Title: what does 'occupation dealer' mean on marriage cert

on my grandparents marriage cert, my grandfathers occupation is listed as 'dealer' as is his fathers. I am told from family members that the family were travellers [settled] what does 'dealer' mean? any help would be appreciated

I would presume the same as it does now i.e.  someone who bought and sold things.

Lots of mine were dealers, horse dealers, horse sellers, general dealers etc etc.  and on successive censuses they often changed from one to another but all implied selling something.

cathym,ive got the same as devonblue,and  also hawker, general hawker and costermonger,i believe they sold things from carts,pedlars who sold on foot,and marine store dealers who were scrap delers,nel.
