Title: JOHN BARCLAY BIRTH
Post by: terrryer1 on Tuesday 14 April 09 01:38 BST (UK)
John Barclay birth is apx. 1943-1944.  I have searched off and on for several years trying to find a birth certificate with no luck.  The information I have is that he was born in Northumberland, England according to the 1901 census.  His marriage certificate (Nov 13, 1865 to Hannah Rochester) list his father as George Barclay.  Both John and George were Mariners.  I haven't been able find him on other censuses.

Any help is most appreciated.

Welcome,

Would you please relate the 1901 census HOUSEHOLD in full? (include refs).
I can't see anyone with those details. i can see one nearly-candidate in Heaton, but he's 58y and not a mariner...

Is this the known family in 1881?

Hi Pauline,
Thank you for such a quick response, I didn't expect one so fast.

Yes this is the John Barclay family I am related to.  I was going to send you a copy of the marriage certificate but could not figure out how to attach it to this e-mail.

Is the 1865 mariage 100% the correct one? (Have you a child's birth cert to confirm)

what names witnessed?
What residence/address was given?
What explicitly were the occupations?

I think they are Berkley in 1871.

Thanks again.  The John and Hannah Berkley could very well be them since their 1st child, Hannah, wasn't born until 1872.

Trish, I've seen this entry, but wasn't sure if it is him and parents.  This is the only one that is close to being Johns parents.

I'll get back tomorrow. It's bedtime here.

I have a CERTIFIED COPY OF AN ENTRY OF MARRIAGE FROM THE GENERAL REGISTER OFFICE, application number: COL877400 that I purchased Jan. 27, 2007.

The witnesses: William Robinson and Jane Waugh in the Parish Church in Tynemouth.  Date of Marriage: Nov. 13 1865. John was 22 years old, rank/profession: Mariner.  Fathers listed:  George Barclay, Mariner and George Rochester, Mariner.
Is all it said in regards to addresses on this marriage certificate was "Residence at the time of Marriage:  This Parish".  Richard Rudd, ?, signed the marriage certificate.

He had 7 children: John, Edith, Charles, Hannah, Elizabeth, George and Mark.

His Entry of Death, states he was a Diver which is also true.  His son John Jr. was present at his death.  His address at his death is given as 7th Avenue, Newcastle.  He died Nov 17, 1903 at the age of 59.
I do not have a birth record for John Barclay, born about 1843-1844.  The date of birth is what I have gotten from census and death record.

Could he be reg. under BERKLEY ???

When looking thru entries seems to be name interchangable esp with Scottish connections.

BERKLEY, John
Newcastle T
June 1844

You could purchase with provisio that father is George :)

If Charles Octavious Barclay ( birth registered in Sept Qtr of 1887 @ Tynemouth Reg District) was child of John/Hannah, it implies that the couple had at least eight, rather than seven children.

So do you now have John the diver/mariner on all the censuses from 1851-1901 ?

Thanks Michael, you're right, I did forget Charles.  I am still trying to find a birth certificate for John Barclay.  Any suggestions?

But you included Charles in the list of 7 children..... anyway.....

If John B.....   was born in North Shields, then his birth would have been registered with/within the Tynemouth Registration District.

There is a birth registration for John BERKELEY.. @ Tynemouth Dec Qtr 1844. I think this is a good candidate for John.

Today the civil registration for this area is covered by North Tyneside Register Office ( Maritime Chambers, 1 Howard St, North Shields, NE30 1LZ, tel 0191-2006164, email ...   registrars@northtyneside.gov.uk  ...   )

Their web site shows a George Barclay marrying Jane Bainbridge within Tynemouth Reg District in 1841.

The on-line Durham " Bishop Transcripts" has Tynemouth Parish Church records up to 1847 ( In the relevant era, and area, Anglicans would have used Tynemouth Parish Church). But searching is by date, not alphabetically by surname).

The PRO HQ ref number for the birth registration is Volume 25  ( London staff copied  BMD info from Northumberland, Cumberland and Westmorland  into volume 25) on page 434.    If you choose to obtain cert from North Tyneside be aware that that "London" reference number will have no relevance to North Tyneside staff.. " We don't go by those London numbers ! " But maybe now as local ROs put their registrations on line, they are tying them in with GRO references.

And take Trish's advice to make stipulations with you cert purchase ( his father = George- a mariner )

While looking through Tynemouth Parish baptisms I saw this

Baptism 15 Aug 1841 Elizabeth ( born 27 July 1841) dtr of George, Master Mariner,  and Hannah Rochester, of Church Way.

This Elizabeth is likely to be Hannah Barclay's sister.

Interesting to note George Rochester was a MM. He is likely to figure in a handy book called " Dictionary of Tyne Sailing Ships, 1820-1920" by Richard Keys. It will list and describe the ships he captained, and maybe owned or part-owned. Unless he juiced up his status, as some mariners did ?

I can normally access this book in the Local Studies section of Newcastle Library- but this temporarily closed until June.

Hi there, Hannah Rochester Barclay (Whitfield) was my great-great grandmother. I'm sitting here with my grandmother who knows the history of Hannah Barclay daughter of Captain John Barclay Master Mariner and Hannah Rochester Barclay.

Elizabeth was her sister and she died around the age of 19-21 years of spinal meningitis. Her sister said she had bright red hair.  Charles Octavious Barclay immigrated to Austrailia, married, had 3 children, and died in World War I. John, Marc, and Hannah all immigrated to Canada.

I have more details concerning this family and some pictures of Charles Octavious, Hannah, John, Marc (and their wives) as well as one of John Barclay Sr. in his diving suit.  Hope this helps.

P.S. Just out of curiousity what is your connection to this family?

Hi there back at you,  Yes I'm related and to you apparently.

This is how I am related to the Barclay family.  Hannah Rochester Barclay was my Great Aunt. Her sister Edith Barclay was my Grandmother.

I did not have the privilege to know any of my relatives. My grandmother, Edith Barclay died when my Mom was 4 years old in Edinburgh, Scotland and my Grandfather, George Bruce Wood immigrated to Victoria, BC, then to Seattle, Washington.

Who is your grandmother and what is your name and family members?  I got into genealogy because I never new any of my relatives.

I can send some pictures of Mom and family if you wish.
Also, I can be reached at:  terryer@centurytel.net.  I live in Kettle Falls, Washington, near the Canadian border.

I will be anxiously awaiting to hear from you.  I want to know my relatives.
