and have found the person you mentioned from the war memorial in Port Glasgow.

Formerly 8638, Argyll And Sutherland Highlanders.
He was the son of Edward and Rose Douglas and Brother of John Douglas who married Mary Ann McGarrigle in St Johns Church in 1883.
Do I have the right details because I also found this in the local BMD taken from local newspapers:

18th February 1900 age 20 (Port Glasgow Express 23.2.1900 & Greenock Telegraph

We are doing some family research and would be interested in any help you could give me. We recently discovered that our biological grandfather was called * McGarrigle, brother to *.
We are not known to the family as * only had a brief relationship with our grandmother, resulting in the birth of our mother * (1964 Paisley). We would like to know more, particularly about *'s children and his nieces/nephews.
Please message or write back with any info you have as you may be a cousin!

There was a family of McGarrigles in Glasgow at this time and also a member of the Port Glasgow branch moved to Paisley. I have no idea from the details you aded if it's the same family you would have to contact me via PM but to do this you have to make a few more posts.
