I am having great difficulty with one aspect of my ancestors coming to Canada.
My gr. grandmother Nancy Wroe/Roe and baby Caleb came on the ss Polynesian in 1880. Gr GrandfatherThomas W. was not on the ship's list so I figured he came in 1879 in order to get the land grants that were offered. Now I find out that his parents Caleb and Alice Wroe/Roe also came here. I can't find them anywhere but see that Caleb sr. returned to Lancashire from Ontario in June 1900. No Alice.
Is anyone able to see ship's lists from 1879 to Quebec with destination as Gravenhurst, Ontario, Canada? I'm hoping that The four people will be there. I would think that maybe they took the same ship. maybe. Mykin

Hi Mykin
Welcome to Rootschat! You'll get loads of help on here. I have. Enjoy!
Even so, that's a tough one. Have you tried the passenger lists on
findmypast.com (http://findmypast.com)?
In theory, all passenger lists for leaving Britain (from 1868?), should be on there. Not sure if it's complet yet, though.
If the entry isn't there, it's difficult. I know we've found a few people who were missing from earlier lists, but we have some missing.
Best wishes

Hi, sorry, only from 1890 given on here, but you might get some entries as far as I can tell. Searching is free and you do get dates.
Use the "Emigration" link at the top.

Thanks emms,
yes I have tried findmypast and a couple of others but no luck. This time period seems to be hard to find.
A person in England got me a couple of the answers but just said that they went on to a pay site and got some onfo then went on to collectionscanada.ca That place is in Ottawa and you can view the records. A 12 hour train ride return for me.
So hope that someone has access to something that will help me.
Is there a ship's list on ancestry.ca?

Hi
There are quite a large group of passenger databases on ancestry.com but most of us if we have subscription for a while, just have the uk version. More is being added to that though. Some libraries have an edition with mpre international data on t.
I'll have another look at ancestry though.
Best wishes

Hi Again"!
Just checked.
Sorry. the lisls I was thinking of were for this countries incoming lists.
Ancestry have just added Canadian passenger lists for 1865 - 1935.
I put Wroe, 1879 and got 27 results, including a Thomas, but of course when I tried to look at the details it invited me to pay for the International version. Of course we don't even know if the result was exactly correct.
You might find someone on here in Canada who has it, or visiting a library which has it. Looks as if he may well have gone though.
It might be worth trying an Emigration board on Rootschat?
Sorry, that's the best I can do.
Best wishes

PS I think you can probably search for free, then you'd know exactly what's available

PS The only information given is Victoria, British Colombia as the port, though not necessarily final destination, and he was the only Wroe going there.
Emms
PPS
The above only had 1.5 stars relevance. There were about a dozen Thomas Roe's with three stars relevance, so I think you need a person or establishment with unlimited access to details.
I hope you find him.

CollectionsCanada has scans of the passenger lists 1865-1922 online for free. Not indexed though, so you will probably end up with tired eyes. Also, don't assume that just because they ended up in Quebec that that was their point of disembarkation. They might have gone overland from Halifax, especially in winter.
I start at www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/databases/passenger
My people were post 1900, and the detail improves as you get later.

Thank you emms for your help. It is a 12 hr. train trip to Ottawa, return, to see the documents but I might just have to go there. Wouldn't it be nice to have a good friend in all the cities that you need research done?

Hi andrewalston,I believe that they would have arrived here in the spring as they were early settlers to this northeren area and would need to build a cabin and get a bit of a garden in etc before winter hit.
I can get on to collectionscanada but the print is horrible. for 1879 &80. I can't make out anything with a magniying glass either.
This collection is a breakthrough but I hope they are going to improve the print of the earlier that 1900 records.
thank you for your help, doe

HI Mykin
I'm sure if you stay on Rootschat long enough you'll find a friend in every one of those places. In this case, it doesn't have to be the city where they were, just someone going to a library with the right version of Ancestry.
Best wishes

If you click on the image you get a slightly larger image. Even so a magnifying glass is useful.

Hi My kin,
The Thomas Wroe, that Emms found, is age 51, born Bury Abt 1874. Passage paid for by Firm. Occupation: Director. Destination: Vancouver, B.C.. Date of Arrival 18 May 1925. Port of Departure: Hong Kong. This would not be the Thomas you are looking for, so you can eliminate. There are no other Thomas Wroes on the Canada Passenger List 1865-1935 on Ancestry.
Unable to find any Caleb or Alice Wroe/Roe. No Thomas Roe arriving Abt 1879. One arriving in Quebec 11 Jul 1870-born Abt 1849. Another Arriving 1867 Quebec b. Abt 1847. Another arriving Quebec 1865 b. Abt 1830. All the rest arriving in the 1900s. Would help to have your Thomas birth year.

Sorry for the long delay in answering but wasn't aware there was a message.
My people would have gone to #1 Quebec or Nova Scotia to enter Canada. His full name was Thomas William Wroe. B.March 1859 in Liverpool,Lancashire. They were in the 1881 Canadian census. His wife's name was Nancy Law.
His parents were Caleb James Wroe b. about 1830, wife was Alice Laycock
